Reiner Amplification Megathread

At this point in my career I'm basically done with tweeters up top as well as uber-deep bass extension down low. I'm more of a "slot in above the kick and not get so high that I start interfering with female vocals and cymbal wash" kind of guy. Does this sound more like the mid-loaded cabs or the rock cabs to you? I tend to like it punchy and articulate without losing too much down low. I also prefer my cabs to be more of a sound reproduction device than something that's going to be delivery the snarly overdriven components to a tone I'm trying to deliver. Recently I've owned a Bergantino NV412T and still own an HD210. I preferred the tone of the HD210 with the tweeter rolled almost all the way off to the NV412T.

Rambling over... Thoughts? Preferences?

The "Rock" cab sounds like the winner for you. Again all thee sounds really good, its just different flavors of good. Punchy, Rock cab! We actually played them with two different distortion pedals. Didn't loose anything, just got dirty...

Fellow Studio 1200 owners,

Any of you have an Ampeg 210AV cabinet? I'm curious how well, if at all, the 1200 fits on top?

The 210AV is listed as 11" deep, and the feet on my 1200 are just about 11" apart on the outside.

My slant Heritage 810e is just about 11" deep on top (the flat part .. the edges are rolled) and the 1200 just fits. Of course I wouldn't be driving the 210 hard enough to knock the amp off ...

My Ashdown CTM-15 would be the usual amp I'd use with the 210AV, but I'm curious how well the 1200 would fit on that 210 cabinet if any of you know ...?

I'm sure my Ampeg V4b and Kustom K250 would each get some play time through it too :)

I like the sealed vibe of my 810 and personally not interested in ported cabinets or tweeters. They are great, just not what I'm after.

I got a mostly-Elvis sub gig and went old school. No fx or nuthin', just vintage P-style basses into Reiner into cab. S1200 DI went to FOH; got a compliment from the soundman on my tone -- that happens quite regularly since I've been using Reiner gear!

Yep, I'll bet that would kill. I really enjoyed taking your amp for a spin yesterday at the Seattle GTG. It acts a lot like what I expected, given JGR's cab preferences and amp design philosophies that he's mentioned over the years. Link Removed

That was a pretty tough environment to hear anything, but I did get a few compliments on it. I'm excited to see @JGR's cabs come to life.

I actually caught a relatively quiet moment to try it with my Thunderchild cab and my bass, which at least cut variables a lot. I would've loved to try it with Roger Baer's 2 x ML112 stack, as your amp seemed a bit familial to the Baer Valkyrie, and it's a bit of overkill for my single TC112 @4 ohms. Jonathans's new 700 watter would probably be a great match though, I reckon.

Not long ago I asked Jonathan about moderately priced tube recommendations for the 1200, here's his reply: "For the middle tube, reissue Tung Sol 12aX7. Left and right tubes, JJ gold pin 12aU7." I haven't tried these yet, but will probably get them from Antique Electronics Supply, where I bought tubes for my Reiner 1U preamp awhile back.

Note that recommendations will likely vary depending on budget.

Typically I'm not a fan of swapping different tube types because I like to really optimize a circuit for a specific tube, but the Studio's gain topology is a bit different and seems to lend itself better to a variety of different tubes. I'm going to spend some more time playing with different types, but I really like the 12at7, which in some circuits doesn't sound so nice, as well as the 12ax7. While both offer a lot more dirt at higher gain settings, they also impart different vibes at cleaner settings which might be appealing depending on your style of music and how hot your bass is. I'm pretty sure I have a 5751 laying around somewhere, and I'm going to give that a whirl as well.

Yup, that is what I put in them now as standard - they are great sounding new production tubes! The JJ gold 12ax7 is also nice sounding - very clean and crisp, but sometimes a bit too much so depending. I have all JJ gold in my DB680 (ax7 and au7), and they sound great in that application.



EDIT: had a little bit of time to play around this evening and I really like 12at7s in the first and second slots, or a 5751 in the first slot and a 12at7 in the second slot. First config is a bit warmer and rounder while the second config has more crispness. Very early observations but it looks (sounds) promising.

@thumbs&fingers, I know that's a MAS 112, but which 4 Ohm driver are we talking about? Were you running the Studio 1200 into an 8 Ohm cab before? I imagine that the Studio has plenty of juice on tap for 8 or 4 Ohms, but do you notice any difference running it at 4 Ohms (that is, if you were running at 8 before)?

The angle of the shot almost makes the water heaters look like two huge capacitors growing out of the back of the amp and cab. For those transient peaks, I suppose. Very sci-fi.
