Stoner/Doom Bassists Thread, Part 90: Maxed Out

Very cool, was estimated another week and got it today along with my daisy chain, that was supposed to be here (not shown).

Thanks to earth city sound. Conviently located in McKinney Texas, 30 min from my door. They also gave me a "no 9v adapter 9v adapter" so very cool. I asked in my email to them to send me any weird free promo swag stuff, I always do this as most companies get all kinds of stuff and tend not to pass it on for some reason.

Gotta love that piece of paper folded beneath the pedal in its packaging. "This things cheap, but don't worry! It's supposed to be!"

Morning dudes. P project is done. Here's the Black Beauty:

Need to lower the action slightly, otherwise it's good to go. Sounding beastly!
Very cool.

Did they remove the praise and worship thread?

I wanted to ask how many make gear choices based on names. Like would a Mormon play a Big muff, or a Christian rocker a hail satan? Would you play a clone of rehoused circuit or is it tainted by original name and perceived use/meaning?

*enter weird idea* There was a Mormon company that used to do edited movies for modesty until copywrite lawsuits took them down. Wonder if there's a market for Christian themed circuits, never made with the intention of playing the Devils music.
Did they really remove the P&W thread? That's hilarious, if so.

And highly amusing thought question.

I remember a thread about people not wanting to play or covering up some pedals with tape to hide the graphics/names.
That's just silly.

There was a thread in Effects forum not long ago about Abominable DSOM and it got immediately derailed by dude saying that he had a Hail Satan, it sounded awesome, but it was against his beliefs and had to sell it and he condemns this company yadda yadda yadda.
Why did he buy it in the first place, then, I wonder?

Yeah $30 in parts the rest labor. They replaced a couple caps and transistor but my guy wouldn't charge that ridiculous amount.
My dude usually charges a flat $55 rate for typical amp maintenance. Meaning cleaning everything, any resoldering, replacing the cheap stuff. Tubes cost extra, obviously.

Jesus can't see through duct tape. It's why he became a carpenter instead of a plumber, according the Book of Lowes.

If interested I make a "sinning bag" basically a large duct tape sleeping bag to keep premarital and extramarital affairs on the down low with the guy up high.

I'll take the Mississippi church rig and watch a movie while spending some quality time cleaning and getting to know my new setup. That's why I'll never take gear to a tech unless I absolutely want to keep it. Most repairs cost too much to pay someone.

Worst offender is the guy who buys a Squier then pays a guy to pimp it out then posts it with an itemized list of labor and parts that prove his $100 guitar is really a $1,000 custom piece.

I am curious now how much we've influenced prices on certain "budget brands".
A lot. Sunn was cheap back in the 90s. Peavey T-40s have definitely gone up in price lately.

I only have the aforementioned Yeti Metal (sold my Hail Satan) but I ordered the God Botherer fuzz/phaser. Interesting 2-for-1 and it's supposed to do well on bass. I may also check the FZ-2 clone if that gets rolled out; that's supposed to have separate foot switches for fuzz 1 and fuzz 2.
:) I couldn't resist the God Botherer either. Impatiently waiting so I can piss off the drummer some more. Happy to hear you gave the Magick Fuzz some more tries. I honestly didn't give it a fair shake.

Thanks mang. It's pretty cool to have my first bass back in the rotation and sounding/looking great. Learned to play on it, first band with it, first gig with it, etc. etc. Dem nostalgia toanz! :p

Aw now that's cool. I didn't know that. My "nostalgia bass" was a Tokai P copy I bought for $75 at a pawn shop in Tulsa circa 1985. It paid for itself at a gig that night and I played it solid the next 12 years or so, more shows than I can count.

Thing never let me down. I was fairly rough with it, but hardly ever had to even tune it.

I hear ya, man. I almost didn't give it a fair shake (on bass) after jamming it on guitar. Glad I did. It's weird how sometimes you can get this mindset of "that's a guitar pedal" or "that's a bass pedal." Easy to miss tone opportunities that way.

I may know where to find a souped up Squier to sell you for multi hundreds of dollars. :D

Did that with the Bluebeard thought guitar only for a long time. But might of got nudged back off in favor of GS.

