They're brighter. They have the right amount of clarity and punch, without being excessive. As someone who plays hard rock mostly, it fits my style. If I need even more for stuff like slap, that's when I'll use Slinkies. 45's are more mellow.

Personally I'm a Rotosound guy, so I use Swing bass 66's on mine. If I need clarity/bright strings I'll go for Slinky's, but I don't like how they feel. They do sound bright and punchy. We all have different tastes here so it's impossible to recommend a set in particular.

Imo, it wasn't just Fender. Gibson/Epiphone, Ibanez, etc.. all made some fun stuff in the 80's, not to mention all the Aria's and copyright basses. That, and the 80's were fueled by pure cocaine so... yeah.
