I did. Squier Jaguar VM SS. Neck profile hurt my fretting hand. Added ashtray and custom made thumbrest. Kept it as a backup 'til I bought an '09 Epi EB-0.(bridge pup on Jag totally useless)

Yep, I have the exact same bass with the exact same problem, bridge pickup with absolutely no balls! The split p sounded good, but the Jazz pup brought nothing to the mix. It’s in my pile of basses to off at Guitar Center next time I go down that way. I’ll probably get enough for it to buy a couple sets of strings.

Why is the Allparts neck a temporary fix if it plays well and sounds great?

I much prefer rosewood or ebony fingerboards. And it’s not exactly all that stable a neck. It has been lately.
And it’s also very sensitive as to what strings I put on.

Lovin my DBird (not as fond of the DRoc look) I’ll probably spring for a 6 way switch upgrade for something more intuitive and useful to me. Thinking - bridge, middle, neck, bridge/middle, middle/neck, all three. That should give me a nice combo of single coil and humbucker sounds.

I just saw this from SD - maybe it would work for your D-bird?

Quoting myself because i forgot to mention: but this 1975 Gibson grabber came with its original, & very tolex worn, hardcase with purple plush interior (which still looks great considering its age). All this for 200$ CAD, what a deal i got indeed (even though i'm investing about 450$ total in its fix - since the truss rod tool is costly). Still lucked out, i'm glad the electronics work, i can keep those original pots, & the pickup has a nice midrange growl to it. Definitely the Gibson Pbass with a twist, Love it!

For a total of $650 CAD after all is said and done? Still a great deal.

I tested one at GC for a few minutes(not long enuff as it turned out)and thought it would be OK as a backup/tight spaces bass. It sounded better than I expected. In fact, if I'd really liked it, I thought about reversing the P pup positioning. Glad I didn't invest the time/effort/cash in that mod. My fret hand is just too used to Gibson/Epi necks to play anything else for any length of time.

I listened first half on VP, then CP then all on IV, then 2nd half on VP then CP.

Firstly, I’d be happy with all of them. Not sure if we are comparing the pickups or the strings but I think the IV with tapes comes 3rd for me.
Less sure on the other two. But I have the CP winning, nice and even all the way through where there was something I wasn’t 100% sold on the VP - particularly in the first third of the song.

I’ve really come to like the standard Epi IV pickups with stainless rounds. I think those pickups need them to keep from being too dull and dark.

So long as you intonate with the 7th fret….

This is what they look like now after dialing in the intonation. The Peterson strob tuners are perfect for this task.
Intonation is dead on now.

There is a pickup hack thread for those basses showing how to add a magnet. I’d find it for you, but The TB search tool and I aren’t friends. The hack is said to work well.

I came close to getting one of those before 7ender came out with the MIM Mustang. I played one in each color through an Ampeg combo. They sounded decent with the P pickup only. This was at the Sam Ash store in Cerritos on Artesia. I went there for the specific purpose of buying one. The fretwork on all three was awful and soured me on getting one. They were cheap though, $229 IIRC.

How are the frets on yours? If they’re ok, I could be persuaded to take it off your hands…let me know and I’ll bring some extra cash to the GTG.

I have a red jag SS (- well technically it belongs to my daughter). Its actually very nice, except for the neck dive.
It needs lightweight tuners.
