I have noticed that with some settings, the low notes on the B string sound different from the other strings (the sound becomes farty/more overdriven than on the other strings).

This happens when I am using the Jive with no switches engaged. It does not happen when I engage the first switch.

I am using mild/moderate saturation.

Anybody has similar experience?

yes and no… I actually specifically like it for the sound on my B string, but it's because it doesn't fart like overdrives on my B; it does that broad cough kind of sound, without buzziness. The lowest lows are attentuated a bit, but I don't find that my sound is thin at all.


I also liked it at 18v, as the sweep of sweet spot gain is wider. I do not like the highest gain settings where it gets buzzy at all, so if you're past like 2 o'clock or even 1, I'd back off first

There was some talk about shoddy build quality of JPTR FX pedals, so I opened up my Jive just to take a peek.

Looks like standard fare SMD to me, should be more reliable and less noisy than their older stuff (my gain knob didn't even crackle when I tested it). As a fan of Cowboy Bebop, I appreciate the little message.

JPTR FX skirts the line for me. Bought a double Jive pedal based on a listing that they did a limited run of pedals and believing they were already made. That wasn't the case, waited several weeks and definitely believe they're making more than that "limited" run. Regret doing business with them and sold the pedal.

So you bought it not for its sound but for the fact that it was a limited run??

This is likely the wrong thread to say the sound wasn't for me. Really liked some of the online videos, but not when on my board.

Waiting months for something I thought was already produced was what cheesed me off.

Played Jive live again (last Saturday). I compared 9V vs 18V at home before the gig, and it sounded a bit bigger and wider at 18V, the dirt character was a bit different as well. The drive felt a bit cleaner I guess (without clipping diodes). I kept it at 9V for the gig.

It was great as a dirty boost without any diodes. I hit the first diode switch for one song - the first diode is almost a subtle change when used in a loud live environment (it's more obvious when I used it at home though my headphones). It adds a bit more dirt and compresses your signal more when you really dig in, but it looses a bit of clarity that no diodes option brings. Great tone as well, but I mostly used it with no clipping diodes because of the great headroom and clarity. Perfect for a slightly dirty boost, it worked really well in the mix. But having two options with just a flip of the switch is excellent (no volume/gain knob change needed).

Next gig I'll finally give it a try at 18V.

I really like the Double Jive pedal. It's been awhile since I've had so much fun with a dirt pedal. It's just a different beast altogether. The single Jive is cool enough, but stacking them is when the magic happens.

These three little toggle switches on each one. I'm not 100% sure what they do - "three clipping diode toggles that allow you to experiment with different levels of asymmetry and symmetry" - they are pretty cool, especially when stacked. I'm gathering that each one somehow changes how the diode(s) clip(s), and you can set them for one position on Jive 1 and the other position on Jive 2.

This leads to some really cool things - in some settings, some of the diodes clip in even harmonic order and some in odd, so you get your sound clipping in both even and odd harmonics at once. It can be dissonant, or quite beautiful. You can lower the volume of one and set the odds to be very faint, which gives this kind of distorted chorus effect, or you can set it higher for a harsher effect.

Not to mention that you can run them in parallel or serial, etc. All in all, it's a pretty cool pedal.

by no means would anyone ever describe it as "smooth" or "tube like" - this ain't the pedal if that's what you are looking for. The distortion is crunchy - it's not fuzz, it's got a nice pronounced clipping, just like an over driven console should.

Sounds interesting I have looked into getting a double jive. In terms of pedal size is it like 2 jives together would you say??

I use my Jive with the diode toggles off and drive at noon to get some warmth and make my sound 'wider' if you know what I mean?? Makes it sound bigger. Does using 2 jives like this make it sound even bigger?? I know recording can sound great layering tape saturation effect in the signal path.

I think it's a bit smaller than two Jives together - it's a little under 5 inches, if that helps.

And yes - using the two stacked makes it sound even bigger than the single one, but it's pretty easy to drive into light OD, which makes it even sound better. Then you can get into the hairy stuff with all of the diodes ...

I really wanted to get this pedal, but reading about the wait times turned me off. The circuit is not hard at all, so I did a point to point. Not the best, but I did what I could. I really like this pedal. Super simple build.

Would you be willing to do a variation on this? I love the three diodes and the sym/asym switches, I was thinking of adding a bias control for each diode as well as an in/out toggle for each diode? Would something like that be doable?

I wish I could make something for you, but I had to follow the schematic to build it and it took days of staring at it to plan out where to put things. I have no idea how to add other component. If you want to build something, here's the link I followed.

rather than wait for all of the JPTR shipping issues i just built my own Jive in an acid etched 1590B:

IMO, the early ones did have some build issues,, but the newer SMD built one shouldn't.

Would love to have a go at making a double jive. The way I use it too I wouldn't need any of the 3 switches as I never use them. Could it be possible to make a Jive without them 3 switches?
