How many bands of EQ do you prefer?

My amp has a 3 band, as does my DI/Preamp. I'm pretty happy with that setup. Although in the 90s I played through a 12 band Trace Elliot. Today that just seems like so much work to me. What about you? What do you use/prefer?

    MTD CRB4 "Clack!"

In the video below he plays an MTD CRB5 with maple fretboard. I have the CRB4 with rosewood fretboard. But they both share a common problem. Watch the video and listen for the "clack" everytime he changes frets with his left hand. Not only does mine do the same, but it makes it through the...

    Hartke Math vs. actual math

I'm thinking of buying a Hartke 410XL to match my Hartke LH500. I found one on CL at a reasonable price. One thing that drew me to it was the power rating Hartke gives on the website (see first pic.) 400w @ 8 ohms would be right in the pocket. But the cab itself has something different to say...

    True Temperament Fretboards

What do y'all think about true temperament fretboards like the one Henrik Linder plays. Do you think nailing a third or a thirteen or whatever mathematically perfectly is a big deal? Personally I think Linder is such a badass that I don't really notice his intonation. Hahaha! Googling "true...

The Life and Art of Bass Playing by Tony Levin

Excerpt from: Beyond the Bass Clef The Life and Art of Bass Playing by Tony Levin In the beginning there was a bass. It was a Fender, probably a Precision, but it could have been a Jazz - nobody knows. Anyway, it was very old ... definitely pre-C.B.S. And God looked down upon it and saw that...

    Tube amp power (volume) question

When my band was playing smaller gigs I stuck with 350w Class D > 2x10 cab, sometimes with a line to the FOH, sometimes not. When we started playing bigger gigs I had to up it to 500w Class D > two 2x10 cabs. Now we're playing bigger gigs, and although I expect to line out to the FOH everytime...

What's the longest you've gone without your bass?

My (ugh!) day job sent me to Bismarck, ND for a month. Literally one month. Since I don't have a flight case for my basses, I didn't bring any. Good thing too, because the airlines left my luggage in Austin. So here I sit, in a swank hotel, without the distractions of day to day family life...

    What is this gorgeous bass?

What is this gorgeous bass Ricky Phillips is playing in this concert. There are lots of great shots of it. But the best are at 2:55, 3:48, and he very end. It sounds great, but looks stunning. Just can't tell what it is. Also notice (2:55 is the best shot of this) Chuck Panozzo is on stage too...

Cabs with different resistance paired... maybe.

If I already run a 2x10 400w 8 ohm from a Hartke LH500, and add a 1x15 600w 4 ohm cab (same manufacturer) from the second output jack, I'm still groovy, right? Because that sounds right to me. I'm thinking about pulling the trigger on it this weekend.

    MTD CRB4 first impressions

Look what the stork left at my door (even though I was home all day and the delivery driver never knocked or rang the bell.) My new MTD CRB4. I'll post a pic from this weekend's gigs when I get 'em. First impressions: Finish Trans black is lovely and subtle. The mother-of-toilet-seat pick...

    2-Minute Bass Lesson page

There is a page on the MTD Kingston site called the 2-Minute Bass Lesson. It's not comprehensive. But you could use it to add a new technique or a little theory to your workout. Happy practicing. Enjoy. [Invalid or Expired Link Removed]

How to turn off the sexy

A text from Teddy, my guitarist today: "Dude, I got a lot of messages this morning about you. You were quite the object of desire last night. I'm gonna have to insist you wear your wedding ring. You're banned from being sexy." As much as love giving the fans what they want, my #1 fan the wifey...

    Taping fingers. Does it help?

Two weeks ago I played 6 gigs in a week. A lot of fun, good money, but the fingers on my plucking hand ached. So much so I was using a pick by the end of the last gig. This week I've already played one gig and have four more to go. I'm considering taping my fingers on my right hand. Does this...

    Three Budget Basses

Decisions! Decisions! What to do when one has G.A.S.?! While I dearly love my Aria Pro II TSB-350, I just want something new. Just cuz I wanna. I've been looking at basses under $500 and found a surprising array of quality choices that I would actually gig with. I narrowed down my personal...

I needed an envelope filter. That's really it. Just an envelope filter. I don't use effects, but my repertoire is expanding and I needed an envelope filter. 115 or another 210

I'm playing Rock, Blues, R&B, Motown, Funk, etc through a Hartke LH500 into a Peavey Headliner 210 (see pic.) It's working fine for most gigs. But we have started playing outdoors a lot more, and the 210 just isn't pushing enough air. I crank the amp volume to 3 o'clock and the speaker...

    Rant: Music Industry Genres

Let's address the elephant in the room. First, an example. What exactly is it that made anyone assume that 5 Seconds of Summer even remotely resembles anything that ever qualified to be labeled "punk"? Even "pop-punk"? I've grown increasingly annoyed over the last decade by what has become a...

    Watt did you say, again?

Old question, new day. My recently acquired Hartke LH500 is 350w @ 8ohms and 500w @ 4ohms. The 2x12 cabinet designed for guitar that I'm running through now is probs gonna blow at gig-level volumes. So, I'm upgrading. Most Hartke 4x10 cabs in my price range are rated at 300w. I'm not playing...

    Fender Bassman 400 Head. Si?

    Scale length

I measured from the nut to the bridge (I think that's how you do it, right?) of my Aria TSB-350 and Aria FEB-02 (the acoustic). The TSB-350 measures 32.5" and the FEB-02 measures 34". Favorite Carol Kaye bass line(s)

Okay, this is tough one. Kaye played for so many years in so many genres. If you had to narrow it down to one, or two, or twenty, which were your favorite(s). I admire the hook of Mission Impossible, but I'm struck by the amount of beauty her bass line adds to The Way We Were.

Ironically, here I am, telling it on the mountain. I just finished a gig where the last three songs were Silent Night, The First Noel, and Go Tell It On The Mountain. Simple, right? Go Tell It is just a I IV V pattern with alternating fifths and transition walks. Of course I forget to turn up...

Which bass? Well... why not all of 'em!

While certain epic basses are missing from this mix, certainly Bart Soeters shows what Scott Devine said in a recent video on tone, that it is really in your hands; or in another recent video that even a $100 bass (although there are none in this video) can sound great in the hands of a...
