    Goth: Share Your Faves

It's not clear to me if it's Robert Smith or Simon Gallup on the Bass VI, but if you're looking for a goth mood, you'll find it here in this 28-minute Cure instrumental B-side (?) that was originally intended/used as a soundtrack to a film made by Simon's brother Ric Gallup. IMO, more black...

80s Albums Many of Us Have Never Heard But Are Worth Checking Out

I wish he had been a bit more prolific, because he's a personal fave of mine. His style was so distinctive. Here's someone doing a pretty darn good cover of "Garlands" (the song). "Funk Gets Stronger (Killer Millimeter Longer Version)" for me is one of those funk jams that just hits right...

Recommendations for a 'weird sounds only' board

From the "noise" part of the spectrum, you have most of the pedals from: MASF (Raptio, Possessed) Lastgasp Art Laboratories (Sick Pitch King Jr, Sandstorm) ezhi&aka (Polarized Flutter + Echo) Pladask Elektrisk (Gjengangar) and for (sometimes marginally) more tameable/subtle sounds there's...

Let's talk weirdo pedals - Red Panda, Chase Bliss, Meris, Montreal Assembly, Bananana, Pladask, ...

I had an OG Generation Loss for a while, it was definitely fun. Using it on bass didn't feel out-of-place to me. I don't have firsthand experience with it, but the Demedash T-120 DLX v2 seems to cover alot of the same sonic territory at a sliiiightly more palatable price point, and with a...

If you could go back and see one gig, what would it be?

Number one would be a show I never saw - the Sex Pistols at the Manchester Lesser Free Trade Hall, June 4, 1976. Supposedly only about 40 people saw the show, but an unusual number of the people who did see the show went on to be very influential in their own right. Number two is a show that I...

Leak? Fender / Squier Meteora Bass

Hoo boy that blue... I'm on record as someone with a "SHUT UP AND TAKE MY MONEY" position on an official Fender Meteora bass, but I can't help but wonder if they're going to suffer from neck dive.

Two basses- can only get one..

Thread derail, but genuinely curious - have you (or anyone else reading this) actually tried to replicate the Caprice tone with what I'm assuming is the PMVC4 FE/M2-JMVC4 FE/M2 combo? Or tried to replicate the Caprice tone otherwise? Asking because getting the Caprice tone in a different...

guitars that you wish were basses (because they look cool)

Another vote for a Fender Meteora bass here. I suspect it would take some finagling to make it balance okay and I personally would put a different headstock on it strictly for aesthetic reasons, but yeah. Shut up and take my money.

The bass you hardly play but love to look at..

I just couldn't get along with the playability of the Jag and the tone of either. Mainly because of the fact that the pickups for both could only be switched on or off in various combinations and alignments and it turns out I like to be able to control the volume/blend. I know the Big Al in...

Let's talk weirdo pedals - Red Panda, Chase Bliss, Meris, Montreal Assembly, Bananana, Pladask, ...

Not too extreme, but definitely mildly weird. It's a one-trick-pony, a Lastgasp Art Laboratories FLIKRRR. It tremolos in the manner of a flickering candle or a wonky light bulb and...that's it. It's not responsive to playing dynamics as far as I can tell - it just...wobbles. I have no idea...

Bit crushers, which is your favorite?

Yeah I loved mine, but I didn't love it so much that it felt right to have that much $$$ wrapped up in a (extremely well executed) one-trick-pony pedal. The "Telephone" knob does cry out to me from across the universe sometimes though... FWIW, I plan on getting a FrantaBit if/when they reappear!

Web Fulla Weird: Oddball Basses found online

One step closer was all I needed! Looks like it's a luthier by the name of Mauricio (Mauro) Vos (Link Removed), building out of Santiago, Chile. Judging from his Instagram (@vosguitars) it looks like he mostly builds guitars, but there's a solid bass representation in his work. Scroll down his...

Web Fulla Weird: Oddball Basses found online

Thanks! I absolutely agree it looks like something in his style. The thing is, of the few fretless basses I've found of his, I don't see any of them executed with that bridge design, he rarely seems to use contrasting wood knobs, and using only a piezo pickup seems even rarer. So if it's his...
