Las Vegas Shooting

There is some part of the population with diseased minds who seize on an event like this as an opportunity to make up conspiracy theory crap out of thin air - usually directed at a group they don't like - and try to spread it verbally, on the internet and through social media. I find this to be absolutely despicable. Nearly as bad are the people who are so warped and prejudiced against others as to believe this trash.

I'm so sorry that your family was impacted by this but I'm glad they made it out alive. I don't have children but I can empathise with your cousin seeing his daughter harmed by such an act: I can imagine this is a very difficult event to have lived through. I hope they both fully recover physically and emotionally from this. If they need any help at all (medical bills, etc...) please let us know (or PM me) and I will help in any way I can.
Thank you so much for your empathy and your offer. They are doing OK and should be fine. The ones that need the most support and prayers are the families of those who didn't make it out alive. Our hearts go out to them and to all that were injured.

Criminals don't play by the rules. If they are determined to cause harm they will seek out ways to do it, hopefully they are caught before reaching they're goal. The problem is the shear numbers of weapons available if you know how to procure them , legally or not , the end result is probably not going to end well, I'm not sure you can legislate away mass murder, Sadly, no amount of conceal and carry was going to stop what happened in Vegas. I pray this does not set a precedent for others intent on doing harm on a mass scale in the future.

Lots of folks helping others here. One guy stole a truck, loaded up wounded in the back and drove them to the hospital. He made two trips before the ambulances got there.

Jonathan Smith risked his own life helping people find their way out of danger. He ended up getting shot in the neck himself. This is what he said about himself. "I don't deem myself as a hero," he told ABC. "I just deem myself as someone that was doing the right thing."
Maybe this incident can be an encouragement for all of us to work together. Doesn't seem like people were asking about race, religion, politics or anything else but were just doing there best to help other human beings.

NPR OnPoint had a great discussion of this today. Everyone, from every perspective, was very thoughtful and passionate.

But as usual, no obvious solution. Not in a country with our history, and as large, diverse, and polarized.

I'm sure that some NPR critics will have a knee-jerk negative reaction to NPR covering an incident like this, but I found their coverage today to be outstanding.

I have been listening to their coverage as well. I prefer over the network radio stations that mostly blast 30 second bulletins. NPR goes more in depth.

Good people right there, and the world is actually full of them. They are everywhere.

NPR is the finest reporting today, regardless of what the right wing says. They also have the largest reporting staff overseas of any network. In places like the middle east, NPR has more correspondents than the "Big Three" US TV networks combined.

As Slobake points out, their work is especially valuable because they invest time in telling more of the story. Where you may get 30 seconds on your Big 3 affiliate, you can often get 5-10 minutes on the same story from NPR, getting into more detail and providing a lot more information.

Incidentally, there is an excellent watchdog news organization which many people don't know about, Pro Publica. Home — ProPublica They are oriented to investigative reporting, and they get into really interesting stories. I recommend their website and their reporting.

Public radio relies heavily on listener donations to keep them in business, its really not in there best interest to alienate any potential donor no matter what there political tendencies might be. Commercial media is beholden to the corporate business world. I have never found NPR to be lefty commie liberals as some may frame them as, I think they do a good job at presenting as many view points as they can and leave it to the listener to make up they're own mind

The numbers in this incident are staggering to me.

Even given the elevation of the shooter and the weapons he used, it still amazes me that he managed to hit so many. I'm not sure how long he fired, but the fact that there were so many people so close together resulted in a nearly incredible injury toll.

It will be interesting to see, in the days and weeks to come, how many were actually hit by bullets, and how many were injured or killed in the stampede

Mod hat on -

I think fhm555’s post should be allowed because it is informational - many shooters already know this but most nonshooters do not, and there is a lot of misinformation bouncing around out there right now. Using fhm555’s post as a jumping off point for divisive gun discussion will not be tolerated, though.

fhm555, one thing I would change in your post is the word “functioning” in your first paragraph should really be “functional” - a crank or recoil type device simulates full auto, but it doesn’t convert it.

The police are saying that the shooter had a gun or guns with a bump stock. Never heard of this but I don't know much about guns. I read that a bump stock is legal and allows a gun to fire up to 400 rounds per minute. That may explain how the shooter was able to get off so many rounds.
