I'd keep it in the kitty and watch the trades for a good buy, fire sale or divorce. ... A vintage Fender pre-75 is a good buy and will be a good 'usable' investment. I'd get a couple of kick-around SX basses - a 4-string and a fretless 4-string - and a Bass Fly Rig, and save the rest.

I'd look for a nice used Highway 1 Jazz bass, and a used Classic 50's Precision bass. Best $1600 you could spend IMHO.

I recently was awarded a check for 2k. I'm looking to buy a new bass but I'm not sure what I want to get. I love stingrays,Fender basses of all kinds. And dingwall is cool I'm open to many other brands aswell. I currently own an American pro jazz bass in sonic blue. I really want somthing that is going to cut through a mix well and bring the thunder. I'm not sure if I should buy new or used. Vintage or modern. What would you do?

Not sure if you mean an actual "vintage" instrument or vintage vibe/sound. Modern as in todays technology or modern sounding?

Get out of the box. Do something totally different. Find a used Martin D-18. Learn to play acoustic blues.
