Stoner/Doom Bassists Thread, Part 90: Maxed Out

Beta bass updated tone report: Got to a/b my VB2 and beta bass at practice last night. I was surprised. As awesome as the beta bass' dirty tone is it had no real "muscle". I got a lot more deep bass and headroom out of the peavey. I suspect the resonance and presence controls on the peavey played a part in that. Tubez too. With the beta I was lost in the mix (2 wide open half stacks and drums) completely. I tried about every eq setting possible. Really bummed me out.

That doesn't surprise me. It's only 100 watts, which may be a LOUD 100watts, but for a bass head fighting against two cranked full stacks, 100 watts a ain't gonna cut it. It's a tone head for sure though.

If you want to make it sound like something it's not, easiest way would be something that has the SVT type tone baked in. Like a VT Bass, Catalinbread SFT or similar type pedal. Failing that, parametric EQ and maybe a very mild overdrive.
I don't need exact SVT tone and it kinda sounds like my SVT at my SVT settings as it sets now. I was and am still floored by how good it sounds and really love the amp. I should of just said I need a good over drive :)

Something I noticed with the beta bass. When you crank the low it kinda chokes out. Turn it back just a hair from maxed out if your dimeing it.

To echo Corey, VT pedal.

If I had a couple hundred bucks, I would buy a few Joyo pedals and run them through their paces. I'd snag all the character pedals, overdrives, fuzzes, and distortions. Sell whatever doesn't make the cut. ( or donate to the needy )

I fully support a V and an aluminum neck t40.

Morning gents!

Any tips on breaking ice with Jucifer? They pretty much chill in their trailer the entire time...
Offer weed or brew or both? Or coffee?

Talk to Ed about him drum set? Ask how the hell they run all of those cabs?

Amber was stand-offish when I played with them (over ten years ago) but I imagine she gets a lot of stupid, unwanted attention. Ed was cool, though.
Yeah, I imagine she probably does.

It is when several million motorists panic and don't know how to drive on a wet (damp?) road. That **** is scary. I've witnessed it in LA - it seems like common sense to slow down a little and take your time, but I guess it isn't.
Yeah, I don't get it. Basically, with rain, the general rule is to assume your breaks don't work very well.

Thought that was spring? What is giving you issues in the fall?
Not all allergies are plant related. Non-plant related ones can occur at any time of the year.

So the wife(just before she drifts off to sleep), mentions something vague about a 9/11 conspiracy video and "even though they are kooks, there's a solid point."
Now an hour later I've 5 tabs open sifting through stupid propaganda looking for plausible conspiracy theories.
The damn woman is meanwhile snoring her ass off.
I think I've been played and she's gonna be laughing at me tomorrow when I can't see straight.
Dammit I'm a sucker for this drivel.
You got had.

Happy birfsday!

Dooooom!

shag yeah, Dio.

Also, happy bursday @Janitor

unfortunately, the kooks have more than one very solid point.. too bad they are buried within alot of kookery.

but there are a number of things that are beyond "unanswered questions".

btw.. on strings: Im kinda surpised you all hate GHS so much. Ive used em for years on my Stingray and nothing matched the tone I got from it with them. Plus theyve lasted forever and the one time I had a bad string in a decade GHS sent me a whole new free pack. I havent tried them on a passive jazz yet, and I expect I wouldnt like them as much in that setting. Do all you non-GHS guys use passive basses?
See, one could do a great documentary about all the failed US policies in the middle east/southwest asia that were huge contributing factors in what led to the 9/11 attacks... but all the conspiracy poopie generally drowns any of that out with ridiculous ********.

Yeahave instrumental until one of us learns to play and sing at the same time. I would be even more nervous if I was singing.

Yup short scale. I'm thinking I'm gonna need like 120 to tune to C standard.

You can have dogs in bars?
Eli's Mile High here allows dogs.

after putting in a 16 hour work day i get home and my not so into dog supervision european gf informs me that my pit has run away, but she didn't actually run away she was off the leash and my gf just let her wonder off, because my dog was too distracted/slow to keep up with the walk pace, after two hours of searching around on foot and seeing a big brown rock on the side of the road that i assumed was my dog's lifeless corpse a neighbor tells me that some college kids picked her up and were watching her until they could return her, because they didn't want to take her to animal control, the tag on her is not registered to my number for some reason it's registered to my emergency vet hospital, if i don't get some sleep today i'm pretty sure i'm going to black out View attachment 476245
Dude... dump your girlfriend. There's no excuse for just letting your dog wander off like that.

