Stoner/Doom Bassists Thread, Part 90: Maxed Out

it really does. Not that I need another amp at all. I just don't really favor the alphabass so I put it up for sale/trade locally to see what would come up and I have two local oeavey collectors who really are keen for it. Neither had a Vulcan...

Really unless I got something stand out I'll probably flip the trade bait. The vtm just teases me with tubes, but I still have that pignose to fix up and I should be happy with it, the series 400 and the mostly harmless.

I only know of 6 Vulcans internet wide. This thread owns half of them.

In reference to my previous inquiry about Peavey guitar gear: any info or advice on a Peavey Supreme head? I've done a bit of a quick look and it's a toned down version of the XXL or something? Anything will help, and thanks again! Now for cabs...

It's a solid state head based on the transtube technology, basically a very loud bandit.

What's your bass amp, a 400rb? I'd play that pushed with dirt before buying that... Though my first amp was a transtube rage 158 pushed with a fabtone, and I didn't judge it. I played that until I stupidly tore it apart to paint it orange like those "orange colored amps" I'd seen people play on lol.

Anyone know if there's a cheap way to repaint a car?

My friend used krylon, it was cheap, but gross. If he actually tried and followed directions I bet it would be "ok"

I'm not a car dude, but It would really depend on what your plan for the car is and how much of the car you plan to paint.

I think the only big difference is the dip switches. I've always used my keys or a pick to switch them. Though honestly, once I got them set to a tone I wanted, I never really touched them again. The VTM60 is a good amp too, just a little less volume/headroom. Probably still pretty loud though, the VTM 120 is crazy loud for guitar.

I bet if I traded for the vtm 60 I could trade again for a vtm 120... I'm sure someone regrets buying such a loud amp for their Judas Priest cover band and wants the lower wattage one.

Are there any bands heavy or not, that the drummer focuses heavily or exclusively on the toms and bass drum? Tribal big booming stuff, like trying to summon King kong from the jungle.
Neurosis and Sepultura. Also Dragged into Sunlight to some extent. Also my band at times.

Neurosis.
Yep... I think the song "Through Silver in Blood" goes on for about five minutes before the drummer even really hits a cymbal.

So when I first started going to university in 2011 my dormmate was this dude who is now 36ish (I'm 24). it didn't last his GPA was like a .5 literally and he was booted. He drinks like 48 beers a day, has drug induced Tourette's so his head will suddenly twitch in all directions like he's possessed and he has meth mouth...

So since then he's lived at his parents house. I guess last Thursday he got kicked out and he's called me or texted me at all hours for several days looking to stay in my house... I have ignored or dodged the question, until yesterday he asked if I'd chill and I without thinking said ok to shut him up.

I really hope I didn't just give a mouse a cookie, for those young enough to have read the book or old enough to have read it to their kids.
Dude, nooo. This is all bad.

I want to play in Europe. :(

Haha, maybe "need" is too strong of a word. There's just a lot of two-piece stoner/sludge/doom bands around here at the moment. I would love to be able to roll up to a show with a full lineup. We'll see how it shakes out.
It's always funny when we're on bills with power trios.

I've considered that, but I think the chances of finding a keyboard player that's into doom are even slimmer than finding a guitar player.
Form a band with another bassist?

The meatsmoke is kind of a dark sounding head imo. I have to eq quite a bit of mids back in to get mine sounding "flat" to my ears. The 2x15 might sound good with it. Though they are fender tone stacks if i remember correctly.
Yeah, when I learned that, my GAS for one vanished.

It is one of the things that keeps me from ever being interested in a meatsmoke. If they were building a tube amp with a different front end, I would be weighing options.
Same. I can work around the Fender tone stack on my amp because of the graphic. The Meatsmoke doesn't have that, though. For my purposes, the mid control may as well not even be there.

I wonder if they still do custom stuff, though? Still, if I was getting a custom tube amp, it would probably be a Dunwich.

Hello everyone, it's been awhile. I haven't kept up with the thread since they got rid of the TB app. Do most of my internet-ing on mobile devices and it's a PITA to keep up via the mobile site.

Still waiting on the Dictator cabs. Bought some pedals, sold some others. My strings have been super dead and I was too lazy to order new ones and my tone has suffered because of it.

