And that's a bass (Lakland Decade 6) she's playing. It's tuned E-e like a guitar, but an octave lower.

She was playing guitar last night. I got to hang out in the green room with her band. She's pretty funny.

I realize that it looks like a guitar (short scale), and it often sounds like a guitar (electronics), and she often plays it like a guitar (?!?!), but trust me, it's a bass. As I said, it's tuned like a guitar, but a full octave lower: The E, A, D, and G strings are the same as on a 4-string bass -- the Lakland version of the original Fender Bass VI.

And yeah, she's great fun to hang with. Funny and very smart!

This has to be quite the experience. There are lots of instruments that one doesn’t see locally that are amazing to look at and I would love to play. Of course, my favorite was the F Bass booth and I liked seeing the Fodera and Ritter instruments too. Oh, and I shouldn’t forget Marleaux— they’ve always fascinated me. I found it interesting just how many manufacturers make Basses that are roughly the same shape. I suppose it’s a given that many people will always copy Fender shapes, but there were a number of shapes that I thought were unique to a builder only to see it repeated over and over again. One large manufacturer seems to be very consistent in copying others ideas as well as one custom builder. Maybe it’s the other way around— I’m unsure. I will say that in the early pages you had photos of a new single cut from one builder that looked like something from the Riddick series. One can decide whether that esthetic is good or bad, but shortly after those photos I saw another and I immediately thought... now that’s what a single cut should look like. Of course, then I noticed it was Sadowsky. I think Basses should do 2 things really well. Tone and appearance. Both are subjective and I know we as a group have various notions about which are better or worse. For me, I am pleased to see that there are still artists making musical instruments that sound as good as they look.

Humble request - keep shooting any photos of ABGs and EUBs. I appreciate the Breedlove shots and the new Ibanez upright thingy. What were those little, short scale looking acoustic / fretless bass guitars?

I’m on the lookout for an acceptable substitute for my upright on casual, low pressure upright jazz dates.

Great stuff Man. So many Fender P & J inspired axes too!
