Great gig cut short by a fight.....

My story sort of tame compared to some of these, but nevertheless ... Playing one of our regular spots, a bar that's been around since the 70's with clientele to match. It's usually pretty lively and I've seen some pretty incredible drunken depravity, but no real violence. Somewhere around 1a...

I'm about to kick my bass player out

Just to answer that question, I'd be pissed. I have the gear I have for a reason: because it gives me the tone I want. (I do have multiple setups for the different groups I play in, not saying that one tone fits all). That said, if it's your band and I'm playing for you, I've tried talking...

    Do you split tips?

Tips get split evenly. We usually use them to tip the servers and boot the drummer some extra gas money since he's the guy that tows the trailer to gigs, and usually keep some around for miscellaneous cables and stuff that tend to die or get left at gigs, but ultimately, if they go directly in...

    Another CL ad.

I agree. The no fivers thing is kind of ignorant, but I'd rather know about it before I waste the gas to drive over there. If nothing else, it tells me that I'm not going to enjoy these guys before I even bother to audition.

    You vs. your predecessor

I replaced a guy who is a good bit more experienced than I am, at least he has certainly gigged longer. I think he's a better player too, although I can hold my own. He quit because he was tired of the weekend bar scene, long gigs, low $'s, setup early and teardown late, etc. Basically, the...

what is up with Type-A bandleaders demanding exclusivity?

I'm in a jazz big-band that gigs only rarely, but that's the band that's actually doing the hardest music, so without that gig, I probably wouldn't be pushing myself as hard to improve. I don't want to quit that band because it's the one that's making me better. So for that reason (and because...

    Dumb Craig's List Ads thread

[Invalid or Expired Link Removed] Not so much comical, but very odd ... "not a paying gig, no pros, gigging musicians, weekend warriors ..." - HUH? You want people with no experience?? "we're on the cusp of releasing a 7"e.p. and we will be doing some time on the road following..."...

what is up with Type-A bandleaders demanding exclusivity?

To me this falls under the headings of differing goals and setting proper expectations in both directions. Personally, I don't object to someone who wants me to play exclusively for them, if the reward, monetary, challenging music, whatever, is sufficient. I'm playing for two gigging bands and...

    Suggest a good small amp

Just to close the loop on this discussion, I tried some things last night and ended up buying an Ampeg BA112. Sounds very solid for what I need. I got it for $220 before trade-in, so sounds like I got a decent deal. At any rate, thanks for the responses and the assistance!

Excellent info! Thanks for the help, I'll certainly look at those.

    Suggest a good small amp

I've got a small Behringer amp that I've been using for a jazz-swing band I play for, and as a monitor for other gigs. It's gotten road-weary, and it doesn't really have enough bottom for the swing-band (parts are really written for double-bass, which I don't play). Anyone have a suggestion...

    Another Lame Craigslist Bassist Wanted

I'm kind of ADHD, but I honestly couldn't even read all the way through that with all the spelling and grammar errors. If you're that bad when you should be trying to present yourself *well*, I doubt I want to work with you anyhow. Not that I couldn't use the gig, just saying ...

Being in more than one band.

Yeah, that's an excellent point. If your band-mates aren't doing multiple gigs too, you may need to introduce them to that culture.

Being in more than one band.

I'm in three bands now, all part-time. I have a policy of making it clear where the priorities are, just so there are no misunderstandings: $'s rank freebies, gigs rank rehearsals. Otherwise, whatever hits the calendar first wins. Main thing is, just make it clear when you join up and hopefully...

Drunk People Hitting on YOU at the Gig.

    Who is reponsible for timing?

That's my attitude. I always try to lock up with the drummer, but the amount of influence I will apply may vary ... at church I will usually drive the drummer if I feel like the tempo is sliding, but I can usually do that with hand signals. Strangely enough I've never been lynched, and most of...

How close are you to your band?