Ok, probably a stupid question. I've been on a fuzz quest. Have tried plenty that I like, currently have 2 I love. Models don't matter for this question. I typically set stuff on my fuzzes to get a good sound I think will work in the mix when I'm alone, i.e. not with others jamming. Find lots of amazing tones that seem to work. But then they instantly get lost in the mix when I play. And it's totally lost, not just certain frequencies. So here goes: do you just have to crank volume on a fuzz to get it in the mix? I feel like I set my fuzzes (out of the mix) to be slightly higher than unity gain, but then today, I just kept cranking and it got better, but not amazing yet. Should I just dime it, then reduce volume as necessary? Am I doing something wrong? Also, while not technically a fuzz, will a DOD250 work? I've tried them in the past, always liked them, but similar story to my fuzz. Found a deal I couldn't pass up and it should be here tomorrow. Maybe less EQ/options is more?

TLDR Version - Love fuzz solo, think tones will work in mix. ALWAYS lost in mix. Should I just dime volume? Is that normal for fuzzes? Also, same for DOD250?

How do you eq everything. What does your guitarist do and what's he using.

I think a gk should stand out easily if your not cutting the mids and squashing it a ton.

I typically just boost mids on my amp, and also on my bass. Treble and bass are pretty flat. I usually boost mids on the pedals as well, if that's an option. I'm not going for massive low end, I want lows but with some bite to it so I can stand out in the mix. But that's it, I hear the bass and treble, not mids! Guitar does his own thing, my bass lines are typically in their own space, i.e. we're not just doing the same riff.

If it helps, I have the Supercollider (newest version) and the standard Pharaoh. Pharaoh won out a bit today, but still not amazing in the mix. It KILLS at low volume, when we're all jamming somewhat quietly. It's at unity gain then, so should I just bump up the volume when we get louder? My other effects still seem to be the same volume, or at least much closer to unity. Is it an audio trick that since we hear higher notes "better" as humans that with lower volume I feel like I need less volume, and when we turn up I need more to account for only hearing highs and feeling bass? I'm just so lost. I should be able to find a fuzz that works for me out of my options, but I just can't seem to.

I have been super intrigued by the Magick Fuzz. I almost jumped on one of the last production runs, but decided it wasn't the best financial choice at the time. I would be anxious to hear it through GZRs. Could you do some low gain settings as well? I know thats against the S/D groups general MO but I like to stack my fuzzes without it going into fart territory. I am also really interested in some of Dunn O))) effects stuff. He is a local guy who is appears to be gaining a legitimate following. He does a rams head clone, that I think he told me was originally based on a Bluebeard that he calls the Black Beard. He has invited me over a couple times to check out his studio but I just haven't had the time. He does have a killer collection of old amps though.

FOR GODSAKES MAN GO TO THE DUNNO)))GEON. Hes a regular poster on a lot of FB amp pages. He makes awesome pedals and has dank amps.

I think the only pedal I have that was actually made for bass is my wah. Everything else is marketed primarily towards guitar.

For me, the EHX Big Muff is totally unusable by itself in a mix. I keep it on the board because its mid scoop actually sounds good with wah.

What are the tone controls on your fuzzes? Do they just have silly "tone" knobs?

I usually have higher than unity gain.

The fuzz I actually use for just regular lines sometimes is the Swollen Pickle (usually only at the ends of a couple songs with Catapult, and when the guitar isn't playing rhythm with Dustern), and on that I have the scoop dialed all the way out, and the filter a little past noon. The actual "sustain" I have set real low. Just a bit of extra gnarliness.

He is a cool guy. I really need to pay him a visit. He lives in the city I used to work in and the city where my girls folks live. It's about halfway to my parents from my place.

As far as getting fuzz to cut, most of my boxes have a mid knob. I usually find gain settings I like and then adjust the mids and tone when I hear it in the mix. If you stack it with the 250 set your gain pretty low on the fuzz and drive it harder with the 250. That's what I do with the speaker cranker and I think those two pedals are fairly similar or at least serve a similar function.

Both of my basses have numerous tone controls. The Supercollider has a standard tone, mids, and mass (bass) controls. If the tone goes up past noon, it seems to lose bass, regardless of the mass knob's position. The Pharaoh has a standard tone and a hi knob that mixes in the original signal with the affected signal.

I'm not planning on stacking the fuzz and 250, I was thinking of running one or the other. I know the 250 dooms pretty well, so I thought I might try that, since without all the extraneous tone knobs I might get a more useable sound, or at least get one much quicker. It seemed like no matter how I adjusted the tone last night, the fuzz wasn't present. That's what started my initial inquiry, because I loved the sound of the fuzz, and at low volume jamming it killed. So I'm just thinking I might need to crank the volume on the fuzz when we play louder and say forget unity gain.
