Lakland Owners Group #23

Ok guys I am calling on some help here to help me make a couple of decisions.

Today I put my, new to me, DJ5 through the paces at 2 church services. I love the feel of the bass but the output was really lacking. This is the first all passive / single coil bass I have owned. Without changing any settings on my side (amp, DI, etc) the soundman literally had my gain at 2 or 3 oclock and the slider almost all the way up and my signal to the board was still very weak. For the first time ever he and everyone else told me to crank my amp up.

Without going into "fixing the soundman and system problems" I would like to get an onboard pre and change the pickups.

I do prefer a modern sound but do like the passive tones. Help me decide which pickups and pre to buy.

I have been reading about the Audere JZ3 and the East DJ Retro preamps. I want something to just drop in with no mods to be done. I know that the Audere requires drilling on the plate and that is ok.

What pickups Nordy's, Barts, etc.?

I know this is all a personal taste type thing but steer me in the right direction.

OK - before you go all "change it all".....tell us what it sounds like at home or not at church...my DJs (both the DJ4 and the DJ5) had plenty of oomph at my church...maybe there is somehting with the channel or something else....could be a short in the wiring etc....

check it out before you change it out.....if you "need" to change it out, go to a J-retro...they are great for the DJ imho...BUT you have to order it through lakland or tell teh copany you have a Lakland DJ 'cause the cavity is not a "std" J cavity.....

peace:

Doug

Hey, I was wondering, a xx-07 model is Chi equipped correct? How would one distinguish between a US and Skyline made Bass?

yes - an XX-07 is a CHI equiped bass....besides looking at the headstock, look at the serial number on teh top of teh headstock...the Skylines are inked in (black) and the US ones are all hand punched with no ink...

there are also some other more subtle ways....the necks are quarter sawn vs. not and there are subtle differences in the hardware.....

Hey guys....another late night with the band and the Lakies did not disapoint. I could go on a huge rant about the gig, as this was our first gig with the new band, but all in all everything worked out in the end. Outdoor gig with a nice stage, and minimal PA support (vox, acoustic, etc.). Ran the Glaub through my Eden WTX500 and Eden 212xlt-4, and the tone was to die for. I am really wondering if I need anything besides the Glaub. Tone, tone, Tone.........pics will be up tonight

congrats Aaron!!!! great job!!!

tone...tone...tone!

I could barely see the sticker past the exposed toes! LOL, you, my friend, are braver than I. I can't pull off open toed footwear, no matter how much my wife tries...

yeh, but his jeans almost cover the feet entirely!!!

GREAT pics Aaron...

PS - nuthin wrong with "fat guy Bass face".....I do it all of the time....and you are thinner than me - by far!!!

So it was definitely a tale of two nights this weekend.... Friday night-> big stage, stellar flown soundrig, big crowd....

...and Saturday night a stage about the size of the drum riser from the previous night, a not-fully-functional Behringer "PA", but still a decent crowd....

Randy:

both look fun!!!!

wow...nice bass...where did you get that? :ninja:

Im actually trying to get Buffords DJ, as it has been my all time favorite body shape for years.

Ill slap an active preamp in it down the road though. Maybe a refin... in Markus Orange! :bassist:

OK - that will make it the second Orange DJ on TB! the refin is not cheap....but it MAY be worth it....PM Gecko 5 for a price...he was going to refin a BG....I forget how much the refin was...I guess Skylines are more becuse the paint is harder to remove....

good luck...Terry is a GREAT guy to deal with....

Ok Doug...all this Anti-3TB hatred you are spewing has GOT to STOP! This is freaking america! (Although that butterscotch with the rosewood board looks hot). OK, I will give in on the 3TB for the LOG bass, if you can give me blocks AND binding? Do we have a deal? :ninja:

sorry Aaron...I am done....sorry my friend....I guess you caught me at a bad time...

black blocks no binding???? OK by you!?

Evan, as long as the "relicing" is real and natural, all is GOOD...when you purposefully take to dinging the bass, that is where I find the probpmeo.

I just strap it to mycar and do donuts in the parking lot... it just gets dings here and there. When I'm playing a club with hundreds of drunks dancing, things happen. Especially if they get on stage.

Guys,

I heard from a good friend of mine that when they got their DJ5 there was a few problems. The neck was highly radiused, the neck was thicker than the average jazz bass, and it had a "bland" tone..

All three of those things are bad for me, as I like a thin neck (I play a Geddy, remember!), I like loooow action, and I want something bright and growly. I know a preamp will help that, but I can say that will be an immediate thing as cash will be low.

then get a JO...less radius.....no bland tone (actually, none of my DJs had a bland tone either...they both growled well)....
