Thunderbird Club

Today is the day. In about 3 hours I will be having my left shoulder repaired!

Right shoulder repair is likely to wait until late summer to allow full recovery of the left.
Just getting to your 6AM post, but hope all goes well and you have a thorough recovery. Just don't do anything stupid with watermelons until clearly by the psychiatrist I mean surgeon.

I think you mentioned that you have an Eppi VP. That's a fine bass and unlike many basses it takes to many different types of strings quite nicely. I'd recommend staying with a standard gauge unless you go Tapewound, in which case you can go with a light gauge so you don't have to refile the nut.

Of the standard gauge strings on the VP I've had very good luck with Ernie Ball Cobalt Flats, Fender 7150 rounds and DR Silver Star or Black Beauties. La Bella Black Tapewounds are an interesting treat and offer an ultra smooth easy to play feel. They might be one of the best strings for a beginner because they are so forgiving on improper left hand technique. Stainless steel rounds will be the least forgiving string but will force you to improve your fretting technique to get some very nice sounds. I personally like the Fender 7150 rounds and Cobalt flats best on the VP.

You and me both. I wonder if those that have experienced otherwise got a defective set.

thanks for the reply. I’m waiting for delivery of a Epi Blackbird. I was going to pit fresh strings on it, hence asking about strings. I ordered medium ones below and some tools to do proper set-up if needed.

I think he uses steel rounds....these seem pricey...Rotosound RS66s should fit the bill...

I'm not sure those are still available, which might explain the high prices. I had a set once and liked them well enough that I would buy them again at the right price.

I use both DR Black Beauties or HighBeams and Ken Smith Burners or Rock Masters. I think I prefer the Burners over the Rock Masters, but that can always change. I can usually find the DR's in stock at Guitar Center, but the Smith strings I have to order online.

The PB NR is home! The very pleasant seller shipped it by Fed Ex. Took almost exactly 72 hours to get from Austin to Cali. He packed the as new case in the original Gibson shipping box. He included the TR tool, the little owner’s manual, the product card and an extra set of new strings. I’m having no issues with the bird. It’s in very good condition, everything works, and if the 7th fret is loose (can’t really tell), I’ll deal with it. The FB is nice and dark. The neck is straight. Action is low and it sounds great. It has a Corian nut; a first for me. It is noticeably heavier than my ‘15, but not overly so. I’m happy to have it.

Did anyone try the Nikki Sixx strings? Looks like the whole Helix line was discontinued. Anyone got the skinny on that?

Congrats! She's a real looker.

Thank you everyone for the well wishes. I have spent the day snoozing and having bizarre narcotic fueled dreams. So of course now I can't sleep. I head home in the morning.

I won't be able to play for at least 6 weeks. So I will have to find something else to do. Current contenders are transcribing songs I want to learn and development of other fruit related garments.
