Actually, since Mrs. Dog lived in Germany in, ... <ahem>, ... "another life", we celebrate
Niklolaustag, or Saint Nickalaus Day. And, although it is observed on December 6th in Germany, and their preparation is done on the evening of December 5th, we have Americanized it in the Dog-household to December 7th, with preparation on the evening of December 6th. Saint Nickalaus Day begins with a remembrance and prayers for Pearl Harbor Day before small gifts for being good, or switches as a warning for the naughty, are presented.
The first Saint Nickalaus Day in the Dog-household, with our new blended family including 5 young children, Mrs. Dog added a few small switches to
my very small good gift
! I was the only one to get any switches, to the kids' delight. I played along and admitted that maybe I had been a little hard on the kids' discipline, to which they agreed. I was always "bad cop" to Mrs. Dog's "good cop." Later, with 5
teenagers in the house, a single small switch with a small good gift would remind someone, or two, of a (usually academic) improvement need. It is now a fond memory of our grown kids that they mostly find too inconvenient to carry on with their kids. Even though none of them have more than just 2 kids to raise!
