Stoner/Doom Bassists Thread, Part 90: Maxed Out

QUOTE="Kawai-chang, post: 16098814, member: 47516"]Wait, wait wait..you can't have a previous reincarnation! Previous incarnation, yes, but not previous REincarnation. You almost made my inner grammar Nazi poop himself

Technically yes, but following that logic, it would be a rerererererererererererererererererererereincarnation, ad infinitum. That would make very tedious and repetitive typing.

Had to rewire it twice first time I just had a cold solder point or something but I got it singing now.

Number of knobs, it really depends on what they control and how simple it is to understand what they to me. But generally no matter what, the bigger they are the better.

Also I need some opinions...

Kickstarter, how do y'all feel about using it? My guitarist wants to start one up to pay for vinyl. I really don't have anything against crowd sourcing, its a useful tool for some, I just don't want to do it. I'd rather not involve a website/company like that and do a simple preorder we handle ourselves. You give us money, we put you on list, when the vinyl is ready, preorders get it a bit early. Or even just pay everything outright and sell when we get them.

I think using kickstarter to crowd source your band's first full length release, vinyl or not, is a horrible idea and comes of to me as lazy. Don't take that personally, as I don't mean it to be offensive, but that's just how I feel.

Those are my feelings too. We got into a heated discussion about it yesterday at practice. I said I want nothing to do with that, we are more than capable of paying for it ourselves, yes its a lot of money and will make us close to broke for a little while but its well worth it to me if we don't beg for money to put out vinyl. If a few people want to do the preorder thing to ensure they get a copy, then by all means, give us some money via Paypal or actual cash, well get you a record when it comes out. I'm not expecting our small fan base to fund all or a large portion or really any of the costs, to me thats just plain stupid and if Iwas a fan I wouldn't pay you money through kickstarter for the record, id wait for it to actually be out.

That and the whole price levels of getting different stuff. Especially when bands have the, Your name will be put on our album, go fvck yourself, I don't want your name on MY album, what did you do for the album? Whether you gave us that grand or not the album will be out on vinyl. And why did you just give us a grand when the record will only be $20ish when it comes out anyway.

At the end of the day we wont be doing kickstarter, I'm happy.

I had a good experience using Kickstarter. My old band used it to generate > $3K which we used to close out debts related to recording, pressing, etc. We used the leftover funds to put on our CD release show (rent hall, sound, etc.), which was no cover and was very well attended - one of the best gigs I've even been a part of. We had good incentive packages for the various donation tiers. We also had a really good following going into the whole thing. So, in my one experience with KS, it was a positive. I think the trap other bands fall into is the "if you post it, they will come" attitude. It takes a lot of effort to run the whole thing properly. While I would say my one experience was successful, I wouldn't want to participate in it again.

For vinyl Especially I wouldn't do it. I mean to have a physical record is cool I'm sure, but it isn't really needed, nor about the music or getting it out there. Posting it pay as you go online and such is viable and accessible to more people.

But if the finances are available it's something to do.

But really "preorder", "advance", "loan", "kick starter" are all pretty much the same thing with slightly different connotations. In the end it's all a promise of a good or service in the future for a payment today. Many transactions are done that way, but what the transaction offers and the context make it what it is.

We did a pre-order for our vinyl but it wasn't to fund it, everything is already paid for. It was just a way to start selling the record sooner.

Yea if you already have the funds it changes things.

If you already had the funds just in case and used kickstarter as a way to gauge interest and have a centralized place to do it. That way you know you can still provide the product regardless, and if your lucky offset some or all of the cost.

If we did a pre order it wouldn't be to fund it, like I said we should have no problem paying to do vinyl. Honesty I'd foot the entire bill if I had too, I'm young, plenty of time to save up again, I live with my parents, don't have many bills, and work full time, I can take a hit like that and deal with it for a while, I WANT VINYL OF VEGA. I'm doing this mostly for myself, if people dig it and buy, sweet. So a kickstarter for this would be like a kickstarter to buy a car.

That's a good idea! Guys I want an 80cc gas powered bike. Everyone paypal me a $1

It doesn't have nearly as many controls (no internal pots either as far as I know), so I'm guessing it would be a lot easier to dial in. Every demo I've heard, it's sounded fantastic.
Which ones is it missing? For me, the filter knob just provided a different way to screw up the tone. The other controls were good to have, though (being able to go between a scooped, traditional fuzz sound, and a flat midrange fuzz sound was cool, though I think a switch might accomplish that well enough, for me, and being able to control the compression of the fuzz was cool, too).

For me it's usually the opposite. Not having enough controls often means not being able to get a sound I like.
It depends what the controls do, for me.

I've seen some active basses with treble, bass, and two mid controls, but no way to switch pickups. In essence, they have a bunch of controls I don't need, and lack one that I very much do need on a two pickup bass. It's also my main gripe with Jazz Basses. I don't need a shaging tone knob, but I would like a way to quickly switch between pickups.

