I somewhat recently came back after about 2 years away. TalkBass is pretty low quality, in terms of community. The moderation isn't bad - they'll react when things are reported, but otherwise they don't appear to pay much attention and things can go on for days or weeks without them noticing. I only actively participate in this thread and the main Dingwall group thread at this point. After I started my time away, I found myself a ton more appreciative of my gear, and found myself progressing as a musician at a much more agreeable rate as well. There's probably a balance that could be found, but, I can only read so much about the new cheap flavor of the month and Dr. Cheese self-aggrandizing threads before my eyes gloss over - and it's a very very low amount
I like the much smaller and tighter group among us Dingwall folks.

I'm a Rio Dream owner, and I'm also a User Experience designer. This has meant that while I'm mostly very pleased with the bass - it sounds and plays brilliantly - it does have a number of UX niggles that have irritated me.
There are several examples of a "That'll do" solution to a problem, which frankly I wasn't expecting from my first Dingwall - even if it is one based on their "basic" Combustions (if $2500 can ever be considered basic!)
Blank knobs: well, these do the absolute bare minimum of what you need a parameter-changing control to do. I guess going with blank knobs saves on all that pesky aligning of markers and grub-screw anchoring at construction time, which shaves off a few minutes/cents, and makes for a better solution for everyone... except the end user.
As seems to be the consensus from this admittedly small sample group, the worst offender is the pickup selector knob. A simple line or dot would be a start - albeit, again, the least-effort solution. It's entirely possible to engineer, design and manufacture some sort of specialised pickup selector knob - perhaps one that has a window which reveals a graphic of the selected pickup configuration, for example. I'd like to see Sheldon apply some of that "ingenuity without breaking the bank" - that the team have applied to this new bridge - to his instruments' user interfaces.
Would it cost more? Sure. But that thoughtful attention to detail would not go unnoticed by us users... and it's attention to details like these which elevate the instruments you love over the instruments you like.
This isn't just a Dingwall thing, of course. The benchmark for bass/guitar user interfaces is a very low one, and one that's seldom questioned or addressed by manufacturers. And it is partly our fault too - us electric stringed instrument players are a conservative bunch, highly wary of innovation. Just count how many active basses still don't have a low battery indicator. It's insane.
Anyway, enough of my profession-fuelled grumbling! I've ordered one of the Fret Nation upgrade sets, so I'll soon have a slightly better - if still far from optimal - solution to the knob issue [as well as the matching tuners - which I was blissfully unaware of until one of you pointed it out, so thanks]
Canadian knobs!! Love 'em! I don't need/want markings because I just adjust by feel (relative to the "notch" at flat and sound for whatever needs tweaking on the fly. But the Canadian knobs do have a small circular indent as a visual referent. Fret Nation has been my "go-to" for components. Jason Mendelson incredibly attentive.
Got it! (#53)….I prefer the cream pickguard over the black one because aesthetically because I think it resembles the RIO LP cover more closely

Admittedly, I'm the fool who bought this one. When I heard about this model coming out I called Grasshopper at Bass Central and he just said you'll never get one of those 82. I didn't do my homework at all. I grabbed it when I saw it without doing my diligence. Then later did some searching and realized I got hosed price-wise. I haven't heard back from them yet and thought about seeing if they would cancel my order, not that I don't want it, but now I probably have the distinction of being the guy who paid the most for one of these. Not a good feeling - but I only have myself to blame. Live and learn (hopefully!).

I got mine a few weeks back but only paid a little more than retail because the dealer wanted his import fees recouped
You're too kind Mark, I need to get beat up for this...lol Seriously, I've let myself down by not following my usually diligent research. The Japanese market tends to be higher but usually not to this extent. I wonder if Sheldon would care? Probably not, his dealers can charge whatever they think the market will bear. Anyway, assuming it's coming my way, the consensus seems to be they are excellent basses, albeit not worth what I'm paying. If you had it to do all over again would you purchase it again (at the correct price point, of course)?
I've jumped way too quick with other basses in the past. You are in good company with many of us. With that said, though you may have paid a bit high at the moment, down the road a bit I'm sure this will end up as a good investment. I'll probably sell mine down the road as value increases. I know that it is a great investment, and as such I'm a bit afraid to play it very much as I want to keep it pristine. Plus I recently bought an NGC-3 which for the most part does the same thing and satisfies my Dingwall appetite.
Thanks for your thoughts on this. Did you consider getting the regular production model at all? Or was it the allure of a limited edition JT that caused you to purchase?
I am new to the Dingwall "family" and now have two already. I bought the Kyle Konkiel 5 that was for sale here and absolutely love it, it's a wonderful bass. Then I picked up a D-Roc 4 (also on TB) and am stunned at how much I like it. It was a total surprise and I think a great bargain at under $1,400. So far so good! I'm thrilled with both of these instruments.
It will only Sting until you get it and start playing with it.
