I'm 6'1" and I've never hit it on a door frame. The straps will adjust so the bass sits lower.

the straps on my Lakland Dual GB are not adjustable. I always feel dorky having to duck trough doorways so it never goes on my back....unless I am outside. it does sit kinda high. ...and I am only 6' 2"

I'd go for the 55-01 and put in Nordstrand Fat Stacks

...that seems like a common mod....I think that would be a cool sound and they pretty much drop right in...

Back in my "professional" musician days, I only played 5 strings. The only thing that appeals to me about 5 now is a high C string.

never think I would use a high C...(or a V-8 for that matter...sorry - bad beverage joke)....I like the Low B...

I had a TL-6 that I REALLY miss. If I could find the right color, I'd go with a TL-6.

I'm leaning towards the 55-01, but I want to find the right one. I'd like to find a deluxe, but they are few and far between. If I go with a standard 55-01, the grain has to be nice...Yep, I'm picky.

...get one of the spalt top ones...those are cool!

I googled TL-6 images. Naturally, most results pointed back to Talkbass, including this one:

nice panorama....now just get a bunch of 55-84s in similar colors..

there have been several people trying to get Lakland to make a 6 string but the market is really small...

Monster cables are notorious for reaming jack inserts. Even to the point where other cables won't work.

really? I use a Monster cable...it is "snug"...that is part of what I liked about it...now...hmmmmm.....reaming out is not a good thought...

OK - beverage number 2: Muddled peach; a bit of sugar; Jack and some seltzer over ice...refreshing!

The double "P" setup in those is absolutely incredible. It's thick, lush and warm. I would love Lakland to offer it in an active bass.

I THINK you just found your fiver Tex! have them build you one of buy a 55-01 and modify it (of course the pickguard design would have to get creative)....

All I know is the guy that owns those is one lucky so....wait.....those are mine! Sorry. Carry on!

I think what bothers me about it the most is that it looks like the first step of the Hanson guitar looks leaking into the Lakland line. The overall body shape looks way more like a Hanson guitar than a Lakland bass.

When I grow up I want to get a new bass every week just like Markus.

To me, It's looks are reminiscent of the old violin bass, but different enough to be unique. Smart look and design IMO.


Sorry... not all my fault but we are pretty cool fellows here in the LOG and don't get all worked up like some threads do. Plus... that bass isn't in direct competition with any product Lakland sells.

So the blend in design is something they are intentionally working for? I guess I understand but they bought a company with it's own style already and it would be cool to see new designs flow down that path. I will admit though that I don't like the look of Hanson guitars at all (at least the solidbody models).

...I think there will be a healthy mix of both.....I love the styling on their 6 string HBs...if I ever played guitar I would get one of those...

I just picked up a 44-60 AJ yesterday. Absolutely loving it so far. I think it's a lot better than the 3 Fenders I have. I'll have pics up of it later.

Just busting your chops. Without Fender and his innovations, none of us would have an obsession to dump tons of money into and waste a large part of our lives. Leo gave us purpose and a starting point. Dan Lakin gave us perfection and passion.

The connection to the violin bass puts it in better perspective as well. Makes sense in that "slot".

Oh yes... Put some hours in for sure! Zero neck dive...not even close. The horn is short of the 12 fret, but it's a short scale. Less leverage for the headstock weight to use towards neck dive.

..ask Markus....he can talk all about it I am sure...I bet his min-HB was played for many hours long sessions....

My issue with the short scale HB is the potential for neck dive with a light body, larger headstock (not taking the angle of the photo into account - it's just big for this body) and the upper horn not reaching the 12th fret - where's the balance point on this thing?

I had a pretty interesting day Saturday. The "should've been a 40 minute drive" that took 90 minutes thanks to traffic (perhaps caused by the Chicago Blues Fest) was ultimately worth it for several reasons.

Here's one:

That's me with the first Lakland bass ever made (SN# X1) which was pretty mojo-riffic. Also a couple of other pieces of Lakland history from Dan Lakin's personal collection, including a dual Darkstar Decade that sounded monstrous.

I'll post some other details from my visit in a different thread.

I'd really like for my next bass to be Decade outfitted with a 1.625 width neck. Is the possibility of swapping a Decade neck for one from a 44-01/2 an option? Only reason I could consider it not working is the neck pocket in the body being too shallow.

yup...that can be done...