On my big muff, most of the tone control's range sucks. There's a narrow band of good, for me.

Can't? Sounds like a challenge in need of answer.

I'm with you man. Folks need to loosen up, get it on and have fun doing it.
I only refer to individuals as tramps and ho's for one specific reason. I will however use it as generic in jest just like any other demographic-slur. Like a specific substitute for "they" or "them".
The one reason I'll use it for someone specific is to get the attention of someone I care about who is getting themselves in unsafe/dangerous circumstances in regards to sex. Kind of a tough-love insult.

The guitarist in a past band had a real problem with this. Great dude just terrible taste in women. He only ever dated women that would openly talk about being into BDSM. Wound up with some demented people a couple of times. I kept telling the dude that half the fun of a relationship was finding out the the other persons limits and fetishes. He was more of the "will they tie me up? good enough" type. Course lots of relationships fail cause the sex doesn't work so there's that too. I guess there will be heartbreak regardless.
True.

I know some folks who are way into BDSM. Of course, I know this because when you're friends with people, conversations eventually go towards sex and so you find out what people are into.

I agree it's more fun to find out what sort of weird things people are into gradually, but at the same time, you don't want to get too committed before finding out if there are basic compatibility issues. Someone could be really cool and hot, but it could turn out that they like something totally different from what you do, that you're not into at all. Sex isn't the most important thing in a relationship, and you shouldn't start one just because you're into the same kind of sex as the other person, but it is still an important thing.

What I kinda dislike about our society is that because of the way sexuality is in our culture, it's actually easier to discuss the possibility of being in a committed relationship with someone than it is to float the possibility of just shaging around a bit, despite that involving way less emotional investment. Things are messed up.

Yeah that took to long.
Multi-quoting ain't for me....
Ha ha

No shame here.
Although lazy would be more accurate.
Despite my dislike of multiquote the new TB website sure makes it easy.
In unrelated news my upper management at work won't accept my resignation and "needs to mediate my relationship with my immediate supervisor."
Sounds good in theory but I expect I'll get a half-assed excuse and things will resume in time.
Am annoyed.
I multi-quote because I used to just reply individually to everything, and so an entire page and a half of the thread would be just my responses to people. I try to always catch up, because people might be talking about cool, interesting things. And then I see posts I want to respond to, and yeah.

Lol, won't accept your resignation? That's dumb.

The thought occurred to me I could use this as leverage but I don't play games or ask for anything except respect.
If I am not offered a raise at the right time then that tells me something about them. Right now all I'm interested is trust. They trust I'm doing the job and stop acting paranoid and aggressive I'll probably see how it plays out.
Workplace politics shaging suck.

Work wouldn't be nearly so bad if people would just let you do your shaging job and not bring irrelevant ******** into it.

Homie climbed all over my ass early last week about a mislabeled (typo)picture submitted for work. Telling me to take my time and get it right.(valid but petty)
Friday i was asked by a different supervisor(lateral hierarchy) to work late and received several calls from direct supervisor asking what was taking so long ETA etc. Very aggro, very suspicious.
The last call had no tact or respect and left me quite flabbergasted, occured while I was doing the very thing he told me to take the time to get it right. "What's taking so long" etc. Practically yelling. I got pissed and submitted what was needed for billing and dumped the rest. Wrote HR and big boss an email.
Ugh. That complaint could have been worded in a non-petty way. Instead of going "take your time and get it right," just go "Oh, hey, it looks like there's a typo here." Everyone makes typos, no need to be petty about it. It's not about what you say, it's how you say it. There are respectful ways of saying things and disrespectful ways of saying the same things. If you want to have a professional relationship with someone, you use the respectful way of saying things. You can point out that there's an error without implying that someone isn't good at their job. shag's sake.

As for what's taking so long, maybe being constantly bothered by people instead of being allowed to do the damn work, lol.

knobs suck. mo knobs mo problems.
Sometimes, yeah. shag if I know why my wah pedal seems to think I need a level control on it, or why my reverb pedal thinks that not only a level control, but an EQ control is necessary. The several types of reverb control is nifty, and the duration control is needed, but what the shag do I need an EQ and a gain knob for? I don't want to change that poopie, I want it to be the same, but reverby. Same with the wah. I don't need a level control. I want it to be the same, but with wah.

theyre all bad. i remember i used to have an active bass, SVT 4pro, compressor, limiter, two giant EQs. probably in total about 35 knobs to twiddle with. at one point i didnt even know what was controlling my tone, felt like i was untangling a giant shoe knot every show.

the SVT has bass/treble/mid and a volume knob. 405 has bass/treble/mid/presence, and two volume knobs (and ive realized the master volume is nowhere near as sensitive as the gain knob on hiwatts). the bluebeard has tone/volume/fuzz. if you cant get the sound youre looking for with just a few knobs, time to get something else.
I prefer not having that many EQs. Hell, if the mid control on my amp's rotary controls wasn't essentially useless, I wouldn't even need the graphic. I need that gank. Need to make my tone obnoxious.

