NHL Season 2022-23

Being an Avs fan I'm pretty sure it's Roy. Somewhere in the back of my mind I seem to recall that he's tied with someone else though.
I was thinking Brodeur, but I looked it up and am wrong. He had 13 consecutive.
Taking a detour from the usual game action, I wondered about NHL players' contracts and what they actually take home, so I did a little googling of the subject yesterday.
A player on a $6M/yr contract. After NHLPA escrow, Federal tax, state tax (if applicable), agent's commission, union dues, etc, he's bringing home about $2.8M. That's an average, because while some places (TX, FL, TN, WA) have no state tax, other places (CA, NY, MN) have high state taxes.
Players in Canada have even higher federal taxes, so Austin Matthews (Toronto) for example is bringing home only about 46% of his paycheck, while Jamie Benn (Dallas) gets to keep about 63%.
Not making any type of commentary (political or otherwise), but just thought it was interesting to learn what the gross vs net was for pro athletes.

It gets a little more complicated as many US states (and cities that have local income taxes like New York) collect taxes on the visiting players. This may actually help the Canada-based players.

A lot of pre-season pundits were saying this was the year Boston possibly slides out of the playoff picture, due to injuries starting the season, and their older core. Instead, the B's set the frickin' wins record.
Not a Bruins fan, but can't help but respect their consistent effort all season long. In some ways they remind me of those Cup-winning Red Wing teams, where every player had a certain role and they played that role to near-perfection.
When the Bruins brought on Montgomery and let Cassidy go, a lot of us fans were surprised. From the outside looking in, it seemed like Cassidy was the least of their problems and had a superior track record as coach. Evidently there must have been some kind of issue in the locker room that wasn't going in the right direction, and it seems like the team collectively has really bought into what Montgomery brings. The Bruins front office deserves credit for getting Krejci back and bolstering the line-up with Orlov and Bertuzzi, and not letting Pastrnak's contract become a sideshow.The Flyers played a decent game yesterday, but I can't remember who they played.

It'll be interesting to see where the Bruins land after all is said and done. If they don't make it to the finals all of this happiness, with almost everything going in their favor to this point, will leave a bad taste. They are an entertaining bunch to watch though, and I don't know how other teams are going to game-plan against them. They'll beat you 2-1 or 7-4, and transition from each style comfortably.
Friggin' Pens. They HAVE to win to control their playoff destiny, so what better way to address that than by hosting the lowly Blackhawks?
But wait, while the Pens dominated play for much of the game, they couldn't finish on so many chances and the 'Hawks skated away with a 5-2 win, basically killing any chances the Pens have to qualify for the post season. With everything riding on this game, how the he** do you lose to a blanking lottery team? At home?

Nice little Florida vacation before the playoffs....2 games, 4 points. Judging by last night's festivities, I don't think those teams like each other very much. Should be a good series.Stupid "Bolts". I don't like our chances against the Leafs or the Bruins.
And if the Panthers get in(?)and somehow wind up playing against the Lightning, it'll make Tuesday night's game look like a love-in.
Ok. I quit talking about my Avs because it seemed like I might be jinxing them. But I'll go out on a limb once more. Finally they made it to first in the Central so if they hang for 2 games they'll have home ice for at least the first couple of rounds.
Pens officially eliminated, their 16-yr playoff run ending with the Islanders' victory over Montreal. Kinda bummed but in all honesty, they wouldn't have gone very far anyway. Too many glaring holes that would only be magnified even more under playoff hockey.
Maybe this will wake up the owners, Fenway Sports Group, and they'll address what's wrong with the current management staff. Hextall is a train wreck and nobody really knows exactly what Brian Burke does. Problem is, the Pens are like fourth on the priority list of FSG. Many of us Pens fans share the belief that as long as they turn a profit, FSG really doesn't care. We'll see shortly.
Now I gotta figure out who's bandwagon to jump on for the post-season.
