I bought it from Portland Percussion in Portland, ME (they sell guitars too apparently). I spoke to the guy who runs the bass section and he says that he feels that it's just a natural wood imperfection. He's seen it before. I've had G&L's with some pretty open pores but nothing like that.

Ok, I ordered this LB-100 from The Guitar Store in Seattle. Alder, Tort, Rosewood...classic. The neck looks to be quartersawn even though it's not mentioned.

No? I thought quartersawn has the grain lines running with the direction of the neck?

This is the back of my SB-2 and has the grain going in the same direction. People here pretty much agreed that was quartersawn. But I won't really know until I see the end of the headstock. It's tough to see in the picture.

First, please receive my congratulations for giving a home to this jewel.
Your SB-2 IS quartersawn. What counts is to have the woodlines all very parallel and at a right angle to the fretboard, not slant. It cannot only be seen from a front picture. You need to examine the neck and/or the peghead in 3D.
On the last picture of your new LB-100, one can see that some wood lines are slanted in the neck curve above the nut, with a few even making a kind of U-turn. Some can be followed in a continuous manner like a triangle around the upper corner next to the E-tuning key.
Last, sometimes, vendors publish stock photos only, so, these may not be for the bass you will actually receive. I suggest you check it with the vendor before the bass ships tomorrow.

Yeah you're right. Well, we'll see. Honestly I don't feel it matters so much. It's nice to have but not a real deal killer. I've had a few G&L's without quartersawn and they were still fairly stable.

Absolutely. It however matters more with 5 string necks that have to bear a 200 lbs + tension depending on string gauge.

A 7 differences game... with actually more than 7.

Both with 1.5" nut. To me, the ASAT neck was chunkier. But not sure.

Can someone also say if some of these are typical of either ASAT or SB-2, or just species evolution between 1999 and 2005 ? I can guess the ASAT peghead lower shoulder was smoother to kinda recall the Telecaster Bass.

I sold the ASAT by mistake 3 years ago. Just welcomed the SB-2.

This is my 97 SB-2. It has a #6 neck so 1.5" thin and shallow. What appears to me a thin nut. String retainer back by the E post. Short aluminum GL marked tuners.

Early on, the default neck for the ASAT and the SB2 was the # 6, unless ordered otherwise.

For a while G&L basses had tuning machines angled back from the factory. Not sure how long they did that, but it wasn't too long.

The Candy Apple Red LB-100 is gone and I have my refund already. The 3TSB LB-100 will be here Tuesday (it was supposed to be Monday but UPS changed it...jerks) :) I hope it's perfect (aside from needing shielding in my apartment). I'm sick of flipping basses. I made a pact with the universe that if this one is a keeper, I won't buy anything until Christmas next year. I have to save for my hip surgery and then I'll be out of commission until October or so anyway :)