They can do a 1.62 neck. They've put them on JOs and Glaubs. Same pocket as the Decade.

String question re: 44-60 LE Chi-Sonic. Figured I'd get a more specific response here than in Strings. I set it up with TI flats because I hate clank and zing. Sounds a bit thin. On Jason's rec, I just put GHS Pressurewounds on another jazz and they sound nice and full. Try those, or maybe Groundwounds? Also I have TI rounds on a jazz. Pricey, sound good, tiny little gauges. Others?

Try a set of nickels.....less bright than stainless and still full bodied....

As a longtime lurker on the LOG thread (mostly to check out Markus's basses...), I can attest to the fact that this is the most awesome looking thing he's ever posted (as well as the only one of his possessions I could probably afford at the moment...).

Also: does it have any neck dive?

Neck dive...well I use a wide strap that is velcro backed, and always wear a spandex shirt, so it stays put!

And, in combination with my last post, how do the Skyline models of Lakland basses (particularly the 44-64 Custom) hold up to the U.S. models? I've seen the comparison on Lakland's site, which makes it clear that they have very similar specs, but I was wondering for a hands on comparison.

I've always wanted a Precision with a Jazz neck, and when I saw the Skyline 44-64 was about $400 cheaper than what a Warmoth build would be I immediately started GASing. The reason I'm asking is because I plan on saving up enough of my money to buy myself a graduation present (which, albeit, is a year away, but you can never start too early).

All comments are appreciated.

my first 2 Lakies were Skylines and 3 out of my current 9 lakies are Skylines....one is from 2002 (I bought it used) and it is holding up wonderfully!

a 44-64 (which I had at one point) is a GREAT bass for the buck....MUCH nicer (IMHO) than a US Fender...

I have a 44-64 Skyline that absolutely kills any Fender that I have played, even the customs. Compared to a US Lakland, the hardware on the US is slightly different and the neck has a more refined feel. I've played both and personally, I have a hard time justifying the price difference simply because I love the way that the Skylines feel and I'm happy with them.

The Skylines, IMO, are what US Custom Fenders strive to be, but Fender just can't get there. The necks on every Skyline that I have (I have 4) are stable, the bass is well balanced, the fret work is near perfect and they are just comfortable. As far as sound, it's an eargasm. The stock electronics sound wonderful and nail that vintage that sound with a more presence.

Your mileage may vary. I am very picky about my sound and feel of the basses that I play. I did music retail for several years and have played more basses than I could count because of it. I can honestly say that I have never played a better or more comfortable bass than a Lakland. After I bought my first Lakland Skyline, every other bass that I had was up for sale and within two weeks, I had bought a total of 3 Lakland Skylines.

The only reason at this point that I am considering a US Lakland is for the custom color and specs. That's all. I am totally happy with the Skylines. One other thing, Lakland has the best customer service out there.

^ this....and as for color....a refin is only $300 to $400 away if you want to change the color...

I've been drawn to Lakland basses recently because whenever I come on the LOG thread people are always buying more Laklands, or praising the Laklands they already own, or selling other brands of basses so they can have room for more Laklands...they have a very intense following, and I really want to own a bass that makes me feel this way, because I'm getting a lot more serious about playing.

My last purchase (an Ibanez) was me trying to get away from Fenders/basses that are sort of like Fenders, but (while my Soundgear is totally awesome) I started longing for a traditional looking/sounding bass again. I knew I didn't want to go back to Fenders though, so when I found out about Lakland it seemed perfect.

It sounds like you're saying that even the "lower end" Laklands are better than "high end" Fenders...why wouldn't I want that!?

And yeah, ideally the Skyline 44-64 Custom would be available in LPB, but CAR is starting to grow on me...

Thanks again for the review...my desire to join the Cult of Lakland has definitely increased now!

Stopped at my local GC on the way home just to noodle around. Guess which bass was the best feeling and sounding one in the room?

It's from 2003-04 from what I can tell. Different sound from my '99 4-94... A little more midrange 'thunk' and a more muted top end but it definitely sounded good. The neck felt a little thicker front to back than mine too. But all in all it was sweet as hell.

If I had an extra $2200 I'd get it and keep some flats on it

So I played my HB this morning at church and I'm pleased to report that it handles dirt really well. I got several comments about the sound. The clean sound was nice and full, and the Darkglass B3K was screaming nicely!
