Your Favorite Bass Store & Why..?

The best part of living in Seattle! I can't say enough good things about them-I've been shopping there for 16 years! Every time I set foot in another store, I'm always dissapointed! And no, I don't work there-never have!

    Which Bass make is best?

I say G&L, with Musicman being a close second. Since this is a popularity contest, Fender will win.

Looking for a versatile bass. Suggestions? Reference links included.

My Swiss Army knife bass of choice is the G&L L-2500 with the K-switch (single coil) option. You get a bass that gets the old school tones in passive mode (the bass & treble contols work in passive mode), and modern sounds in active mode. My only issue with this bass, is that I wish the sting...

    Music Man sound and pickups

I recently aquired a 1990 MM SR5, and in parallel mode it sounds great like it should, but in series & single coil, it gets a "single coil" type hum. I was wondering if anyone else has experienced this. Is it a wiring issue?

Active or Passive Bass - Which do you Prefer?

For rock, reggae, or old school soul (Motown, Stax, etc.), I definitely prefer passive. For more modern funk/R&B, gospel, or for fretless, I like active.

Mesa 400+ vs Ampeg STV-4 Pro

I've bought my Mesa 400+ used over 12 years ago, and it rocks! I bought a used SVT4 Pro, because I liked the sound of my SVT3 for funk, but wanted more power. Big mistake-it didn't sound nearly as good as either amp, and one of the power amps quit working after 2 weeks! You also have to make...

Fingerboard wood: Are you maple or rosewood (or light v. dark)

I usually prefer the look of darker woods, but lately I've been more into maple fingerboards, because they're easier to see under certain stage lights, and they get slightly better upper midrange attack IMHO.

Carvin LB70 vs HH Ray and G&L L-2000

I have owned all 3 (well my Carvin was a BB-75, but same electronics), and I have stuck with the G&L, because even though it doesn't look as nice as the other 2, it is more versatile, and is the only one that will cut through the mix in my 11 peice funk band. Also, you can run it passive and...

    G & L M2000

I tried out the 5 string at Bass NW today, and I loved it, although I might miss having the Series/Parallel switch. I think it will be a hit with people who prefer the more common blend and boost/cut knobs. I may have to get one!

    G&L L2000 (US) vs. Lakland 44-02

My G&L's have the K switch, and can nail the P & J tones, but only a Stingray sounds like a Stingray.

Audere vs Steve Bailey for Squier Fretless

I don't have much experience with the Audere, but I have the Steve Bailey system in my custom built 5 string fretless, and I love it! The 3 band EQ is voiced well for fretless. It also has a contour switch with 2 trim pots in the contol cavity.

Where do you like your Jack?

I've never liked side jacks, because they get in the way when you put the bass on a stand. Also, since I'm such a G&L fanatic, the front jack mounted on the metal plate is much more durable than the side barrell jack.

If Only One Bass, Fender or Sadowsky?

I've owned lots of Fenders, but since I play mostly 5 string these days, and I'm not impressed with Fender 5's, I have to go with Sadowsky.

If Only One Bass, Fender or Fodera?

Foderas are much nicer, but in the real world, I can cover more jobs with a Fender.

Should Bassists learn how to play guitar as well?

I was going to say no-there are already too many guitars players in this world, but it has come in useful knowing guitar & keyboard chords when you sit in at a jam session and need to watch for the changes. Also, I like to lay down guitar tracks in my home studio. Every few years, I play with a...

    GHS Pressure Wound string lengths!

[Invalid or Expired Link Removed] These are the strings I use on my 34" scale Fender Bullet Deluxe. The E-string winding wraps partway around the post, but I've had it on the bass for almost a year with no problems. I have also used these strings on my G&L basses. I don't know if your...

    '93 Climax with added neck PU and stock '08 L2K with K-switch. Can I get a #?
  32. T

So... When did you leap to 5+ strings?

I got my first 5 string in early '94, when I had been playing about 7 years. At the time, I had great chops, but my timing needed improvement, so I got a 5 string with a wide neck to slow me down, so I would focus on rhythm more. It worked.
