The 3x have bridge+middle in series, which is the same as bridge-neck in series on the 2x.

I’m referring to the 2x configuration with Bridge + Neck (sort of like a “jazz bass”, or a 3x without the middle pickup, diagram example below).

The Bridge + Neck (Series) on that 2x configuration would be different than the Bridge + Middle (Series) “MM style” setting from 3x.

I think it’s wise to get the 3rd pickup. It’s a really tough add on after the fact and if anything changes in your interests or fear you may find yourself exploring different sounds. Also, the resale will be easier IMO.

I switch between the N/B and N/M all the time. I do have custom six way selectors that give me exactly what I want for options.

How did you go about getting that custom selector?

I'd like one with:
  • Neck solo
  • Middle solo
  • Neck + Middle
  • Neck + Bridge
  • Middle + Bridge
  • Neck + Middle + Bridge

I get Mo Minas to make them for me. I’m pretty certain he is the supplier of them to fretnation unless Jason has sorted out another means.

Mo works/worked(?) with Nordstrand
Awesome Guy to deal with!
He makes some beautiful basses to boot


This is my preferred set up at this time

1. (fully clockwise) Neck Solo
2. Middle solo
3. M/N parallel
4. Jazz parallel
5. Jazz series
6. (fully counter clockwise)
B/M series

While we are on the subject of pickup options, I'm thinking about getting a 6 way switch for my SJ x3. (I'd have Mo do it.) My main reason is to have a middle solo. I'm also thinking about buying a Dingwall P-tone pickup. I seem to recall Sheldon stating that the best position for that would be the middle position on a x3. Does anyone have that? Seems like most put it in the neck position. I'm hesitant to do that because I primarily use the bridge-neck combo and I love my FDV pickups in that position.

I have that on a Z3. 3 x p-tone.
Unfortunately I can't select middle solo. I have the vanilla switch.

Also, Dingwall tech told me not to mix the p-tone with the FDVs since the p-tone could demagnetize (aka kill) the FDVs.

My DROC custom experience led me to wanting a 6 way switch with middle position on my Z3 - I honestly think you might like the FDV in that position and would recommend getting the switch installed regardless. Worst case you'll need a little bit of bass/low mid boost and you'll be in business.

Do you have FDVs in your Z3? How would you compare the neck solo to the middle solo? Which comes closer to a P bass vibe?

SFII's, but I also have an ABZ w/ SFII in the bridge/middle & a P-tone neck. Someday I plan to swap in the P-Tone to the Z3 middle position just to give it a shot. Don't worry, it's not lost on me that I have way more bass than ability these days....

My general feeling with the neck positions are that they are more mellow than I'd want from a P sound. That said, I'm chasing more aggressive rock P-bass tones in those situations. The middle is more articulate and less beefy in the bottom than the neck, thus why I prefer it most times.

If I compare the neck P-tone vs a neck SFII the P-tone is definitely more aggressive, especially in the high mids. It's all subjective in the end...

Mo is no longer active on TB but he does monitor threads of interest and he saw our convo and reached out.

He asked me to pass this info on to this fine crowd.

“ I do still work with Nordstrand and yes I supply the custom rotary switches to Fretnation (and also Bass Direct in UK. We go way back Mark and I).

I also saw it comes up here and there questions about the DRoc and the switch fitting.

The best thing is to order it directly from me because it has to be modified to fit the the DRoc's shallow cavity and I can still make pretty much all the possible combos.”

In addition he did clarify that he can make switches with a range of 3-6 setting options.

He did state there is an 8 way but it is way too tall to fit in the cavity space on the Dingwall’s so currently 6 is the max
