Oh yes, a box. Refrigerator box? Heaven.
I also had a Mattel chopper-trike thing- I VIVIDLY recall my folks raising a stink over it, as I was clearly *too big* for it(10-12?). LOVED that thing, rode the SH- out of it. The gearbox(it had a pair of cranks like a bike but was not serviceable)wore out, Im sure my parents rejoiced

G.I. Joe, and I don't mean the cheesy superhero/ninja 6" plastic "Kung Fu grip" pieces o' crap, I mean the 12" guys with the authentic cloth military uniforms, from the US and other countries. I had the Jeep with the recoilless rifle and searchlight on a trailer, the Mercury space capsule with the mylar spacesuit, a helicopter, jet, and armored car from company called Irwin, the footlocker and a whole bunch of different uniforms and accessory sets, including a deep-sea divers suit with a rubberized cloth suit, lead weighted belt and boots, bras colored helmet and a set of hoses with a mouthpiece you could blow into when you had him in water to make the helmet emit air bubbles. Very cool stuff.

Man, GI Joe was more popular than I knew. I got one for Christmas, probably around 1970. I remember he came with a plastic shark and the shark was cool but Joe was toast in a few days. I think his arms and legs fell off, lol.

I always loved cars! All kinds of cars... hotwheels were great, Sizzlers were even better, matchbox were ok and tootsie toys were just sort of ok. Much as I loved cars I hated pictures so mom had to bribe me by allowing me to hold a car if she wanted to snap a shot, haha. I still remember the one in this pic too. I ran it up and down the sidewalk at the TV repair shop where my dad worked until the wheels fell off. Dad couldn't fix it, shoot!

I loved my legos too but I mostly built cars with them, hahah

That smash-up derby SSP set was great! Thanks for posting it, I had forgot about that one.

Man reading through this thread and seeing all of the toys really brings back lots of powerful memories. The main thing I realize now is that even though we were decidedly lower middle class (READ: Poor but living in the city), I still got lots of cool stuff and frankly had a very good childhood. Think I need to write mom and dad a letter while I still can thanking them for all they did for me, especially as a kid!:crying:

GI goe with fuzzy hair and kung fu grip, 6 million dollar man with bionic eye and visible bionic arm, stretch armstrong, silly putty, big wheel, evel knievel doll with motor cycle and ramp, SSP cars smash-up derby, slip and slide, army men with parachutes, verti-bird.

A letter through the door, especially an unexpected one and one with such a great theme would be a delight for your parents...
you brought a tear to my eye as well with that one...

Yes! Big box = instant fort! And you're right...you can imagine it to be anything you want.

I grew up in the 50's and 60's and had all the usual toys: cars, cap guns, "army men", etc, but I think my favorite and most versitile was: a stick. With some imagination it could be anything I wanted it to be, gun, knife, car, walkie-talkie, horse, or anything else. Pair it with giorob815's box and it was nirvana.

I was a car nut too, so almost all of my toys were car related. The picture is great, my mom had to do the same thing to get pictures of me. lol

That really is a great photo. The 68 Olds Cutlass that you are sitting on got my attention, but the 1960 Dodge in the background really caught my eye.
