as for being "worth" 4K? that is up to you....I would not buy a used Lakland for that much but that is just me.....

I'm soon to be one of you again. Unfortunately I've had to sell some basses off but thankfully that puts me closer to saving for a Lakland
I had a 99 Special Edition Emerald one that I absolutely L O V E D.

Here's my question: Who owns a MacFarland Lakkie? Is it worth tracking one down? How is the neck any different from other Lakkie necks?

There's one on eBay right now for 4K. Personally I think that's quite steep, but if the neck is worth it, who knows?

What little I have been playing them, I like like em just fine.
The super thin neck profile on the 44-07 and Scheff are flippin fantastic!!
Those two have the best neck profile of any basses I have EVER played.
Super thin, smooth and fast ass &^%#@!!!

I Still think I am a fan of active basses much more so than passive.
Passive basses just lack the in your face KAPOWIE of active.

I actually had a brief moment of thought about letting go of the US one of firemist passive single coil chi Decade AND the US one of sonic blue DJ with passive bucker chi's and BEM board and using the $4,000 to order this SWEEEEEET active 44-94 in drop dead custom Buckeye Burl top! I Love that thing, WOW!

I also love the looks of my Decade and DJ.
And the fact they both are one of basses makes it really hard to make this move. So even though I am gassin for that Buckeye bass, most likely will sit tight and take a tums and chillax LOL

I hear ya on the passive active thing, that's why I put a P-retro in my P-bass.

I would contact BC and talk to Beaver or Grasshopper to see if that bass is still available if your GAS'n for it. Sometimes what's pictured on the site is not available, they don't tend to update regularly. Good guys to deal with and have bought a few basses from BC. Make sure you let Beaver know you're a TB member, he usually gives a small discount for being a member.

Brain....we will have to talk about the P retro....I was thinking about one myself....like data before I spend the coin!

Yes and yes...Glad I'm not the only one that has had this issue. Unfortunately, mine is out of warranty. Now if I can just get them to call me back...

I just spoke with Brian, he said that he would make sure that one of the techs would call me today. The crappy thing is that I contacted the previous owner and he said that he upgraded it from the Barts to the LH3 8 or 9 months ago. Because I'm not the original purchaser, warranty won't cover it. I'd rather have the Barts...

Brian will take care of you for sure....sorry it is not covered....bummer.....if you can get a hold of a set of Barts (there MAY be a few hanging around here) maybe they can reinstall them since you gotta send it back anyways! just a thought...

Well shucks, Dan, I don't know that I'm all that wise. Doug can probably tell you about many times I have talked out selling/trading.buying scenarios with him, yet never gone through with. I'm either too lazy or too busy with other stuff, but inaction has often been my friend, lol.

That's cool, whatever works for you. I can get growly digging into my P bass with steel strings. When I want/need to get really aggressive, out comes the pick.

Me too.... picks (no offense to anyone) make me feel like one of those whimpy guitarists. Nevertheless, I occasionally use one but can't really play well w/ it. Right hand muting is a problem.

I cannot seem to get the pick thing working....mostly lose track of where I am....I use my fingers in order to figure out which sting I am on....no feeling with a pick so i get lost....

So then in other words, you go with the Jimi Hendrix teeth plucking style when the tune merits?

I've had the pleasure of owning some nice Laklands.

Just scored a 2004 Skyline Hollowbody/Sunburst/ Barts.

First time I've every played one, amazed at the tones that come out of this bass.

Workmanship is great, plays like butter, a keeper.

Posting a question on behalf of a fellow NJ/PA bassist. This question relates to a JO that he just picked up (I included his question and pics, which he also posted on Lakland's FB page):

"I just picked up this USA JO Sig bass. The serial # is 0XX. There is no "JO" prefix. The Pot Dates are 10th week of 1997. There is a "Joe Osborn" logo on the headstock. I was told production started in 1998. Evey date on this instrument shows early 97 and Hugh had his hands on this bass. Is this a pre-production bass?? Any Info is very much appreciated!"

WOW!!!! definitely sounds like a prototype!!! that is one cool bass!

I think that any serials that have "xx" in them are prototypes, but just where this one fits into the JO timeline would be very cool to find out.

yup.....I think so.....HOWEVER my 55-07 (proto) an JO5CS (firts one made) both have serial numbers...

I've got this going on intermittently with my fretted 55-02... rarely happens on a gig or rehearsal... almost always happens when I'm in front of my laptop practicing... so I've put up with it or adapted. But if you've got a quick and dirty fix I'm all ears!

Buzzing in front of the laptop or TV might be helped by shielding the cavity...

Spent some time with this baby today.

