Are the extra features worth it?

Looks like the 406 has a longer neck and different body wood (mahogany) to the 206 (ash). ESP website shows both having identical looking pickups and preamps, probably the same thing but different casings, like the ESP/Hipshot hardware. IMO, the main differences would be the longer neck and...

    GK OR EDEN ?!

What's the obvious answer? :p I'd definitely fix the 410. I'd only change gear if I'm positive the current ones don't fit for tone and the new ones positively fit the tone. In any case keep the gk head. I know i would since i like those rb heads (except the weight)

    Phase cancellation, what's the skinny?

It won't sound bad until you hear something better ;)

    Mixing Brands

For cab matching it is recommended to get identical cabs to ensure the best results. In theory any two cabs with matching or similar phase can work together just fine. Unfortunately that information is scarce on mass produced cabs. Try the combination by yourself and see if it suits you. Mixing...

    Thoughts on Hartke?

Hartke offerings are fine working horse. Nothing boutique, just plain works. Add on top of that with Larry's personal support, Hartke is a good choice.

combination of "4x10" and "1x15" cabs

Only if you like to watch your amp meltdown. It can only take 4ohms minimum and you HLF already filled that 4ohm. Either play elsewhere or buy a new cab.

Need help with a 410 decision..

Definitely the svt 410he. It's got that classic ampeg tone. Edit: Any cab can make sound even with 1 watt of power.

    Shuttle 6.0 Volume issue

On mine (from 2008) the amp always make crackling noise when adding the master volume. Changing channel volume produce a much less noticeable crackle and only occur sometimes. No problem with the gain.

GK 410 MBE vs SVT410 HLF

That HLF doesn't sound anywhere close to the classic Ampeg tone, imho. The 410-HE does the tone better than the HLF. The HLF's bass extension is great for deep bass but I find it lacking in the mids. I like it solo, not quite in a band situation. At least in my case it got drowned out.

    I need some head suggestions

Get a genz benz neo-x 212. Quite light, portable, and sounds big. Or an SVT 410-HE if you're fine schlepping the weight.

moving to a small apartment -practice amp recommendation

So you still have the minimark, right? Just use that one if it's still working. No sense spending more money when you have a functional small amp around.

One 15 Cab +two 10" cab vrs Four 10 cab

Two 210 would be the ticket. As loud as a 410 (theoretically) and stands higher when stacked vertically than either options. Find and buy one 210 cab you reeeeally like now and add another one later on. Grab one for quiet gigs, grab two for louder ones. FYI: tone is defined by the sum of the...

    Need Advice--ShuttleMAX 12.2 and STL-2-210T x 2

That additional 75 watts going through each cab is negligible. That said, the MAX 12.2 has better expandability, revised EQ and better sounding power section with 3DPM (based on the Shuttle 6.2 video review) compared to the Max 6.0. Haven't heard word about ShuttleMAX 6.2, I probably missed...

new amp day!!! Ashdown Little Bastard

Thread hijack: Do you use different cabs with the upright or the same setup?
  17. S

    Head/Cab compatibility question

Yes. As long as you don't run below the amp's minimum impedance you can mix and match however you like.
  18. S

In search for advice. Ampeg related.

The CL is damn loud. Either way you're gonna burst some eardrums with either one of the three thru an 810. The 4-pro has more features and a different tube front compared to the 7-pro. Get the CL. You won't regret it!

    1x15'' or 2x12'' ?

Another MAG 410 would be the best for consistent and predictable result. Matching non-similar cabs can produce unknown results so be sure to try the combination first before buying. 212 is louder than a single 15, and can keep up with the 410 better.

    Genz Cab Love

My impression was the same. The XB3 has *huge* bottom, the opposite of the tight sounding Uber. It's the go-to cab for massive lows and remain reasonably punchy. Can sound "vintage" with proper dialing in the low-mids, imo. The Uber 212 is arranged diagonally in a compact 410 box. Much heavier...

    amp noobie

Sound like you need a versatile EQ section. Something like a Genz Benz Shuttle/ShuttleMAX 6.0 or a Markbass LMII/III. Either can be had for less than $600 used. For the cab, I suggest go with either 410, 212, or a 215 setup if you're not sure of how loud you're going to need. Possibly an...

    Genz Cab Love

Lol :D I do honestly believe the Shuttle 6.0 and 410-XB3 is a quite versatile combination, in my opinion and unfortunately limited experience (not a lot of cab choices here :() It's downside is 4-ohm only option. Not really a downside, at least in my case, cause if I need more speakers I'm...