Not to be all touchy-feely, but when I saw the title of this thread I was expecting something along the lines of "do you hate your band members or hang out with them" ... I play for my church, which is about 15 miles from my house and 10 or 12 from where I catch the train to go to work. I'm...

Stuff you hate to hear another Bassist Say

Best response I've ever heard to this (not mine) was, "I did use flatwounds. What do you think I used to hang up our banner?". No shot at flatwounds, I just thought it was a great response. I envy people who can either think on their feet that well or think up stuff like that in advance. I...

"Check In" here before and after your gigs, Set #2, the sequel!

Playing at a sports-bar tonight, and then at a small club we've played before tomorrow night. Should have a good crowd tonight, not so sure about tomorrow. Loading and unloading twice in two nights is rough on my back too. Looking forward to it though. We haven't played out in about 3 wks and...

Covers you refuse to play now or ever again

I guess I'm surprised that "Mustang Sally" is so universally hated. Then again, I haven't really listened to the original bass line, so I may not be doing anything like the original line. Can I ask why you guys hate it so much? Believe me, I'm not being critical. In fact, I'm starting to...

Covers you refuse to play now or ever again

Interesting. I actually don't have too much of a problem with "Mustang Sally". Granted, the bass part is nothing special, but we've got a decent blues guitar player and it's worth sitting through it to hear him. "Margaritaville", on the other hand ... yeah, we've actually played it a couple of...

New band making me think (long post)

Sounds like you've got it pretty well figured out, but I'll throw in my 2 cents as well. I'm too chicken not to want to preserve my reputation if I can, so I'd recommend trying to work with them until they can get a replacement for you. I helped one band that I left because their schedule didn't...

Ever lose a gig for playing too well? this is LONG

I agree with this. I guess it helps that I'm not trying to a living playing, but I tend to write this kind of weirdness up to learning something early that would have been harder to learn later. I'd rather know what makes the band tick up front than invest a bunch of time and energy in something...

What's the best compliment you've ever received as a bass player?

Good one! :-) That's probably the rarest compliment of all. About half my church gigs are for groups that my wife directs. Even *she* tells me to turn down all the time.

Songs You Love Playing But Won't Admit It

Let's hear it: what are the songs you secretly love to play that would spoil your rep or earn you the scorn of your bandmates if they knew? You know, the stuff you play in the basement with your headphone amp or alone in the car. We all have them, so c'mon, spill it. Maybe a better title...

What's the best compliment you've ever received as a bass player?

That reminds me of another comment I got a few years ago. At that time I was only playing church gigs. I was sitting in with another church's orchestra, and the drummer, who is a working musician, asked me where I played. I said "church mostly", and he said, "no, I mean where do you *really*...

What's the best compliment you've ever received as a bass player?

Guitarist brought a bass player to rehearsal on Friday night who's going to sub for me on a couple of upcoming gigs. Afterwards the dude told me I had great touch. He played around a little bit after rehearsal and clearly has chops I can only dream bout. 'Twas pretty awesome.

What's the best compliment you've ever received as a bass player?

I agree. The biggest compliment is when people want me to come play with them. If somebody's willing to play alongside me, especially someone whose playing I respect, that's the acid test.

I just don't understand the musician's life. Does anybody have a full time career?

I totally agree, and I definitely count myself in that crowd. I'm fortunate enough to have a non-musical career that I really do enjoy, and to be able to play some music which I also really enjoy without the over-arching stress of having to play well enough to support myself. I would submit that...

I just don't understand the musician's life. Does anybody have a full time career?

Just an observation, in my experience it's pretty crucial to make sure everybody's goals match. Otherwise, bad things happen pretty quickly. The band I'm playing in now is a second gig for everyone involved. OK, one of the guitarists probably could do this for a living with the right hookup...

Had a great gig... WITH A BEHRINGER!

Totally agree. I'm using an all-Behringer rig, although I don't admit it too often around here. :) Truth is, I went to every music store I could find and played every rig I could put together and the Behringer just sounded better. I tried Hartkes, Ampeg ... you name it, I probably played it. I...
