Lakland Owners Group #55!

Not open for further replies.
Finally got my hands on a DJ .... It joins my DD. MIK, 2006, seller said it had been Plek'd at Lakland, came with an Audere Z3 preamplifier with 3 band EQ.
Great playing and feeling bass, perfect balance. I generally prefer passive basses, but this is the best preamplifier I have experience with and it is opening my eyes and ears.

That is the exact DJ I have looking for! Congrats!

Thanks ..... I have been looking for months, when they come up for sale they usually don't last too long.

wow....I have been gone too long!!!

"congrats" Dan...I think....

wassup with Markus? Jolly Green must be keeping him very busy!

do I even review the last few pages of 54? don't have that much time right now....

here goes....

PS - Greg, who says we conservatives are not all inclusive? I take offense (:D) at that insinuation...

Here we go again--wow, 6 weeks or so! The leaders are the same, although the distribution is a bit wider. I didn't cut off the count at 10 posts this time; using Chrome instead of Explorer this time allowed me to be more "inclusive." Sorry if that offends any conservatives.:p:hiding:

I'm in. And with pics.....

BassMimiWithRebel2.jpg

cute kid....and sexy bass!!!

Man I thought I was in on this group. I LOVE my Laklands. The JO5 w/J Retro is my main go to these days. The Roscoe is the army's, but I dont really like it anyway lol.

102_0194.jpg

nice collection! our tax dollars go to buy Roscoes??? wonder if it was a "no bid situation"....maybe we need to send emails to all of our congressmen (and women) to tell them to buy Laklands....

wonder if they paid 2-3X list price???? :eyebrow:

Hmmm...planning a mega(re)post with lots of pics (and chicks) and videos. Is that ok? ;)

I won't protest......:hyper:

ooooooops, seems I blaaabed a bit more than I planned in this one. I tried holding back. really. I did. umm kinda? Sorta? I think?
:hiding:

REALLY???? REALLY???? doubt it.....

I decided to take a look at the nut, neck, bridge and strings a bit more closely, so I took out a set of digital calipers and measured the distance from the outside of the E and G strings to the edge of the fretboard from nut to heel.

I found that the distance from the E to the edge was consistently 12/64" and the G to the edge was 8/64" all the way down.

In the process of doing this as I got to the heel on the G side I happened to notice that the saddle for the G string was slightly misaligned in that it was pointing out to a minor degree. I loosened the string and then pushed it back flush against the D saddle, tuned back up to pitch and remeasured.

The result is that the G string is now 10/64" from nut to heel. I ran through the progressions that previously would result in the G slipping off the board and found that the string was now staying on the fretboard. Hopefully this has fixed the issue. :hyper:

I will still be putting the Cobalts on later this week and will report back on those separately. Thanks for everyone's suggestions and helpful hints, very much appreciated.

glad your issue was fixed.....looked at all of my basses....spacing seems good on all (even the 2 Skylines)...

doggone saddles!

wow....I have been gone too long!!!

"congrats" Dan...I think....

yea RIGHT? "I think"... is right.
I have been working on the Computer so much. It is easy to leave TB open and check in.
Have several booked work trips ahead that require a ton of promoting and pimping to assure max $$$ ....
Much of my time is parked on my butt on the Computer....ughhhh:hmm:

That G looks practically suicidal  DON'T JUMP LITTLE BUDDY!

he he he.....LOL!

Here is a sneak peak of my work in progress 2010 44-60. I am eagerly awaiting for the delivery of 2 pick-guards I ordered from Jeannie's, a clear and black pearl. I am 90% certain this bass will sport the clear guard. Once the guards are in, she's getting shipped to Carl P. for a few mods. I'll post a complete list of what I did and what Carl did when I get her back....till then here is a peek snap shot Sorry for the crappy iPhone pic.

