listen to a lot of music. Find music that you dig the rhythm section specifically. Listen to the drummers and how they interact with the bassist. I spend at least half of my designated practice time just listening to music.

my amp is a glorified stage monitor. I run a JDI passive DI that sends the signal to the PA. Rather then abuse the house monitors I turn my amp sideways on stage so the band members here it and it doesn't start to clash with PA speakers.
