How do bad singers get away with sounding good?

And Michael McDonald and Ray Charles.

How do bad singers get away with sounding good?

THAT guy can SING. Saw him a season ago or so ago on Masked Singer and you know what? He's STILL got it. He's lost nothing vocally to the years. He's aging as are we all but man he can still seriously sing a song!!! I was amazed. I've always been a fan of his.

    Who's your favorite bassist?

There are many others but my top 3 are: Jaco Rocco Marcus I will also mention a couple of maybe lesser known cats at least to some: Nate Phillips John Mazzocco

    What is a "set"?

In addition to my other post, if you get a slot at an event or a blues jam or charity thing or something besides an actual hired club or concert gig, and they say: "play for a half hour" or "you've got 45 minutes" or whatever it is, that's also "a set". If you do good and people dig it they'll...

    What is a "set"?

A set back in my day (been awhile back now) in the club scene used to be an hour. Play an hour or so. Break 20 to 30 minutes. Play another solid hour or so. Break 30 minutes. Play till they told you to stop. Go home. It varied/was somewhat fluctuating depending on whatever but that was the...

    Another pickguard choice

Tort. That's what I always say because that's what I almost always like. BUT, as an alternative, there's was this other thread here today that I can't locate now where this person posted a cool greenish PG. With the red bass and natural fretboard, the addition of a greenish pickguard would be...

New Harley Benton Line MV Series basses

Tempting but I can't stand painted headstocks.

How do you feel about concerts "with" dead musicians?

Absolutely loved it when Natalie Cole dueted with her father Nat King Cole on a big screen behind her in concert. Sadly, she too is deceased now. Loved them both. Still do of course. Thank goodness for recordings.

    NBD

    Tort. No question.

    Who's your favorite lead guitarist?

Per the above post...........I saw Emily once many years ago in a Pittsburgh jazz club. I don't recall there being a cover or anything to get in even. She was great.

    Tortquoise?

I keep going back to page one/post one to drool over that bass. Agreed........turquoise and tort are a fire combo. Now I have GAS for one. The list of things tort does not look great on is a rather short one but that turquoise with tort is just brilliant. Like make that image my new screensaver...

    Who's your favorite lead guitarist?

Gak it's too hard without a miles long list developing. If forced to keep it shorter the first several that come to mind? Robben Ford Chris Cain Larry Carlton Billy Gibbons Sean Costello George Benson Freddy King Stevie Ray Vaughan Jeff Beck Al McKay Bruce Conte Lee Ritenour Norman Brown Nick...

How Is Fender USA Quality Control Soooo Horrible?

It's so funny you said that. My first thought was: 21K and no tort? I would slap tort on that first thing. They can't even install the proper pickguard for 21K???

Herbie Hancock and Jaco Pastorius 1977

Jaco was just amazing when he wasn't trying to do weird solos. OK some of that was good too but when he just played and grooved, man, killer. Groove monster.

    TransBlue with Tort PG?

The tort one looks on FIRE good. That looks incredible. THAT is a great look. The mirror one. No. Awful. IMO of course but, ugh. Black if you must. It works. But my heartfelt vote would be for the tort.
  17. BassAndCigars

Our god is not Jaco or any other hotshots

I like passive basses and don't use any pedals at the moment anyway. So my heroes remain: Jaco, Rocco, Marcus Miller, Verdine White and a few others.
  18. BassAndCigars

    I'm a tort junkie, but...

Personally I think that looks great. Nice.

    That is GORGEOUS.

    Another Tort Thread - Yay!

Tort and it isn't even close.

NBD "Vintage" 1991 EBMM Stingray 5

What is the "original" pickguard you mentioned? You didn't say. I'm not fond of the one in the pics. If it were mine I'd drop in a nice classic tort on that.
  23. BassAndCigars

You can only have one bass, but FSO don't exist. What do you have?

No MusicMan either? Probably a Gibson EB-3 or Reverend or Ibanez or Yamaha or something. It would suck though. Fender Jazz is kinda king far as I'm concerned.

    "Toodles"

Yeah just means "goodbye" basically. It is also sometimes expressed "toodle-oo". Very common. Heard it all my life. Nothing new.

What's your least favorite color for a bass guitar?

See? Tort can fix nearly anything!!! I hate Antigua but that suddenly looks GOOD to me! NOW it's a party. EDIT: I don't know why the quote and pic double-posted. I can't seem to figure out how to fix it. My apologies. But hey, double tort pics so it's a win/win am I right?

What's Your Favorite Color for a Bass Guitar?

    1. Sunburst. Classic vintage Fender jazz sunburst with rosewood neck and TORT. Numero uno favorite classic timeless look. 2. Black. With rosewood and tort. 3. White. Aged/off-white/ivory with maple neck and white pickguard. The Blondie look. 4. Greens or blues or sometimes silver with rosewood...

What's your least favorite color for a bass guitar?

LEAST favorite? Oh off the top of my head I'd say purple or antigua. Not a fan. Nor am I a fan of "matching headstocks" usually for some reason. Not crazy about "natural" no color basses. My MOST favorite/forever iconic color is the classic sunburst/rosewood fingerboard with tort on a Fender...

Pickguard choice for a Fender Pbass

Tort is always the correct answer but for me personally, as stock and Fendery a one as you can acquire. I'm not a fan of new weird "spitfire" tort and such things etc. And to me, black would not work on that bass at all. Very blah. Not a good look. JMO. Honestly best choice might be just white...

Not a bassist, but R.I.P., sax great David Sanborn....

Among all his incredible music, I really enjoy this one. I've been playing it over and over and over actually.

Not a bassist, but R.I.P., sax great David Sanborn....

A crushing loss. One of the most soulful artists to ever play any instrument really. So unique. Just a killer feel and note choice soulful master. Love ALL his solo efforts and his contributions to soooo many other artists music as well. He was also in the SNL band for awhile. Played with Paul...

Oooooh nice slice Lenny. That's a good tort. Looks great.

    Need pickguard suggestions please

I like the original tort although that's not the nicest tort I've ever seen Bit manic. But I like the brown tort. Not sure about red. Maybe find a little more subtle brownish with a hint of reddishness to it. More classic tort in other words. That's what I would do anyway.

    What’s wrong with me?

Nothing whatsoever wrong with Peavey or Carvin or Squier or whatever. And hey, at least you're playing REAL GEAR and not that "in ear" trash that seems to be inexplicably gaining in popularity these days. Play your gear. Play it like a mutha fricker and don't worry about the labels.

    NBD: Best color ever?

You had me at tort. Rosewood or similar fingerboard would be better but, yes, nice color and TORT.

Can anyone really play LIKE Jaco?

One of the finest, most iconic musicians of our lifetimes. Big shoes to fill. Just incredible music both solo as well as with others like Weather Report, Joni etc. The world of recorded music would be a sadder place without there having been a Jaco. Top of the heap in my personal top 5 bassists...

Your Jazz Bass settings: static or fluid?

Bridge more or less full on. Tone about 30% up. Maybe less. Neck pickup rolled up slightly. Like maybe 1/4 on at most.