IMG_0621.gif

nice...I cannot wait to see the results (maybe leter in this thread????)...if so the LOG time machine is still in working order (even after being stored for a few weeks!)

well, I now own this bad chadwick:
DSC_5295.gif

2011 Inca Silver 44-64 custom. Only had it a couple of days and I haven't even had a chance to play it amplified, but me likey

Picture is from the seller, I'll be adding my own eventually:D

nice...welcome!!!! :cool::bassist:

Block party! :hyper:

DSC_0311.gif

Matt...you KNOW how much I love dem blocks!!!! those are hot hot hot...

WOW...the black DS bass with the "wood" inlays... I need a shower!!

Hoping to join the "lakland club" again today... finalizing a purchase of a 44-02 this morning! I'll post pics if I get the process worked out. If any of you have any advise on this thread, let me know!

TalkBass Forums: The Bass Guitar and Double Bass Online Community

good luck and reel it in!!!

Ok, tech question for the Lakland familia...

How difficult would it be to add a 5 position knob and re-route the preamp so the knob can act as a mid selector switch rather than opening up the back of my 55-94?

hmmm....not sure...I would email [email protected] to get his advice first....I would think you would have to get into the back...

Incredible, broheim! Hmmm, two with BEM blocks, two with ebony, two with pearl. Now you need two with abalone!:smug:

did not notice that....pretty OCD of him huh????

Whoo. Nice collection of blocks. I think I have to agree that the BEM are the tops.

J2 - would those be "custom" blockaged necks???:hiding:

Thanks y'alls! I'm lookin for ways to keep the fretless in the clan... :hmm:

hope you can !!!!!!!!

And here is the new one! Not a Glaub this time. Tomorrow or Sat. I am going to ship the neck off to Pat to spray the headstock natural. All those that know me know that I am not a painted headstock fan. I got a good enough deal (really good) that I can get the refinish done and still be under typical used value.

Sorry for the sub-par iphone photo.

c7647f07.jpg

nice...congrats!!! "sprayed natural"? you mean have him remove the paint? wouldn't that be a better solution?

So today my last USA Lakland was sent off :crying:
However, I'm happy that boisebassco is getting it.
Oh well, at least I have my 55-02 to keep me company for now :)

In the future, when finances allow, I'll be picking up a 44-07 Single Coil Chi's. A thought I've been toying with is asking Lakland if they'd be willing to move the neck pickup up a bit to cop more of a "chewy" P-Darkstar sort of tone...which I absolutely love. What do you guys think? Good idea? Not so good? Would it mess with the "harmonic nodes" (most likely misusing the term, I know!)?

Also, here's a shot of my only remaining Lakkie...for now!!!

sorry man.....I think they would move the pickup for yah....almost POSITIVE....

That is all kinds of awesome. Block and Roll baby!

he he "Block and Roll"....:smug:

DSC_0311.gif

It sounds fantastic! I stayed away because I never really gave jazz necks enough time to get used to. I assumed I hated them. After I spent time with a jazz width neck I grew to really like it so I figured I would give this a try.

I was a little shocked that it has a glossy neck. Are they all like that? Not the typical Skyline satin?

most of the skylines have "shinier" necks....US necks are the satin finish....

I've kept this beast secret for a long time, I don't think anyone can crucify me for saving a US Lakland body, pickguards, and pickups from collecting dust..... right?? :hiding:

IMG_7075-1.jpg

that is a hot bass JJ!!! love it...ALOT! congrats on a VERY nicely done 'project abss"...the BEM neck is awesome.....

Ok need the wisdom of you old school Lakland experts.

I am considering picking up a Lakland skyline Dudepit LE II bass with the factory loaded single Dark Star.

It is supposed to have a "matching Headstock".

BUT, I found out from someone that theirs has a Plastic on the headstock matching the bodies paint color.
And that theirs is not a painted headstock at all????????
They said the plastic on theirs has thin fine cracks in the plastic????
Not clear if it is a thin sheet of plastic cut to fit the headstock?
Or if it is a plastic thin laminate?
or just what it really is.