I know, I'm being harsh, but it's ridiculous to me that someone can't do the most basic aspects of taking care of a dog for a single day.

It is an Ampeg. It's on older model before they put the towel bars on it. I have some newer speakers but there are some no name speakers in there and something is constantly farting out.

I'm running a Hartke HA5500 which is 500W. I had to stop using my Landmark 300 because I was afraid my cab would explode. Its only 300W but it has huuuuuuuuge low end.
How many weird no name speakers are in it? Could you just replace them with matches for the newer speakers?

I just don't want to end up with a turd. This is my 3rd or 4th one. I may seak out other cheap-ish big cabs. Something that costs what I could hope to get from my 8x10.
There are used Mesa Diesel cabs for about $400 sometimes, which isn't bad as far as big loud cabs go.

Boast post.

Brand new 2000s cab clone with JBL K140 speakers. Very articulative, really bright without having annoying top-end and super solid in low-end without being boomy and muddy. If only it wasn't bitch to move...
That's what I find with my 2000S cab, too. Authoritative in the lows without being muddy at all. Your picture does a great job of illustrating just how gigantic they are, though, lol.

So ill ask the folks in here since if I ask outside of here thing may go askew.
So I'm looking to get a overdriven ampeg sound out of the univox.
The breakup is ok but since it was made to be a PA i imagine they went to special circumstances to keep it as clean as possible.
The clean tone is great on the amp.
Im shooting for a QOTSA type tone with my Ric.
Yes I own a SVT, Yes I own a P bass, and no I don't want to run my svt like its needed to active the tone at ease.
Am i being difficult yet :)
Since no local venue will let me crank a svt and the univox is lighter then the aforementioned thats why I'm asking.
It will also be the live in amp at the machete jam space soon.
I think having the overdriven amp tone then a muff to kill things when need be is my new direction for tone in the stoner band.
Ive tried to run the rat into muff as my always on tone then a boost to fill space/sound bigger and its always lacking.
Thoughts?
I've always found my muff pretty useless for just regular playing. Only really has a tone that doesn't get lost when I use my wah pedal, too.

As for the Univox... what kind of circuit is it?

Sale on lard and bacon at the Mexican meat market woop woop.

Also found a gigantic bundle of Christmas lights, time to deck the halls. Or just one wall completely covered.

How do you guys practice covers solo? Headphones or crank up a stereo?
I just don't plug in, and set the music so that it's the right volume for me to play unplugged to.

Pretty much the same for me.
If I'm obsessing over somebody's tone(like I am now over Om Rays of the sun to the shrinebuilder) I'll put headphones in one ear and play along and fiddle.

Wasn't he using a DS-1? That's my favorite piece by them as well.

headphones with garage band as my amp and iTunes playing the song I'm learning.

Well crapple I don't got an apple.

I have a practice amp with headphone and aux input, but it stupidly drops the aux input volume when you play so you can't hear it over yourself.

Just got an old speaker setup of mine back in my possession that's insanely loud and bassy, I am hoping that will allow me to learn them and use more volume. I have a really hard time hearing basslines at low volumes.

Edit: got a first gen iPad, and the Garage band app I've never really utilized. I guess if I got the little 1/4 to iPad plug I could do similar maybe. I'm not very familiar with it.

I was running a line 6 UX2 through my computer and finding songs on YouTube. Usually I dissect note by note until I have about 30 seconds or so of the song.

Now my 1/4" phones are broken. I haven't did that in a long time. I also have an old Marshall battery amp. Think I'm going to get an adapter so I can play at home and not eat batteries. Need to get new phones too. Good phone will be better than the 3" speaker.

thank you for all the dog concern, as far as character pedals, the dark driving by fuzzrocious does a really convincing sunn 2000s tubey od tone with the mesa, so much so in fact that i am now torn between it and the rat tail for my favorite pedal
I've been eyeing the DD and the beta drive. Might try to slam the front end with the nuke boost. Speaking of Mr. Dunwich sent him a quick message to make sure I had this hooked up right