    Genz Cab Love

I've tried a Uber 410 and own a less-frequently-talked 410-XB3. I love them both for what they are. Loud and punchy. Uber for tight lows while the XB3 for the massive, wide lows. With the Shuttle 6.0, I can make the XB3 to be warm and thumpy, to tight and punchy. Very versatile, imo.

Ampeg SVT410he: does it lack bottom end?

It lacks the bottom end extension compared to ported cabs. As for the "bassy" volume (low-mids), no.

    American svt-vr

This. I am saving up right now and am gonna buy an SVT-VR because I love the sound! It's not gonna leave my home if I ever bought one and it won't matter cause the tone is worth it :bassist: IMO, YMMV.

AMPEG Portaflex 550 HEAD with PF210 cab

Short answer: Yes, you need another 8-ohm cab, and *then* dime the volume and EQ knobs to get the full power :ninja:

210 cabs with different power ratings

Speaker cones erupt before they hit the advertised power ratings. What matters is the speakers' physical excursion limits - which is a rating no commercial cab manufacturer provides. That's why bill is saying power ratings are moot. Especially if the case the 400watt speakers has the same...

    CABINET ADDITION

+1 on another 210 cab. Stack them vertically and be (subjectively) louder than a regular 410! Lets see, if you absolutely want another mis-matched cab for whatever reason(s): 410 cab is heavy. A 210+410 can be a nice 610 but you'd need a 4-ohm 410 cab and 2.66-ohm capable amp. 212 cab is too...

    Amp on a Budget

They have a unique sound, ime. Punchy-er mids and focused lows, compared to the warm lows and punchy mid-lows on the SVT. IMHO IME, YMMV.

    i need a new cab !!!

Get another *identical* cab. This will ensure you get a consistent sound. Or a new pair of 410 cabs if necessary. If you absolutely have to mix cabs for whatever reasons, get something that is as loud as your current 410. Any other 410 cab or a 212 cab. Avoid smaller cabs to avoid drowning...

    Yes, it is fine.

    210 and 410 vs 212 and 412

12's are heavier than 10's. Not everyone is okay with added weight when 210's are loud enough. Most 212 cabs are as big (and as heavy) as 410 cabs. Mixing different sized speakers (hell, even differently tuned cabs of the same speakers) is an invitation for phase issues. You may not hear it...

    Hartke LH500 and LH1000

+1 I'd also like to add: watch the bass EQ! Sending too much low frequency can quickly push the speakers to it's limits. Too much bass can also muddy your sound, which will instinctively make you turn up the volume, which would then worsen the whole situation.

Ampeg PF500 combined with what cab?

Read reviews, ask the reviewers, ask the owners/users, ask the engineers who build them (you can find such people here on TB), search on youtube. Matching 410/115 cabs is not ideal. Technical reasons exist, but the short answer: dual 410 sounds better than mismatched combinations. Which Ampeg...

Which of these basses would you pick?

Me, 1) ATK - that's some sweet Koa! plus I like aggressive sounding basses. 2) G&L - I have a L2500, non-US, but sounds almost the same. Can be obnoxious if you absolutely hate bright tones. Passive EQ - cut only, no boost, weaker than active EQ. Parallel/series and passive/active/active+bright...

help me find the perfect first combo amp!

Budget combos and heavy metal are not best buddies, AFAIK  Of course this depends on your band mates keeping their volumes in check. Anywho ... Out of the trio, I'd pick the GK. Haven't heard the Kustom. Behringer doesn't sound bad but I prefer the GK. Out of thomann and 250 Euros, I'd...

new and need some amp advice

I'm interested in how you split the signal. Using a crossover or a A/B splitter box? So you want two rigs: one for band practice (loud) and another for quiet solo practice? I second the dual 210 cab idea. Use one for quiet/low volume and stack two vertically for louder uses. Vertical stack...

    Amp on a Budget

I have little knowledge about small vintage all-tube amps. The newer all-tube amps, though, would include the Peavey VB-2 and Traynor YBA-200. The two can be had under $1000 new, even less for used. Might even try the pre/power amp setup using an Ampeg SVP-PRO and a budget power amp like a...

    Svt comparison with Streamliner

All amps have their own "house" flavor tone. This includes Ampeg and Genz Benz. In fact, that's the reason why there are people who love using Ampeg as well as amp emulations that try to imitate that Ampeg tone.
