I can remember replacing the AM radio in my 1965 mustang with a Blaupunkt AM/FM Cassette player and replacing the stock rear window deck speaker with a pair of Jensen 6x9 coaxial speakers. IIRC I also installed an audiovox power booster with a whopping 20watts of power.
That was 1976 and the first two cassette tapes I bought for the new stereo were the Eagles Greatest Hits, and Boston. Both were great albums when they first came out. I didn’t know anybody that didn’t have them on LP or cassette. Both eventually got over played on the radio.
I can recall cranking the volume up on the Boston track Foreplay/Longtime to ear bleed levels while cruising with a carload of friends and drinking 100 proof Yukon Jack (which was also used to fill the bong that was being passed around). How I survived and didn’t kill anyone else along the way is a miracle. Chalk it up to appallingly stupid things we did as kids.
I’ve got a lot of the vinyl. I suspect none have been played in twenty years or so.

LOL - I think everybody had that LP except me. Liked Frampton at the time but I never bought any of his albums for some reason.
At the time (1976/77ish) I was a pretty casual music listener. I was quite a bit more focused on illicit libation, girls and cars. My total LP and cassette collection back then was pretty small and diverse

What was the first CD you bought? And why?
Mine was Pink Floyd - DSOTM
I already had two DSOTM LPs that were wearing out and a cassette that was starting to suffer from flutter. CD media at the time was marketed as far superior in sound quality to LP or cassette tapes and nearly indestructible. I found the DSOTM CD to be much more hifi than my LPs, but probably mostly due to the wear and tear the LPs suffered from years of abuse.
CD purchases that quickly followed were:
Genesis- Abacab
Lionel Richie - Dancing on the Ceiling
Queen - Greatest Hits
Grover Washington - Limelight
Glenn Miller - In the Digital Mood
Steely Dan - Aja

Probably Midnight Oil’s Diesel and Dust. Why? I probably read about it in the now defunct Musician magazine. I almost certainly bought it at the Yokosuka Naval Base exchange. I was stationed in Japan from Apr 82 to Apr 91. While the exchange had a reasonable selection of trending current records/cassettes and then CDs, Japanese record stores had stuff that was either special order or unavailable in the US such as the entire Meters discography, the Ventures, bootleg Little Feat concert recordings, etc; I spent a lot more time and money there buying vinyl then getting CDs until 89 or so. Then we shifted to CD almost entirely.

Not likely. Although as albums, I actually prefer CSN to Deja Vu. It’s shocking to me as well. The vocal harmonies on Helplessly Hoping and 49 Bye-Byes are too good to be denied.Don't for

First Cd player didn’t come along for me until Christmas of ‘87. I was still buying vinyl up to that point. First CD was 10,000 Maniacs’ In My Tribe which has one of my favorite songs ever on it; Hey Jack Kerouac. I still spin it regularly.
A lot of my early CD purchases were of the albums that my vinyl copies were pretty worn out: Ziggy Stardust, They Yes Album and Close to The Edge, Meet The Beatles and Revolver, After the Gold Rush and Rust Never Sleeps are a few of the ones I recall buying immediately after getting the player for Christmas.
I still have that Sony Carousel CD player, but discs skip when I try to use it, so now I play CD’s through a Blu Ray player.
Both are great albums.

The Ventures were more popular in Japan than here during the time you were there. I’ve never been to Japan, but I bought my share of Japanese imports. Better quality vinyl pressings than what we were getting here.
Yep, I had that Maniac CD as well, played it a bunch. Also followed Natalie Merchant for a bit when she left. Tiger Lilly was a good album as well if you like her voice.
