I sense that you really want to get serious about fretless. If I'm correct, and that Pedulla is as clean and solid mechanically / electronically as it looks in the picture, that is a STEAL for that axe. The PentaBuzz is one of the best-known choices for serious fretless players, and Mike Pedulla has been building them for a long time in small numbers.

I can not think of a better bass to learn and then keep as your #1 fretless, plus at that price, keep it in primo shape and you'll never lose money on it, always an important factor. They are a relatively small bass, but if the size and neck feel right for you, it's all good.

It's far easier to find another Ric than it would be to find that bass at that price again. There's always a handful of them in circulation in the web marketplace, but never for that price.

He also toured with Jeff Beck. One of my all time favorite players, really great glissando technique too.

As someone who didn't even own a fretted bass for over thirty years until quite recently, I think you can guess how I voted.

Life is short. Yes, that's glib, but it's true.

The first "good" bass I owned was a Pedulla, and I loved it. Only reason I sold it was cuz I needed money to upgrade to a 5-string (couldn't afford more than one bass at the time). The Pedulla was one of the most playable, best-sounding basses I've ever owned.

You have a tough choice Dr . - Do you go with the Ric where you feel at home and comfortable or do you go for the fretless challenge of the Pedulla and see if you can stretch yourself musically ? It sounds like the Pedulla is an especially fine instrument to learn fretless on and at that price you will have no trouble getting your money back should you decide it isn't right for you . So which is it - present yourself a real fretless challenge or stay in your Ric comfort zone ? Immediate happiness [ Ric } or potential accomplishment [Pedulla ] ? which means more in the long run only you can decide ..... Kelly

I'm assuming you're comfortable with both 5-string and fretless so you don't make my mistake. I tried to learn fretless on a 5-string after playing only 4-strings and nearly made myself loopy. Wound up trading the 5 and swearing that I would never again play any instrument with more than 4 strings. After that, my fretless education went fine and that's my bass of choice today. Good luck.
