Stoner/Doom Bassists Thread, Part 90: Maxed Out

So let me say this...I've only ever used an 810 in a DOOM situation once before and the cab was on the other side of the stage so I never really heard it well enough. So when I first plugged in and riffed a bit it wasnt exactly what I was expecting. It does that low mid pummel exactly like I thought, dark and very round sounding. What I was surprised with was the volume output, I was expecting a lot more, especially having more than twice the speaker area as most of my other cabs, but my idea of a loud cab might be a bit skewed because my other cabs could be equally or more loud than an 810. The EVM 215 is probably a bit louder but some of that could be perception because of the mid range differences of the two cabs. It's definitely a way different style of cab than I've used thus far.

Also I noticed between my high output P bass and my low output ric, there is some high roll off with the hotter pickup, is that a normal thing?

Physical condition wise, the rat fur covering is more like a carpet and it isn't as bad as I was lead to believe. The grill is uglier in person and will probably be burned. All speakers work fine but 3 of them have been ripped/damaged and ghetto fixed.

Two piece wise, where I'm not competing with a guitarist, the cab sounds great and is definitely a better suited cab than the EVM 215. The real test will be with the whole VEGA mix, but I'm thinking the results will be similar.

So fugly...but once I get a new 18 for the folded 18, tres fridges amigos.

EVMs are really, really loud. Just saying. I'd put my EV 15B equipped 2000S cab up against an 810 for pure volume.

And yeah, it's normal for higher output pickups to have more high end roll off. Even without the bass cutting capacitor on the bridge pickup, 60s and 70s Rickenbackers are a little brighter than today's for that reason. Some people prefer that, some don't.

Prop 65 at its finest.

Yeah, it could be the solder, could be any number of things really.

As an example there are products that contain items that must be labeled similarly, but actually pose less risk than breathing the air in LA.
While I'm generally for such things, I think it's silly to say "this contains SOMETHING that could be bad for you." Why not have them label specifically what that something is? Like instead of a vague "chemicals known to cause blah blah blah," say "contains freon" or whatever the chemical is.

With food, we don't go "this contains things SOMETHING that might cause allergies." We go "this product contains peanuts."

It is truly ridiculous. I work in regulatory, and I am all for regulations protecting consumers. My stance is even considered radically conservative by most of my colleagues. Even I think Prop 65 is overstepping its bounds.
I don't think it's ridiculous, just poorly worded. I'm generally for regulations. But that's the problem with the proposition system. Propositions can be well-meaning but poorly worded.

Welcome to California, where people wants there to be signs on everything telling you about some academic fact that will never in reality be a danger to you, but nobody seems to care about the severe drought or any of the other immediate threats to our health and safety. We put a sign up on this cupcake shop that something in it might give you cancer though (if you smash open the back of the fridge and huff the fumes or start eating the insulation), so everyone can sleep soundly tonight.
I dunno, I've been at lots of restaurants lately that won't give you water unless you ask for it.

Damn so the dude 86ed himself? Or did he survive? I can only imagine how traumatic that must be for you and the witness.

810 dirty and 215 clean is how I'll be running my rig. 4 pro into the 810 and my Eden 550 into the 215 maybe with another 2 115s for a nice clean and tight lowend.
I'd actually go the opposite, if I was running a stereo rig. 810 for big clean sound, 215 for nasty ganky overdriven midrange.

Nature of my job I've seen stuff like that before. It was shocking that it happened. S***** that he did it in front of someone. But it wasn't surprising. I'm just glad he didn't take anyone with him. Or do it in front of any of the neighbors kids. He didn't make it though. Put a bullet in each lung. That's a hard way to go. Not quick or painless.
Whoa. Each lung?

Sounds like he felt he really needed to suffer as he died. Maybe some sort of self-hate/guilt thing.

The new Corpse f-ing rips!

Meh.

Oh holy poopie. At least the OP is on the ball.

Why Talkbass? Why?!!

(edit)

I'm even more disappointed now. I was reading along the first few posts, and things seems almost reasonable. Then **BLAM SMASH BOOM** Trainwreck!
I didn't read that far. Bunch of homophobes saying horrible poopie about gay people?

Yeah, I should have known better than to have read past the first few posts haha.
I didn't read past the first post.

I think @mc_muench should drop some Peavey Kvlt pix in there for the hell of it.
That would be amazing.

I saw this thread minutes after it was posted and I thought to myself, "You should post here. For the sake of your gay best friend and the forward progress of humanity, you should post a comment." Then I thought about your exact sentiment and I figured I would just dodge the bullet and continue to be an upstanding, equal rights supporting bassist without the need for internet moral (self) validation.

Maybe we should ALL just hijack the thread with rig pictures. No text, just a photobomb of DOOM rigs.
We should, if it gets reopened.

I read through 3 or 4 pages after I let it stew for a while. I became supremely disappointed in the TB community and became extra grateful of the level of involvement I have carved into the S/D community. You guys rule, those dudes suck. And I have also gathered a list of people I would probably tell to pound salt if they responded to a classified ad.
Share your list with me, so I know who to tell to shag off if I ever sell anything on here?

Well I'm reading that whole wedding thread as it's hilarious.

There's several dudes who seem to think the weddings in question will just be a sea of dudes in pre orgy mode... Instead of you know people at a wedding.

It's weird how some of the incredibly anti gay create the most grandiose overly sexual ideas in there totally not gay heads and assume their fantasy is a reality of being gay.
Gay weddings are pretty much exactly like any other weddings. Lesbian weddings are the best weddings, because of maximum cuteness.

