Thunderbird Club

Just made set-lists for tomorrows (J1) The Sean Conneries show and now will spend a couple hrs rehearsing them. 24 songs, 5 originals by our Paul, 3 instrumentals (one being his), 4 new songs played for the 1st time live (3 of them French Ye-Ye songs from the late '60s), and our 1st show with new drummer Zach. Later, dinner at a friends house followed by charades. (~) oh well, it'll be... fun? :)

Great set list, I don't think I've ever heard anyone cover '2000 Light Years From Home' before. 'Fire in the Hole', love that tune. Used to do 'Bulldog', love McCartney's bass lines. Hey, you need a bass player?

Similarly I grew up listening to James Jamerson, Carol Kaye, Duck Dunn et al without knowing who they were, but recognizing how cool those bass lines were. It’s not until the last decade or so that I got many opportunities to play any of that music. I’m in a Motown/R&B band now and it’s so much fun!

I'm jealous, I've always wanted to play that stuff in a band, I don't think anyone really knew who they were when they were really active. I include Paul McCartney in that list except we all knew who he was, he inspired me to play bass, I loved the sound of the bass, his bass at least for me was probably the first bassist whose bass really stood out, it was louder than just about anyone else's back then, although Motown bass was mixed up pretty loud too along with that high pitched kick drum..

Near the end, Jaco had sort of a death wish and did dangerous things, one of which lead to his death from a nightclub bouncer. It's a truly sad story and even the people he offended were crushed hearing the news.

Although Pablo Picasso was "never called ässhöle" according to the Modern Lovers in 1976... he was to a certain extent. He carried a revolver loaded with blanks which he used to shoot at people who asked about the meaning behind his paintings. (1958) Ego-issues anyone?

Jaco was an end stage alcoholic and coke addict in addition to having bipolar illness.

Mel Schacher is great an an influence. Listen to Peter Cetera's playing, especially early on. He's hardly mentioned as an amazing player but is likely as good as good can be. And to be able to sing (not that stuff Scott's roadie does:laugh:) on top of playing.

Love Schacher and Peter Cetera, he's one of the fastest pick style players I've ever heard, great sound and very tasteful lines in addition to singing at the same time, I'm surprised more bassists don't recognize how good he is/was too. (I don't think he's playing much bass these days although he did start playing again).

Yeah, local band Hunters & Collectors were 8 piece. In an interview that was brought up as having been an issue for them. They lasted nearly 20 years though, with an occasional reunion.
One of their hits you may have heard is “Throw My Arms Round You” ?

It has been covered by lots of people but most successfully (imo) by Crowed House. The singer of Hunters younger brother is the bassist in the Crowdies. My wild guess was they were helping out by recording it to give him some more royalties, it’s not like Neil Finn needs help finding a song. Complete guess by me, it is a good song so maybe it was that simple.

Nothing irritates me more than a YouTube video that takes 17 seconds to start.

They’re baaaaaaack

I turned the sound off after ten seconds. Still enjoyed the vid…

You made me listen, you made it 5 seconds more than I did. I did and still really like SOS though and that's probably the only one by them I really like. There's something about this song that I love, maybe it's the classical piano intro and the synthesizer, it was a really well written and performed song. It has a haunting quality to it.