First time I plugged it into the new Mesa M-Pulse 600 head.
These Dark Stars and that Mesa head are truly AMAY-ZA-ZA-ZING!!!
A marriage made in heaven for sure.
I cannot wait to replace these Gk Cabs with the new Mesa Cabs and blow the roof off my house.
This U.S. HB has quickly become one of my most cherished basses!
I was playing with the gain on the M-Pulse 600 and had this thing producing some fantastic feedback.
GOOD Feedback and sustain for days!
Now I want more Darkstar loaded basses!!!

As of today I officially own a Lakland finally! Got this in a trade, 55-60/Joe Osborn Skyline. I haven't had much time to play it, but I did play for a while tonight and fell in love. Then I gave it a quick set up to get it closer to my specs (will wait until I get some new strings to do a full setup, though it's pretty close) and love it even more. It has an audere preamp installed currently, and it sounds fantastic. I may swap the stock electronics back in someday. I originally wanted a passive jazz bass, but first impressions are this bass sounds so good with the audere that I don't want to mess with it. Anyway, here's a quick pic I took before my phone died. I'll hopefully get some better pictures up soon.

I've been doing a little work on my basses this week--I'll snap some pics soon--anyway, while I was doing the setups one of my friends stopped by with his JO/44-60. It's actually the first one I owned. I sold it to him 5 1/2 years ago when I got my sunburst JO (which was later ruined in the flood). Since then it's been his main bass--tons of gigs/touring/recording--a real relic Lakland. Sorry the pics are blurry....

well...I can say that you CAN order a Lakland without playing it and should have NO worries!!!

as for which to buy...what do you want? if you like a 70s style J bass the DJ is the way to go....

a 4-94 and 44-02 have the same electronics....color, wood choice (weight at times) and necks (quartersawn vs. flat sawn) are the real diffrences.

If you like active and variety...get a 4-94/44-02 they can do a GREAT J sound as well as many other tones...

I personally think a 4-94/44-02 is a great intro lakie becuase you get so much out of it.....

PS - you can also look used here on TB and a on Link Removed for a used 4-94 or 44-02....might save you a few pesos!!!

I am evily tempted to buy a lakland, trouble is, here in Mexico the exclusive dealer doesn't have any in stock to "test it". Do you think I should buy one without testing it first? I am thinking on a 44-94, 44-02 or a Darryl Jones the new model. Also if you could help me with your knowledge on deciding between models would help a lot. I actually own an Ibanez SR700 with Bartolini MK1 PUs. Thanks!

I have an Audere classic 4 band in my DS Decade & it RULES!
Much more flexibility in the tone shaping dept & it's clean so the natural awesomeness shines thru.
It definitely moves the furniture 'round & I've noticed that side of the house is begging to list...

Done doing setups. Here's a couple pics of the basses I've been using the most. The gold 44-64 has been my main bass since I got it about 4 years ago, and I've had that 55-94 for a long time. The red 44-64 is a more recent one and has heavy flats on it.

Hi all I have a simple question about a U.S. Bob Glaub I am about to pull the trigger on from a dealer. Shoreline Gold , Black Guard , Beautiful birds eye maple fret board . Are their maple fret board's finished as I do like them that way ? I have heard of fret sprout issues but would like to hear from first hand experience from the experts here . I believe I will go with a Glaub with a rosewood board if the maple is unfinished . I am also planning a U.S. Joe Osborn Jazz but with a rosewood board . Thanks in advance on the help and info .

I've got 2 BEM fretboarded Laklands from pre-2000, so over 12 yrs old each. They're NOT poly or lacquer finished, but instead have an oil applied, Orange oil is recommended on the Lakland website. The back of the neck is oiled and has a thin layer of wax applied. I've noticed that the necks are a little more humidity and temperature sensitive, but it's worth an occasional truss tweak at gigs etc to have a neck that feels like your favorite pair of fuzzy sleeping pants . I've never had any fret sprout at all, in any of my 20+ Lakies.

Your musical styles can EASILY be handled by a Lakland 44-##. BUT, if you like a super skinny Ibanez nutwidth.... and if I remember correctly, they're BELOW 1.5" you should NOT get a 44-94/02. They're made w/ 1.65" nutwidth, in between a typical F3nder jazz (1.5) and a P (1.75). I'd get a Lakland DJ, 44-60, or 44-AJ instead.

I still think q 44-XX would be good....the extra width should be an easy trade off for the variability in sounds etc....

Heh. They're Laklands. The question of joining is only WHEN not IF. At least, that was my discovery. And my decision was finalized after only a single afternoon noodling around in the Bass Central showroom playing everything they'd allow me to touch. At the end of the day, this is one of the basses I walked out the door with.

Dang... Took my 55-60 to rehearsal yesterday. I never use it at my 90's coverband (always take the Celinder or the Blade) but yesterday I noticed that the Lakland works éverywhere. There are Elixirs on the bass now and they work great... Whát a bass. It's amazing.