And yeah, a lot of homophobes seem to have this really far out idea of what LGBT folks are actually like. It's weird and creepy.

I saw that thread as a good opportunity to share Chris Kluwe's letter from a couple years ago. I'm sure that will go over well.
Chris Kluwe's letter?

I also enjoyed the people who were *trying* to make a justifiable argument that playing a gay wedding would somehow brand them as supporters of homosexuality. I don't understand this argument as I have a feeling 99% of the people that would be attending the wedding and thus compromising their audience are probably supporters of homosexual rights. Also I doubt many people who they might lose potential gigs from would be in attendance at a gay wedding.
My guitarist in my folk/rock band is straight edge and vegan.

We often play at bars.

Sometimes at pubs.

Probably not a bad idea. She'll hate you soon... :p
Maybe, maybe not. Seems more like girls hate their mothers during their teenage years moreso.

Funny enough she was really happy hanging with us at the Oakland studio... Issue there is no bathroom. Will debate this till it's time to go.
Lol, is it Rehearse America? The bathroom there was broken for a while. The toilet wouldn't flush. It was gross.

Gator dude is a cray cray hater
Gator dude?

No it's not Rehearse America... Used to have a studio there it was nice then. Was way better than the Paradump.
I didn't use the bathroom there much though.
We don't pay rent so can't complain. The drummers other band plays there mostly.
Our singer didn't miss stepping in the human feces last Saturday. Forking gross.

Dude... that sounds like the place is a dump. We share our space with three other bands, but now that seems kinda luxurious.

@Sartori read the thread. All will be made clear. Gator dude is at the top of the list. Thanks for the cab tip. I'll try that first. Any tips for aby setups/buffered box/phase issues with a 810 215 rig?
If you're running separate signals to each, I wouldn't think it would be too much of an issue. Depends on the models of everything used, though, obviously. Phase issues crop up a bit more in running two cabs off the same amp than when running a true stereo rig. I'd advise the 810 for clean partly because unless you're running a TL606 cab, means it'll be louder. Also 810s, if they're geared toward an Ampeg type sound, are often designed to be "tight" sounding, which may be what you want for the clean rig, so that it's very punchy. This is just going on what my first instinct would be to do, though.

Where exactly, might I ask, did you get this pedal? When I was in my recent fuzz quest, the TFR was one of the top prospects. How's this compare? I might just have to pick one up...
I never owned a TFR but wanted one. The only other Green clone I owned was the GGG Green Russian Clone that I really loved and this sounds 99% like the GGG Green Russian to me. I also play guitar and love the older Black Keys albums and this pedal is Black Keys in a box on guitar and plays so nice with bass too. It's not the Chicago one dcarwin, but I thought about getting that one too. I believe this is just a guy building clones. His ebay store name is ralph-campbell
Here is the ebay link to his Green Russian. Buy it now is $85 but I just put a bid in for $65 and won it.

Morning fellas - got the old "FINAL ATTEMPT TO DELIVER FAILED" note on my door when I got home last night. Sons of bitches. It's the correct PCB for the blender pedal I'm going to build. I'll have to go to the post office tomorrow to pick it up. Leftover student loan money check came last night, so I'm resisting the urge to spend some of it on something frivolous.

Happy Friday!

I vote use a little for frivolous and save or use the rest for real world boring stuff, then you have a bit of fun and are responsible at the same time.

So I picked up an OCD on my way to practice last night. I couldn't get it to sound like that video I found but I could get some decent tones when I used it with my BDDI. I guess I'll never find a one pedal solution. I've tried building stuff but there is something about the tone I like (and can get with some combinations of pedals) that I have been unable to replicate in one box. Oh well. The search continues...

On mildly related note I have a Muff pcb and a Red Llama pcb that I was thinking of putting in the same box. I haven't decided on if they'll be in series or parallel yet.

Can you guys think of a pedal that is a fuzz and overdrive in parallel?

The only one I can come up with is the Pigtronix Disnortion.

I think it would be cool to experiment with them in parallel. I could turn the gain down on one of the sides to get a clean-ish blend. Maybe I could eq each side different enough to get different tones based on the mix between the overdrive channel and the fuzz channel. I love brainstorming about gear!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Probably what I'll end up doing. I did just get a new laptop two weeks ago - I'm using it for school but I plan to get some DAW software and use it for recording as well, so it's not totally a school expense.

My wife and I have been wanting to take a real vacation somewhere together but haven't been able to for a couple of years. I'll probably put the extra cash in the savings account and use it for that.

Coffee. Payday. Good start. Jamming to the Flaming Lips' cover of Dark Side of the Moon.

I sold my Boss RE-20 on Reverb, got a good price for it ($200!), and shipped it through my office mail dept...which forgot to put tracking on it! I had a twinge of nervousness b/c I was left open to buyer misbehavior but dude was cool and gave me the "arrived in good shape" notification last night. Whew!

Don't forget to bring birth control! My last vacation with my wife is gonna be the last for a long time.
The fun from that vacation is in preschool now. Just sayin'.

Good call, I am finally going on my first real vacation this November.

Don't know if yall are into video games. I try to say it like a redneck. Vid-e-rrs. "Damn kids and their videers."
Anyway. I downloaded Etrian Odyssey 4 on my 3DS. Pretty cool game so far. I've only played it for a few hours. Never really played a dungeon crawler style game before.