I've tried the 4pro, didn't like it. Too clean for my tastes. Even with the gain all the way up.

With my Big Muff, the problem is mainly with the tone control. It's all just a flavor of mid scoop, and so that's kind of annoying. I want a switch to turn it off when I'm not going to be using it with wah (since the wah is so mid-forward, they actually work pretty well together as is).

I listened to the whole album and there is more punk on it than metalcore. It is honestly one of the most creative albums I have ever heard.
Japan has some interesting stuff. Boris, Church of Misery, Sigh. Weird but good bands.

I'm with you on this - which is why I avoid the Sansamp-style amp sim pedals. I already have 3-band EQ on my bass, and 3-band EQ on my amp, not to mention EQ options on my dirt pedals. Adding another preamp stage with MORE EQ was just muddying things up and making it more difficult to get a tone that I like. Unplug the preamp pedal - instantly sounds much better.
I don't use the VT Bass pedal if I'm going to be using my actual amp. It's more of a backup so that if my amp goes out, I can get another amp to sound reasonably close in terms of drive. Or if I'm going to an open mic, or something like that. Or making a quick and dirty recording.

Depends on what the knobs do. If it's something like clipping type or a hard setting that I'm never going to change, I don't care. If it's a bunch of tweaky controls that are all interactive, I tend to shy away from gear like that. My GK has a lot of knobs, but they almost never move. For pedals I prefer minimal controls with a really specific sound, it means if I want a different sound I can just buy more pedals. Most of my pedals that have more than 3 knobs, I dial in a setting I like and pretty much never touch it. Same with amps, I tend to memorize my settings and every once in a while I have to move something to compensate for the room.

EDIT: Oh...and I'd be fine with a bass that has no knobs. Is it on? I'm good.
Yeah, very much my approach, too.

Though I do like having a volume knob on my bass. Or two, if it has two pickups (and then also a pickup switch).

ive been thinking about it, if i do youll be the first in line. its an awesome muff, just thought about trying something else.
What controls does it have?

This set my antennae a-quiverin'.

$1300? Jeez. How much do they cost new? Because that's mighty steep for a used 810.

I'm so far removed from this thread but but I see we're talking about knobs. As someone who day dreams about pedals all the time I have concluded that many knobs is a way to be everything to every one. Less knobs is more about fitting a specific niche. A pedal for me...1-3 knobs. A pedal for other people...1000 knobs.

Basses are so dynamic and different that you can't build one pedal for every kind of bass unless you include a knob for every parameter!!!!

The other issue that I see with stuff like Way Huge is that sooooooo many things in a circuit are adjustable. If you can make something variable then you can add functionality and broaden your user base but then you have to add an extra knob to your pedal. If you have the option for an adjustable parameter but don't include a knob then you're deciding what your customer will like and then you limit your user base.

This is why I usually hate most pedals because they were designed by a guitar player who has a cheap ****** beater bass in his closet.

So few designers understand bass frequencies and bass guitars well enough to cover all all the aspects of amplifying and distortion the signal. That's why you get 100 knobs when you might only need 2. Some other guy might need all 100 knobs to get the same sound.
That is true. And so many pedal demos just have guitar players, and they're playing all this lead-y stuff, and I'm like "oh my shaging gods, I don't need to hear what it sounds like when you noodle on the high strings."

I go back and forth as far as knobs. Partly because some are actually useful to me. Like on the Swollen Pickle, the sustain knob is good because I want it set almost to nothing, which is different from what most people who use it probably want, and the scoop and crunch controls are useful.

But then there's my Big Muff, which has only three controls, but only two of those perform any useful function. And my wah pedal, which has one, totally useless control.

I agree, the more knobs vs. less knobs is about design philosophy, and whether the product is intended to be versatile or specialized. If it's intended to do a whole lot of pretty cool things, or intended to do one thing only but do it really well.

And yeah, lots of pedals designed more for guitar do some really weird things in the low end on bass.

Man, that's what I do 8 hours a day. (actually it's more like 4 of that and 4 TB).
Anyway, 100 knobs itself is not a bad thing. The problem is when 45 of those do the same thing, just look at some alembics... A tone for each pickup, then a master tone, plus separate volumes, a master volume and a pup switch???
Alembics aren't for me. They're cool, but not for me. Too many knobs that do things I don't want done.

I do like having a pickup switch, though. My Rickenbacker has five controls including that, and that's about the right amount, for me.

I am thinking about posting some pedals for sale and wanted to give you guys first crack. Nothing that special but thought I would check if anyone was looking for:

MXR Bass Envelope
EHX BBM
EHX Micro POG
EHX Superego
What do Micro POG and the Superego do?

Do preorder, but not kickstarter.

Partly because with kickstarter, you need to make special things for different levels of funding, and that would turn into a hassle. Also, you might want to save crowd-funding for a later point where you might really need it.
