Hip hop is harder than playing bass. Don't believe it? Try it. Create a backing track, write some words, perform your hip hop at a local open mic, and see what happens. Chances are you'll go over like a Lead Zeppelin.

One of my very favorite love songs of the last few years.
Dubbed "Emo Hip Hop," the track has 710 million hits on Youtube alone.
66 million spins in the first 12 days it was posted online, so it was a smash hit before the
death of the recording artist at age 20 last summer. Kid had such a beautiful voice, it cuts
through me every time I hear it.

Also, a great way as an old guy to mortify a kid of any age is to start rapping.
I used to mercilessly tease a friend's kid in public with this. He would look stricken as soon as I started bustin' rhymes,
then go walk on the opposite side of the street.

I can think of few things I'd less rather watch. So I didn't. That guy needs to go crawl in a hole somewhere and never come out.

Well, I'm probably 20+ years younger than most of you, and frankly, today's music is pretty crap. There are some good things out there, but you basically have to get Newton'd with the apple falling on your head to find out about them. 3 recent examples... Kimbra - she sang on one of the biggest hits of 2011/2012 by another artist, which I happened to hear on the radio on a road trip (one of the rare times I ever listen to radio), and then came across again a few months later and decided to look into her. Bent Knee - I went to a demo for recording plug ins at a studio and one of their then new tracks was what they loaded up for us to play with. Moetar - a fan of one of my bands messaged the band after a show and mentioned them, so I checked them out.
But radio, TV, even FB friends, it's mostly a wasteland of generic over produced crap. If generic overproduced crap is your thing, lucky you. But for those of us with more discerning tastes, these days are pretty depressing.
Yeah, so lets give Bernie Worrell all the credit he deserves for making these guys' careers. Oh wait, he died of a terminal illness more or less broke and more or less in obscurity. Honestly, he should have had the best of the best medical care, because Dr Dre should have personally invited him to stay with him and take care of his medical bills.
99 was the crappy limp bizkit one, 94 was pretty good in terms of lineup. Traffic and a lot of the best of the early/mid 90s alternative stuff.

Anyway, rap or not, this lineup is straight garbage and anyone being truly honest will admit that. Having some of the legendary artists from the original almost makes it worse in a way, because it stains THEM being associated with so much drivel. Miley Cyrus, really? She's one step away from having a sex robot that plays grocery store muzak on stage.
The people saying "oh, the first one was a money grab too!", I think are kind of missing the point. I'm sure they were not looking to lose money, for sure. But whether by design or accident, the lineup that was chosen was magical. I bet there were a lot of relatively well known bands that would have been cheaper than say Hendrix, the Who, etc... I mean, these are TITANIC legendary artists, and the lineup is just PACKED with them. Even outliers like Shankar, Havens, etc... And sure, a few that were more "of their time". But even John Sebastian had an enduring hit or 2 (come on, admit it, Summer in the City still jams).
But now, we don't have a music culture even remotely any more. Sad but true. So what's out there in the mainstream has nowhere near the cultural cache as that of 1969, or 1994, or honestly, even 1999. I listened to that Courtney Barnett that got mentioned a couple times as a better example of new stuff on the lineup. Not too impressed. Kind of a diluted Velvet Underground vibe, complete with faux Wes Anderson Royal Tennenbaums pastiche video. Where's the vitality? Hell, why is Kimbra not on this? She's reasonably successful/popular, and an engaging live performer who makes distinctive music that is friendly to both youth and "old timers" alike (and probably the only "pop" artist influenced by King Crimson and Dillinger Escape Plan AND Janet Jackson). Warpaint would be another good choice, and they play Coachella all the time with their very festival friendly sound. Mastodon for something heavier. Or Baroness who someone mentioned and will have new album out before this happens. Shifty Zeppelin retread nonsense? Really? When you have ROBERT freakin PLANT already on the bill?
Anyway, all the idiots that are going to pay hundreds of dollars to go to this are surely going to ruin Watkins Glen. I will be so pissed if these f-ers do any permanent damage. It's a beautiful area. Hopefully they all stay penned up at the speedway.

True.... and it might not be new but at least if you used it years ago, you were called out on it.. now it's no big deal at all. Really ? Concerts might be "entertainment" but coughing up a big chunk of your weekly paycheck for a ticket to watch someone fake the singing is a bit brutal and for some reason, nowdays, it's OK..... the times are changing.
Nope. I think after Holdsworth, Malmsteen, Satriani, Vai etc... younger generations of rock fans seemed like they wanted nothing to do with the time it took to be as technically proficient as those guys I mentioned, so I saw them all do a collective 180 and gave music that took some real WORK to know how to perform, the grungy middle finger.
Nirvana, Green Day.. etc.. Sorry, but that, to me, was a big red flag that it's OVER.
And... to the bulk of younger "music" fans, jazz and blues is "CORNY".

Yes, because I've never practiced. If I devoted 1/100th the time to rapping as I did to music, I could rap. If I devoted 1/100th the amount of time to a drum machine, I'd create some catchy beats. I've done that already. The Turtles court case ruined sampling and the collages of great sounds derived from it. I would love to practice that, but I'd rather play an instrument.
After the cluster $#%& of the last time they tried to revive this thing, they should just give up on it.
