Double Bass New EA VL208?

I just posted something similar in another thread. Like the highest key on a piano being less than 4200 Hz.
Maybe I am missing something. But as I said in that post too, I would have to think that the folks at EA evaluated the sonic (and other) tradeoffs here and decided it was worth doing.

While I am not someone who minds big heavy gear ("I am a simple caveman..."), I gotta admit, I'm REALLY looking forward to trying out this EA nano-rig! Or, to try an 'old school meets new school' mini-mite by driving a VL-108 (or two) with the Micro 300!

Oh, where is that drool smiley...?Marcus Miller blew the speakers in the CM208 at the NAMM show today and it's making the guys at EA have second thoughts about using the ceramic magnets. Don't know what impact this will have on the projected production date.
Reefer, maybe I'm confused, but there is a Marcus Miller (I mean, how many could there be) who was supposed to have played with trumpeter Chris Botti last night and tonight in Durham, NC.
I did not go to the show. But I heard about it on one of the local jazz radio stations. Scroll halfway down [Invalid or Expired Link Removed] page.
Also, I did not think there was a production date set for the CM-208. Last I heard was the heads up from Freddels about Bob G's proposal on the Dudepit for a limited run, posted earlier in this thread (post #289 on 12/11/06). I checked the web site, where Bob said:
"FYI, there is a possibility of a limited, exclusive Gollihur Music run of the CM208 cabs. (I post this with Steve's permission)

The CM208 is on the floor at NAMM this week!! I find it hard to believe they would have it there if they weren't planning on production.
Sorry bro, I googled but I still don't see where you saw that Marcus blew up a CM-208 at NAMM in Anaheim on January 20. I am trying to find an actual review of the [Invalid or Expired Link Removed] I thought he was reportedly doing at the Carolina Theatre w/ Chris Botti on Jan. 19 & 20, but so far no luck. If you can post a link to this NAMM thing you saw, that would be cool, maybe we can figure it out.
Maybe the CM-208 was on the floor at NAMM. That would be cool too. But I think several good reasons why it may never go to production are pretty well documented earlier in this thread, and as evidenced by the (lack of) response to Bob's proposal over on the Dudepit for a limited production run. I know that I am grossly oversimplifying it, but basically, it's about the money. Not profitable enough, esp. w/ new things coming out of the EA pipeline like the Micro head and the Wizzy 10 that would seem to have a much more promising future, economically speaking.
Not saying that's right or wrong, good or bad, just the way it is apparently. Bidness is bidness. Supply and demand basically. Maybe they were hoping the CM-208 would generate a "buzz" at NAMM that would somehow help it reach a critical mass that would push things forward. If it blew up like you said, it probably had the opposite effect. I'm not sure what happened, but I would like to know more.
Other news - I did notice on Bob G's web site that in addition to the Wizzy 10, you can also order an M-line Wizzy w/ the 12" driver, in 4 or 8 ohm models. Yes, it seemed that, despite our internal enthusiasm for the 208 cab, it didn't seem a practical candidate for production.
One of my concerns was weight-- with the trend towards lighter gear, and the past URB player enthusiasm over the VL208, it seemed like such a heavy cab would go over like... well, a lead speaker cabinet, especially with the lighter EA candiate making a debut.
However, Larry called me from the show floor yesterday with the news that the driver company has committed to make a Neo 8" driver for the cabinet, which would lighten the cab by about 11 lbs. So the enthusiasm is still there, but it's also a matter of Build It but first Make Sure They Will Come.

Larry gave the impression that this cab was slated for production, but I may misunderstood. I think he was looking for a reason to switch to the Neo's. Between Marcus blowing it up and the phone call from his manufacturer it was easy decision. Now let's just hope it makes the streets.
Amen! Going back to the Neo route w/ the weight reduction would change the formula I bet, when you look at it from a potential buyer's perspective and then in turn from a business perspective for EA. Like Reefer said, let's hope it makes it this time.

I heard from John that he suspects is is the soldered tin leads, which are not as good on their hand-made prototype models as they are on the production models. Either way, the new drivers will have the same motor that is in the NL-210 and Wizzy 10, so this will not be a fear with the production model. Unfortunate timing, though, for it to fail.

I was there when Marcus played through it, and I also confirmed with John that the NM-208 will see production, weighing in at 30 lbs, and supposedly sounding even better than the CM-208.

This is good news indeed. My guess is that it will still take them a while to find a suitable driver, since, as it stands right now, only two companies actually build an 8" Neo Driver, Eminence, and B&C, and as far as I can tell the Eminence version isn't even commercially avaliable. It was most likely a prototype built for EA or Ampeg since they are the only companies that have build cabinets or amps with 8" Neo's in them (prototypes in EA's case). It may take a little while for the technology (neo's) to catch up with the quality (EA's).

According to John, he just recently did get the right driver lined up. It will have the same motor/voice coil as the 10" driver in the NL-210.
It looks like CM-208 will see the day light after all... Invalid Link Removed. No reference to the NM-208. And by the way, the two wizzys 10 stack looks great!!!
