Double Bass New EA VL208?

Can anyone comment whether or not the M-line design would notably effect or improve off-axis dispersion v. the L-line?

Tom, for example, I'm sure you compared the M-line Wizzy to the regular Wizzy. I am still catching up from a 4 month hiatus from TB after a very, very busy summer and fall, so if I just haven't gotten to that post of yours yet, I apologize.

Tom, for example, I'm sure you compared the M-line Wizzy to the regular Wizzy. I am still catching up from a 4 month hiatus from TB after a very, very busy summer and fall, so if I just haven't gotten to that post of yours yet, I apologize.

I find that the regular Wizzy already has excellent off-axis dispersion due to the nature of how the sound radiates from the whizzer cone. So, I kinda expected the M-line Wizzy to have excellent off-axis response as well. But, in so doing, I am surely not giving enough credit to what the m-line is contributing. As I noted with the NM-410, the side vents do seem to help the cab to cover a huge sonic footprint (for more details, check out the current issue of Guitar World's Bass Guitar Magazine ;)). The M-line Wizzy (and CM-208) seem to share this trait, though obviously the larger NM-410 plants a bigger footprint.

I suspect the advantage of the M-line transmission line is that it has allowed EA to stuff a longer line into the cab, with the resulting lower roll-off frequency. I doubt very much that the location of the 'ports' has any bearing at all on the sound.

As the transmission line only really affects the low frequency response it is unlikely to affect the dispersion.

You can actually hear the notes coming out of the port. Yes, it is quite low, but if you walk around the cab, you do notice it. My drummer commented on it right away, before I had said anything about the cab (NM-410).

When you say 'the notes' are you talking about the first and second harmonics below about 100Hz or are you talking about actual midrange frequencies? The latter would be very weird considering a transmission line is designed to absorb midrange reflections whilst augmenting the bottom by placing the backwave in phase with the frontwave - but anything's possible!

Good point, I am talking about audible low frequency information, not midrange or specific 'notes' per se. I apologize for the misleading choice of verbiage. :rollno:

That's fine then, all makes sense - the whole point of ports or transmission lines is that audible low frequency information comes out of them to augment the speaker's output. We'll let you off for the misleading verbiage this time. ;)

But the size of the source is so small compared to the wavelengths at these frequencies that the output is omnidirectional down there and dispersion will be just as you'd expect from any similarly sized cab with similar frequency response.

This results in the following response: Omnidirectional in the lows, then fairly well dispersed but forwards only in the low-mids, gradually transitioning to beaming in the low-treble, then better dispersion as the speaker crossses over to the tweeter, and finally more directional in the tweeter's upper range. You can't beat physics, sadly...

Mind you, EA do use those clever composite cones to free up the centre of the woofer to provide better off-axis response so you can achieve near 3-way frequency and polar response from a 2-way design.

Though it's totally irrelevant in the doghouse world, I'd love to see an NL310 with the same tall thin format as the VL/CXL310 but all the weight benefits of the new designs. So much easier to get through doorways than the NM410 but probably loud enough for most gigs. Alternatively an NL110 would allow you to make a similar modular rig - and be a nice tiny little cab for low volume situations - go on EA!

That CX-310 is a most impressive sounding cab, but dang, is it a heavy beast! A neo version would be very interesting. :)
 
I haven't seen it posted on TB yet, but All Hail Bob posted on the DudePit that he might be able to get EA to do a limited run of the CM-208 cab if there's interest and he can get firm orders for at least 25 units. He thinks the street price will be around $895. :p :p

No problem, it was my pleasure! I was able to use the CM-208 one last time in practice last night before sending it back to EA. Playing electric bass with one guitar and drums, I gotta say this thing kills. It is very reminiscent of the VL-208 under these circumstances. Solo playing, or playing upright, seems to bring out more of the individual characteristics of these cabs, though. I just wish that I could have tried it in an upright gig setting, but alas, I don't have many upright gigs lined up at the moment.

But John, Larry, Gary, Mike, it was a pleasure and a privilege to be able to audition this cab! Thank you. :)

Is anyone else on the list that gets to try these out? (After you get, who gets it next?) I'm just wondering if we can get more input on the CM208.
 
Another thing: I know this are just specs but the wizzy 10, even though it is a VERY appealing cab, seems to lack a LITTLE bit of hi end (wizzy 12 - 12khz; wizzy 10 - 5.5khz). Has anyone heard the wizzy 10? Bob?

Bob or any other EA rep? David poses a very good question. Why is there such a huge difference in the high end frequency response of the Wizzy 10 and the Wizzy 12?

With the smaller 10" driver, we wanted to really be able to control the low end. Therefore we used a 2.5" motor structure rather than the 2.0" motor in the Wizzy 12. Consequently the motor structure on the Wizzy10 is heavier than
the one on the Wizzy12 due to the increase in diameter as well as the copper wire as opposed to copper clad aluminum wire of the WZ-12. The additional weight accounts for the difference in high end frequency response.

Hugh McDonald has been out field testing the Wizzy 10 for many of his local gigs
