Ok guys I am calling on some help here to help me make a couple of decisions.
Today I put my, new to me, DJ5 through the paces at 2 church services. I love the feel of the bass but the output was really lacking. This is the first all passive / single coil bass I have owned. Without changing any settings on my side (amp, DI, etc) the soundman literally had my gain at 2 or 3 oclock and the slider almost all the way up and my signal to the board was still very weak. For the first time ever he and everyone else told me to crank my amp up.
Without going into "fixing the soundman and system problems" I would like to get an onboard pre and change the pickups.
I do prefer a modern sound but do like the passive tones. Help me decide which pickups and pre to buy.
I have been reading about the Audere JZ3 and the East DJ Retro preamps. I want something to just drop in with no mods to be done. I know that the Audere requires drilling on the plate and that is ok.
What pickups Nordy's, Barts, etc.?
I know this is all a personal taste type thing but steer me in the right direction.
OK - before you go all "change it all".....tell us what it sounds like at home or not at church...my DJs (both the DJ4 and the DJ5) had plenty of oomph at my church...maybe there is somehting with the channel or something else....could be a short in the wiring etc....
check it out before you change it out.....if you "need" to change it out, go to a J-retro...they are great for the DJ imho...BUT you have to order it through lakland or tell teh copany you have a Lakland DJ 'cause the cavity is not a "std" J cavity.....
peace:
Doug