Probably coolest news is that as of next week I'll be working for Reverb.com, so no more boring insurance related job, I get to talk to awesome people about gear all day. Pretty stoked for that.

Got a show in early March, it sold out in 6 days which was pretty awesome, and we're playing with my old band Weekend Nachos which will be pretty fun as we have never done that in Chicago.
What Dictator cabs you getting?

I hope you guys can do a show here eventually. I was a bit disappointed not to see your name on the California Deathfest lineup.

hey this thread still exists! you guys all playing peaveys through duallys yet or what?

ive switched to all 1x8 combo SS amps and axe effects stuff. sounds killer on my danelectro bass. I AM STOKED.
Mountain of 1x8s? Endorsement deal with Phil Jones, then?

I am still playing a Peavey, but not through a Dually.

Man I love steel guitar twang, but dont really dig country. That windhand lady had a real nice song. Steel guitar can be really haunting.
I like some older country. Newer country just sounds like pop/rock with a fake Texas accent to me, though. Most of the time.

Hah! I actually owned an '84 at one point. Great bang for your buck P-Bass.

Back when Ibanez made basses I like. I miss their passive basses and their old body shapes.

Doesn't need to look great. Mainly trying to make it look more derpy/unique. Also just needs to hold up decently. I'll hopefully have the car long enough that its resale value will be almost nothing by the time I get rid of it anyway. It's an old minivan. I want to paint the whole thing, basically. Weird colors.

...And the drummer cancelled on us again.
I'm still hoping it's really an emergency and not one of gazillion of his stupid excuses, but we haven't seen the guy for almost a month now.
There's a saying that everyone has an a$$hole and an excuse. Well, he must be some kind of mutated superhero with a billion of a-holes.

We're starting to search for a replacement. Enough is enough.
Here's hoping he'll come to his senses and we'll be able to practice every week as we used to as we don't really know many musicians. We'd probably had to go on a hiatus and pretty much start from scratch.

Yeah to be honest the scoop doesn't really bother me much because I play in a 3 peice with a guitarist that uses a ton of mid boost. I have plenty of low end to be heard. Im pretty sure that they still do custom. I think I saw a meatsmoke with the skyhammer pre section in it for sale awhile back, I wonder what that sounded like. Despite the handicap of the fender tone stack I still love my meatsmoke.

Well this weekend was killer. In two days we managed to track our side of the 12" we're doing with Ripple. Even just listening to the unmixed tracks I think this stuff blows away anything we did on Filaments. Now for the worst part, waiting months before anyone can listen to it :P Recording with a click for the first time actually went really well. Proud of my drummer for nailing it after 20+ years of never playing to a click. Here are some photos from the weekend.

Managed to get some workbench time yesterday - got all of the front panel controls of the Altec power amp removed, used the face plate as a template to drill new holes on the chassis and re-mounted the controls and faceplate to the front. Also added the 1/4" input jack. All that's left is to wire up some speaker jacks. Trying to decide whether to Speakon or just cheap out and do 1/4". It's only 100W so it's not like I need speakon. I'll take some photos tonight - it's looking pretty decent.

It felt nice to do something that wasn't work or school related for a couple of hours, even if it means that I'm behind on school work now. Oh well, that's what Monday night is for.

Just do the green combo jacks. Covers all basses.

Baritone time… just got it back from Bronson Guitar Works yesterday.

body by Renegade Guitarworks, finished by me
28.5" scale neck by USA Custom Guitars
Ibanez Tight End bridge
Railhammer pickups (Chisel neck, Anvil bridge)
Kalium 17-73 strings

It's niiiiice

I don't know *** i really did on the pickup wiring.. gotta sort that out. the "blend" knob shouldn't result in zero output at the center detent.. oops.

FN Sexy Bari!!! I want to build one with a telecaster body and strat headstock. I am always trying to find dirt pedals with higher gain because I just play at bedroom volumes and standard tuning. I dropped my guitar to C standard this weekend and man my dirt pedals really came alive. Felt kind of duh from listening to this music, hanging on this forum, and never bothering to down tune LOL. Strings felt like noodles so I think I want a baritone scale length instead of just using heavy strings.

Yeah... playing in a band with sometimes three guitarists, I really need to cut through. Though I had a midrange heavy tone even playing in a trio, too, as there I was performing the functions both of bass and rhythm guitar really.
