Genz Benz Streamliner; Part 4

Brief A/B with an LMIII through a Berg AE410... pretty much what you would expect. Streamliner was deeper, smoother through the mids, and killed the LM in volume. The LM could go from inherently "textured" in the mids to a warm sound via the VLE, but it didn't have the depth of tone that the SL has. LMIII has "more EQ", but frankly I found (and continue to find) the Streamliner's EQ network to be incredibly well thought out and extremely usable.

I have a Eden 410XLT. Is that in the same neighborhood as a AE410? Curious how that is going to sound with my SL 900. Any predictions?

That is a classic cab. Of course, it doesn't sound the same as the AE410, BUT, it is (using my 'quickly becoming tired phrase') in the same tone universe:D I mean that the low end of the XLT is tight, there is a bit of a bump in the low mids and upper mids. Tight and bright is a good combination with the Streamliner IMO if you want a fat but still punchy and articulate tone. My feeling is, it will sound great.

If you kind of dig the tone, you might want to try the AE410 if you can, since you would lose about 35 pounds and about 1/4 of the size, and gain a more even voicing without losing much of anything!

So, walking out the door to ship my 9.0 off, and my Streamliner was being set on my porch by UPS!!!
:hyper:
When I get home, there will be some fun to be had!

I'm not really liking the Eden at the moment. In the practice space, it sounds a little "barky". That mid bump, I don't like.

It is that! Especially solo in a small space. The Streamliner is very big and smooth sounding, so you might dig it with that matchup. The AE410 is also quite mid aggressive, but MUCH more even than the old XLT.

Any GB Shuttlemax users that have already transitioned to a Streamliner? I absolutely love my Shuttlemax 6.0 and really don't have expectations regarding my Streamliner 900 on order. I am really interested to find out which I will like more.

Maybe it's just me, but the Streamliner just seems louder/beefier with more girth than my Shuttle 9.0. I know they are rated the same, but my very unscientific ears hear a lot more volume coming out of the Streamliner. I change my mind a bit on equipment from time to time, but I really dig this amp.

KsPiNeSh, have you had your SL900/Uber 410 combo out on a gig yet? I saw your comparison thread but coming from a Mesa M9 to the SL900, I was wondering if it had the kind of definition with slam that you seem to favor?

I have four gigs and one rehearsal this week, so my SL900 is gonna get a bit of a workout.
So far it's just smooth warmth that is WAY nice.

And with just a little adjustment EQ wise, I can get it to sound more like 9.0 than I thought.
Granted it doesn't have that "quickness" and tightness that my 9.0 has, but tone wise, I can get "in the same tone universe" {TM KJung Enterprises 2011}. ;)

:D Cool! Have fun. I look forward to hearing you with it over the next couple weeks.

Lack of quickness...
I'm trying to get my head around exactly what that means.

So if we are playing some fast Blink-182 punk with a pick the notes feel like they come out late?

Three things IMO.... a lack of an upper mid bump (that IMO the ear hears as a quick, forward attack), a deep voiced bass response (i.e., a high ratio of deep bass to upper bass), which takes some of the 'bap bap' attack off the note, and finally, a really nice dose of tube compression that naturally occurs when you dial up the tube gain.

Combine all of those, and it gives you just a bit of a more relaxed feel than some of the more brightly and tightly inherently voiced amps like the Markbass F1/F500 and the Shuttle 9.

You can turn down the pre gain, cut the bass a bit, and dial up the upper mids a touch and, as Mike said, get a bit closer to the more 'modern' (i.e., 'quick') response. Quick is one of those nebulous terms that means different things to different people, but I view it as that kind of tight, mid present, immediate 'bap' at the initial note attack.

No, as Ken said it's more of a nebulas term and not an actual "measure" of the notes coming out of your amp.

Plus, pretty much every time I ever see one of those guys in BP or something, they're all playing through SVT's, so I think you'll be OK.

Like Ken said, not late at all.

Think of it like this. Let's say you have two basketballs. Attached to one is a steel chain. Attached to the other is heavy duty bungie chord. You remove the slack from both. When you give the chain a snag, it immediately yanks the basketball toward you hard with a sudden change in momentum. That's a solid state head typically, quick and punchy with immediate impact up front, but not necessarily as much feel after that first snap.

On the other hand, when you yank the bungee chord, the ball does start moving initially, but the bungee absorbs alot of that energy so it's not a sudden shock, but if you yank that bungee back hard enough, the energy absorbed by the bungee goes back into the basketball after a moment so that it gains more acceleration and increases speed, eventually snapping the ball forward with great velocity. This is a tube head. That increased energy on the back end is what most people describe as "heft" or "weight".

In the analogy, both examples move the ball instantly, but both feel very differently from the other from both the perspectives of the person doing the yanking, and to the ball getting yanked. The end result is that ball is moved. Which do you prefer?

That's my feeble attempt to explain it, and as with all analogies it falls apart if you try to work it out to much. For example, a solid state head can still push a note hard beyond initial punch, so "heft" isn't limited to tube heads by any means. Also, the "slowness to full acceleration" from the bungee chord happens in a matter of microseconds with tube heads. A tube rig can feel VERY punchy and snappy when you're standing in front of the right rig. So these are relative terms that really have their meaning only when used in comparisons.

Still waiting on my call from Mike at YOMS today. He told me Friday he was shipping them today. Wondering if he waits till days end to ship. gonna have to call yet again I feel.

In that case give us an update. Mine is supposed to ship today as well. I'm sure he's sick of me by now so I'm not going to pester the man any more. :)
