Schecter Owners Club, part 3

IMG-20130425-02902_zps9f3903ec.jpg

Aguilar Dual Ceramics coming soon!

EMG 40HZs and the stock EMG BTS pre up for grabs if anyone wants them.

Question for you Schecter owners -- Is a used Schecter Custom 4 a good deal at $350? What should I look for when I check it out? Thanks!

that's in the ballpark. check GC's used site, they have a few at $300. things to look out for with pretty much any bass is a good neck that isnt warped, properly working electronics, ding/dents/wear not mentioned. if it checks out, it's not a bad price, but you can find cheaper if you're diligent.

nice elite-5. i've got an '09 model and it's the only 5 that's stuck with me. wish they wouldn't have discontinued them.

Very much appreciated. I was honestly shocked by this bass. I bought it a number of years ago when MF pumped them out at $199 shipped. I think I was more fortunate than most with it finish wise. That top is more bookmatched than I've seen some customs have. It's honestly why I decided to keep it long term as it was just a fun, cheap venture initially. Schecter has the best quality per dollar hands down in my opinion.

I'm just excited to see how the Aguilars do in it.

It looks as if the post that started this was pulled and jlepre's answer is most likely why, as well as perfectly correct...not to be a jerk or anything, but there are rules here that are not optional (if you're not familiar with them, they're stickied and linked to at the top of this page). Responding to such posts is a really good way of getting this thread shut down permanently. I'm serious.

i didn't feel i was wrong responding because he wasnt trying to get an appraisal of a bass that he owned, he was asking if an already set price of a bass was a good deal. to me, there's a difference. but, if the mods feel that there's no difference between the two and i'm wrong, then they will tell me.

$199:eek:
that's a steal right there.
now im curious about your electronics upgrade. are the aggie pickups active or passive? and if they're passive and you're pairing them with a preamp, will you be running them with an active/passive switch?

Yep. It was when they were moving manufacturing from Korea. Musicians's Friend wa depleting inventory and was obnoxiously cheap. I bought it and didn't even want it lol. Quilted maple tops..neck through..gold hardware..burst finish..emg pickups...all things I typically don't like but on this bass it just worked.

The Aguilars are passive and I'll be wiring Volume, Blend (MN and ungrounded), Tone, Tone. I've found myself always "needing" preamp mentally but I've discovered that I very rarely actually utilizing onboard EQ so I'm moving away from putting a preamp in. If I need one, I'll probably do Aguilar or Glockenklang, but for now I'll see how everything is without one as this will be my first true venture fully passive.

that's what i did with my elite as well. had the preamp pull and wired V/B/T/T with .022 caps
i left the stock HZs and it sounds pretty good as a passive bass.

You know, I forgot to order caps. Maybe radioshack will have something that will work.

I'm curious about the V/B/T/T set up as I've never had dual tone on bass before. I'm hoping that allows me to straddle the fence of no preamp and still having a decent amount of tone shaping. I'm also hoping that blend knob mod works well enough for me to be satisfied. I've struggled with blend knobs over the years, but I despise having more than a single volume.

the blend knob is not the best, and works more like a 3-way switch. the tone controls are 500k pots with the .022 caps, and the range isnt quite the best. there's basically 3 settings on the tone controls
1 - closed
2 - half
3 - full
although i do like the closed as the .022 rolls off mainly the highs but leaves the mids and lows alone, so it's not as muddy sounding as your usual tone control. i did read that using a .1 cap gives you a wider range of tones throughout the sweep so i may look into swapping caps.