Have asked around a wee bit, But wanted to try to get the actual factual 411 from you guys who most likely know all about this limited edition bass.

Please let me know ...having bass held...thanks :D

hmmm.....

1st off....I KNEW it would not be a long time before you dove again!

2nd...I think this guy does not know his Laklands....As far as I know, they are painted.....you can always talk to your friend Gary to verify!!!

3rd...I think you will love the sound

The only one of my former Lakies I regret selling is my DPLEII. Don't know about the headstock. Looked like paint to me. Could be that the poly finish on the headstock is just cracking. But I would buy that bass. Now.

I agree...

I've posted my bass here before, but yesterday I defiled it with some neon yellow DR's.

Already plays and sounds better than with the d'd's that were in it when I bought it.

Was a little nervous when I opened up the strings and saw how bright they were, but I dont think the look is too too outrageous.

like it....!!!! love the lefty lakie as well...rare for sure!

This is quoting what was in the stores email reply to me when I wrote asking about that bass.
---------------------------------------------------------
" The "matching head stock" is not paint, its an
overlay. We just had ours glued back on.there is a teeny split
in the plastic. Not bad at all but I have to point it out. It seems to be happening on a lot of Skylines. "
-----------------------------------------------------------
what the heck does he mean " a lot of skylines"???
this is weird man...hahaha!!

hmmm...not sure what he is saying....

PS - Greg, who says we conservatives are not all inclusive? I take offense (:D) at that insinuation...
Haha, just taking a jab like you sometimes do.;) Some are, yes, others are not. I'm very disappointed at the popularity of one candidate who is definitely "not". But I'd better stop there...

well I have not taken the dive yet.
But am leaning in that direction.
My Stealth sold yesterday. Waiting for buyers $$ to upload in his paypal acct.
Then I can decide if I want that DPLEII or not?
We shall see.
Kinda been getting more passive basses around here than normal :eyebrow:

:);)

BTW: I've got a nice and minty 55-01 Deluxe Ltd.11 Trans Blue/Maple on the Way. Can't await to get it here.

nice pics Bootsy ( he he!)...congrats on the incoming blue monster!!!

These are great basses!
Liked them so much I owned the same one twice, then had a US BG built based on this config.
I had no idea it was not paint, if anything, the headstock gave me the impression of a luxuriously thick coat of paint - looked sharp, no idea it was a laminate, nor would that have been an issue for me at all. doesn't feel like a "cost cutting short cut ".
If the lam is back in place and glued tight, whats the issue?

This batch of basses was special!

I have played a few and would agree....

my pat wilkins

?????:eyebrow:????

do you guys have a special relationship? keeping him for yourself? what about the rest of us Lakie-aholics???

Yup. Well, it is their more affordable line, so there are bound to be some differences. I think the more pressing question is which is better for the tone of the bass...laminate or paint? :hiding:

:D Just being silly.

yup...silly you!:smug:

Pat is going to get my Decade neck this week to strip the headstock. I sent him a message to let me know if he finds out it's a laminate piece. I will bet you there is a good chance it is.

will be interesting to find out....I just emailed a few folks who ought to know as well...will let you know what I get as a response.

Oh Dan, you're driving me nuts with this, just do it man!

Before I do and have Pat refinish it in Black.

only a matter of time before I heard that.....

hahaha!! HEY! maybe I will have him refinish it Ferrari red for me?
Take off the plastic laminate thing.
Paint the wooden headstock to match red.
Park a white pearloid pickguard on it...hmmm? would look killer with the white blocks.
ya got me thinking now Bart!!!
A one off Ferrari Red DPLEII???? :hiding:

that would be HOT!!! (and cheaper than getting a US one!)

Doesn't matter, so long as the fretboard dots are clay.

oh brother.....:scowl:

Bart Bart BARRRRT!
you are a bad influence my friend :eyebrow:

me too....DO IT!!!

