Hello Everyone,

I have been playing the bass off and on (more off) for about 26 years. I can not read a lick of music, which I found is not a requirement anyway. But now I am in the process of trying to learn just what it is I am playing.

So I am hoping that I can find some useful techniques to get me going.

I have a carlo robelli USB 5 string. I love it :)

I've been playing bass for about 2 years (guitar for 3), but it was on someone else's bass (it was at school, no idea whose it was :D ) I bought a bass of my own a couple months ago and I'm jammin away

Nothing wrong with being a guitarist, or an exguitarist, there are a lot of both types here. But it's nice to know that you finally realized that bass rules.:D

Hi all !

I'm Lionel, I play bass for now 15 years ...my current gear is a Warwick thumb bass 6 strings, a JP basses Zia 6 strings, a musicman Stingray 4 strings, a Fender/Warmoth Jazzbass 4 strings and an EUB Ampeg Baby bass ('64)...and a Hartke ha3500 with a 410 xl cab with a Dbx 266 xl compressor...

I love Jazz, funk latin grooves etc...

Now you know all about me:D ;)

Hi. I'm Tom.

I started playing violin when I was 4. I took other music lessons, including theory and piano. When I was in my early teens, I taught myself guitar by learning all the bass lines to all my Beatles records by ear. So when I was in high school, and talking with the director of my HS jazz band, and he was complaining about all the bass players he was auditioning (he said "the ones that can play can't read, and the ones that can read can't play), I said "Well, I can read a little bass clef, and I know all the Beatles bass lines."

I got the gig. And I played bass intermittently after that until I went to NYC and met a lot of singer songwriters down in Greenwich Village in the early/mid 1980s, and there was one bass player they all used and he couldn't be everywhere at once. So I started getting calls. And I've been playing steadily ever since. I've been very lucky in my small career.

I have a Spector NS2000/4, a MIM Jazz, a Fender Jazz Special fretless with EMG PJ pups, a Jay Turser Hofner knockoff, and my very first bass, a P-bass body with a J neck (ESP parts) with passive PJ and a coil tap. I just bought an NS2000/5 off eBay - and if it doesn't work for me, I'm trading for a Lakland 55-01.

My rig for the past bunch of years has been a 1988 GK800RB and an 1992 or so Eden 2x10. I just bought an Ashdown ABM C115 500 combo.

I'm also a home recording enthusiast, and am a moderator over at VS-Planet, the website for Roland virtual studio users.

I used to play, trumpet, baritone and tuba in high school. Now I am in the Navy and I just played when I could. I really want to get back to my bass, but I want to learn how to read this time. I am debating on teaching myself of taking lessons from a professional. Any suggestions?

Best idea is to get a teacher, and make sure that the teacher knows theory and is a good reader himself(or herself).

Maybe not even a bass player. Piano teachers usually have formidable reading chops, and great understanding of theory.

I don't have the time for lessons, so I am learning on my own, doing exercises from online sites, and playing along with my son. He is taking trombone, and the trombone method books are excellent resources for learning to read bass clef.

I think I will start looking for an instructor. It is probably a safe bet to say that if I haven't learned it on my own by now, that I probably would slack in trying to teach myself.

Anyhow, i'm a moderator at guitar.com and i'm keeping tabs on a pestiferous user that posts here too. He's been the cause of many a headache.
