I find several of these "discussions" very educational. If you want to find out everything, start an argument with an expert.

I took some theory (and forgot much more than I remember) but alot of guys over there spew out theory off the tops of their heads like I spew out lines from Caddyshack. My fault, I could study more, but the thought of asking a question over there? Intimidating to me

Amps is the forum where I most often regret making a post. The main issue seems to be that there are a higher percentage of folks there who believe that various long-debated gear issues have in fact been conclusively resolved by science, and they therefore angrily or dismissively treat anyone daring to argue to the contrary in a same manner as they might treat someone who argues that the world is flat.

I'm not scared, but I've had a couple of creepy stalkers who followed me around TB, one who quoted me, changed the language and then reported me. Dumb@$$ that he is, he didn't realize that the database keeps copies of all posts and updates so the moderators were able to check that I hadn't actually violated the rules.

I had another guy on the forum from New York that went on line, did a search on my screen name and found some work related articles that I'd written, then insinuated that there was something wrong with me because I have an actual job. I guess it's better to sponge off your wife than to have a real job. That's even creepier when someone follows you off the forum.

Most of the people on the forum are nice; some are not nice, but not bad people; then there are a few straight up psychos.

That's never happened to me here. Wonder what I'm doing wrong?

Heh, I was a regular on a few USENET groups where threatening physical harm was an everyday thing. Some of those guys are still close friends too, twenty years in.

I remember a USENET (I think) group called

alt.ensign.wesley.die.die.die

that was dedicated to hatred of the Star Trek character Ensign Wesley Crusher, played by Will Wheaton. It was basically post after post of fantasizing about how Wesley should be killed off the show. It was a little scary, so I never participated. But it was pretty funny.

For the record, I also hated Wesley Crusher...

I now know that there is a legitimate reason for a key of Cb instead of B - orneriness.

I want desperately at times to make some good spirited, and (I think) funny, jokes over in the effects forum. I dare not ever attempt that again. Just looking at the avatars of some of the posters hanging out there is enough to tame me.

I also shut off notifications to the classifieds and one particular artist forum here. The 2 unsubscriptions saves me a lot of time, money and aggravation. I'm not ascaired of those 2 places though. Just know it's better for me to keep out.

Now, that is a refreshing habit. If more people read all of the posts on a thread before commenting on the OP, there would be far fewer misunderstandings and friction. At least that has been my (recent) experience .

All forums are the same - someone's gonna like a post, someone else is gonna think it's stupid. Someone's going to misinterpret, somebody is going to cherry pick something to fit their agenda. But all in all this place is great and the mods do a good job. There are some brilliant people here, without whom this place could well be a dumpster fire.

As others have said, I have learned to stay away from certain threads. Or read them for the chuckles... because you never know what you're going to get, and there's always that one guy...

I wish I'd penned this. Well done I like it! I may just dust it off, one day, elsewhere, perhaps with a few strategic, less flammable mods, when no one's looking

Just to add, because there ain't much that ain't been said already (it is written): these rarest of places, forums, are a glory: bastions, havens, happy, safe places where we can go, when the need arises, to find some shelter and some peace; or to find well considered answers to some of our most profound and troubling questions. Good people live here.

I took surveying in college, taught out of the mining department. The class works if the world is flat. Newtonian physics works best if time space is flat. I can drive my car if the spare is flat, but two flats, it's walking time.

Now back to bass playing. If we read music, part of our world works better, if it is flat, you know Ab, Bb Db, Eb F, Gb, with Gb being the flatest common key. The Lion King had his circle, us bass players have our circle, which means our world can be flat.

Yes, yes.... I feel, that the DB side of Talkbass is some sort of unreachable Delta quadrant to which you must gain access through some kind of educational and experiential wormhole, which I have yet to discover the entrance to. The idea of a giant violin with a long, unmarked ebony fingerboard, plucked with the fingers, being a useful tool to create accurate and expressive music confounds me to this day.......

I play fretless bg, the bass came with. Fret positional marking. Another area for possible fear, bad dreams about frets disappearing.

Yeah, I am afraid of the forum, Off Topic. I allow myself to get sucked into saying personal comments and expressions about "what-not" subjects and that has gotten me into trouble. With the Moderators, and strong opinionated TB members. Being called a Troll and stuff.

I've learned some lessons in basic human psychology from TalkBass and Off Topics. To keep my own strong feelings to myself. That I can't change people's minds. That I can't really say anything that will impress someone or teach or show them something. Everybody already is an expert. Right?

So, from my lessons learned. I now just try to keep things light weight and on the humorous side. People don't like "heavy".

So yes! Off Topics on TalkBass scares me.