I'd get a Dunn and find a DS pickup before I'd refin a rare Dudepit.

maybe BUT that would look sweet.....he would not have to find a DS....

What's the nut width on a Dudepit anyway? Just curious.

they are jazz necks...

I'd molest one w/ a 2nd pickup.... I know this from experience, and that might just be a sin... not sure. So, I'll resist GASing for a DPLEII at this time :).

2 DS's would be nice....but finding the second could be an issue...

My wife did the certs for the DPLE I and I think they used the same ones for the second series so technically I have certs for these BUT none of them are signed of course.

interesting! did they actually send the certs out with the basses?

That is much easier said than Dunn. (I know...nice, right?)

Darkstars are rarer on the used markets than the DPLE II's these days and if you find one expect to pay a whole lot for it.

I agree......and a refin'd DP (if done right) might still be valuable...

Finally got my hands on a DJ .... It joins my DD. MIK, 2006, seller said it had been Plek'd at Lakland, came with an Audere Z3 preamplifier with 3 band EQ.
Great playing and feeling bass, perfect balance. I generally prefer passive basses, but this is the best preamplifier I have experience with and it is opening my eyes and ears.

sweet! congrats!

That 07 of yours is kinda hiding in that pic...that one demands to be out front...LOL.

Now you just need a band with that rig of yours, you need to play out, right now!

I agree on both counts!!! enough closet playing Gordon....get out there and flaunt your lakies!!!

PS - you need a custom one painted like your truck! Bumblebeelakie!

you guys make me laugh!!!

BOTH of you kinda came into this whole Lakie thing with alot of trepidation...

Brian...I remember a time when you were going to sell the lakie and go back to other "stealth basses".....and Dan? i remember texts/emails/calls when you said you have a nice mix of Lakies and "another brand"...

now you guys are addicted...hillarious....but I KNEW it would happen! ('cause it happened to me!)

:smug::hyper::D

Lakie on guys!

Yep, stealth, who knew. Now the thing is to find one at a good price as it's going to take a few ducats to get it refinished, routed and add all the electronics. Probably will go the Skyline route as I like to be hands-on with most of the modifications and don't want to just "order" one that way.

Hey Congrats, I know you hated to do it :D but if it wasn't getting that much play time with all the new Laklands, it's best that it was rolled to make room for more.... wait for it.... Laklands!

........."wait for it.... Laklands"

HAHAHAH!!

agreed

totally :D

You came to the right place!!!

I had both a DJ4 and a DJ5 and the quality was top notch!

as for the US models, here are the main differences:

1) choice of wood in US models
2) Graphite supported neck (on 4 strings...Skyline 4s do not have the graphite whereas Skylne 5ers (and ALL US models) do)
3) quarter sawn necks (theoretically more "stable" over time)
4) choice of colors

that is it....electronics are the same....

if you oiek the natural look...keep an eye out....there are several Natural Skyline DJs out there and they DO come up for sale now and again....

I have always said that I would put the Skylinses up against US Fenders and feel that (overall) the Sky,line would win....

if you want a new one, act soon....I hear they are going fast.....

good luck and enjoy the DJ!!!:D

Hi Lakland experts, I have decided to buy a Darril Jones 4 strings, and I would like to know besides the looks of the Us made vs Skyline, what other upgrades do you get from the Us series. What I want to understand is if it is really worthy to spend that whole lot of money. I like the Natural model (Adam Clayton had one) if I have the Skyline I will go for the metal grey gun.

Fortunately I could sell a few things to buy any of them.

I am an amateur, but learning and preparing fast for playing at a bar mainly rock, grunge, alternative and Latin.

So what should You recommend me to do? is a Skyline more recommendable than a Fender American Deluxe Jazz?

Thanks

Haha, just taking a jab like you sometimes do.;) Some are, yes, others are not. I'm very disappointed at the popularity of one candidate who is definitely "not". But I'd better stop there...

I figured it was all in fun.....we need to talk about whaich you are speaking.....YUP...we better BOTH stop....
