Sorry I've been away. The newer version has the holes for the strings in the back set closer to where the bridge meets the body, to increase break angle and somewhat fix the wobble issue.
I'm a voter in Washington, and personally I voted against, what was it, I-502? It was a horribly written initiative, Colorado is smoking us (heheh, lolz) with how they're handling the entire thing. Control went to the Liquor Control board, who thought that was a good idea? Still not okay to grow your own, unless you have a medical card. And honestly the medical card is still the best choice in state. It's convoluted, complicated, and being poorly executed as far as I can tell. I really wished we hadn't jumped the gun, we should have waited until a more thoroughly thought out proposition was put into play. Oh well, it's still a step (or maybe stumble) in the right direction.
In other news, anyone ever heard of Hi-Tone amps? They seem to be some really high quality Hiwatt clones, and they have a DR201 that just looks sweet. I looked at the Reeves C225 for a while, but a few things, including not being 30" wide (I think the box looks funny without the additional width past the end of the control panel, nitpicky, I know), only having 2 inputs, and a slightly more bass-oriented EQ (with an apparently fairly noticeable mid-scoop). The Hi-Tone is just a straight up, un-tweaked DR201 design. 30" wide (will sit nicely on top of my Sunn cabs), 4 inputs (2 each for Normal/Brilliant instead of just 2, also no active/passive switch, I never use actives), no DI out (again, I never use a DI, and the lack of one means it's either mic'd or carried with stage volume). There's also the SAP 200, which is apparently based on a prototype possibly intended for Roger Waters if memory serves me correctly and similar to the ones used by Jimmy Page, that has a switchable boost/cut and a slightly different EQ. ANYWHO, just wondering if anyone had heard or witnessed these amps. I can't find much about them on bass forums, but some guitar players seem to love them. Not really thinking of replacing my Sunns anytime soon, but it might be nice down the line to have an amp that isn't vintage to take out instead of lugging the Sunns around to every gig. I have a stereo output bass now, so I'd be particularly interested in the two separate channel volumes. It'd also be a return to a master volume amp, haven't used one of those in a looooong time.
That's a major drawback to ballot initiatives. They're often poorly written, and unlike laws, they can't really be amended, only voted up or down.
Hiwatts are cool, but they don't do the amount overdrive that I want until they're basically full-up. Plus a bit scooped, unless you turn the mids all the way up and everything else all the day down.
If you want an amp that isn't vintage, but still gets a similar sound to the Sunns, why not just have Sundholm or Dunwich make you a new one? With various mods, in the latter case?
I don't mean to bash Colorado, it was awesome when I went as a kid.
I just find my friends funny, when they talk about going there, and have no intention of doing anything but the greenery (not the scenery). If you have a legit reason like health go go go, but my broke friends no doubt would drive all that way so they could smoke in public or something that probably isn't even allowed.
Also, laz you work with dogs. My neighbors chihuahua is annoying as all get out and keeps getting in my yard and just yapping from 3ft away. How do I befriend/scare it into quiet submission or maybe never come back.

As for the chihuahua... chihuahuas are generally ********. Get a spray bottle. Spray him every time he barks at you. Get some treats and give him a treat when he comes up to you without barking.
Eh, if the dog has poor social skills there's not a whole lot you can do when you're not the dog's owner. I'm personally not a very big fan of small dogs, I find them yippie and annoying, as much as I love all animals. Maybe try giving it treats every time you see it outside and it might warm up to you and stop barking so much. Then again, maybe not, cause small dogs don't like to stfu. Peanut butter, cheese, green beans, baby carrots, apple slices, bananas, chicken, watermelon... all these things are human foods that a lot of dogs enjoy.
Yeah. The key is to reward the dog the times he doesn't bark.

Mid-sized dogs are a bit cheaper. The spaying/neutering is a one-time expense. Unless the dog has health issues already, you won't need much beyond annual shots if you take care of the dog and don't let them eat everything they see on the ground.
If you get an adult from the pound, all you're looking at is yearly shots. At most, a couple of hundy a year. good food, about 30 a month.
I'd get a smaller dog, like a maniacal Jack Russell terrier.

I would go for a small to medium sized mutt, though. They're the healthiest. My parents got their dog from the SPCA when he was about a year old, and he's fifteen now. Only in the last year has my mom had to spend any money on medicine, and that's for the doggy's arthritis which only started slowing him down a lot in the last year and a half.
If I was getting a dog, I'd go to the SPCA and get a medium size mutt, a year or two old, already spayed female. I've taken care of other people's dogs, and concluded that bitches are less hassle to walk, as they don't seem to feel the need to piss on everything.

Chocolate is generally pretty bad for dogs. But it's just like poison. If you have a 150 lbs dog and he eats a hershey's kiss, he's not going to even blink. If you have a yorkie eat all your easter candy, then you're going to have problems.
Yep. Just like smaller people tend to get drunk faster, smaller dogs can eat less chocolate without problems. But seriously, don't give dogs chocolate. Unless you like dealing with doggy digestive difficulties.

No. 600/700hz is that "bowwwww" area of midrange. I really like it. Finger/string noise is up at like 3000hz or something like that.
I go to school out east in Connecticut, and it still sits a little uneasy with me how I can't see any mountains in the area. It just feels...wrong. I visted Florida once, and that really freaked me out. It's soooooo flat, there are no high points for me to recognize and navigate off of. I'd recommend checking out the San Juans at some point, cool camping spots (Orcas has a nice park to camp in with a lake and all), lots of good biking judging from how many bicyclists are in my way whenever I'm trying to go somewhere during the summer, and I must admit during the summer, they're a quite pretty place to roam around. A little dreary during the winter, but hey, it's the PNW, where ISN'T it dreary during the winter?
Yeah, I'd imagine 2xDR201s for guitar would be just a little loud. I love my Sunns, but there's just something about the Hiwatt family that I find really appealing. And as I said, I would sort of like having an amp that was made in this century just so I don't have to worry about babying the old amps all the time. From all the pictures I've seen, they have some of the most gloriously laid out internals I've ever laid eyes on. I'm willing to bet they'd also pair rather nicely with some JBL loaded Sunn cabs. Maybe it's time to start squirreling away some excess funds...ugh, GAS, you'll be the death of me and my bank account (but the happiest and loudest death, you can rest assured).
I think if things don't work out down here, I might move to the northwest sometime. It's like Arcata but moreso, in terms of weather, I hear. And to me, that's perfect.
I also can't deal with the lack of mountains back east (meaning, anywhere east of the continental divide). Growing up in the middle of the bay area, I'm used to very short horizons, enclosed by mountains/hills on every side but part of one. Flat land all around is strange to me.

No Mesa stuff? I use a D-180, and when I saw Laudanum, both bassists I've seen them with were using a 400+.
That said, those are all things I'd like, too. I'm not really interested in anything from Orange at this point, but Peavey has the VB-3 and the Classic 400, and all the various iterations of the solid state stuff, Aguilar has some nice stuff, and I wouldn't mind having the Fender Bassman Pro (the rebadged Sunn 300T) or their new Bassman 100 and Superbassman 300.

PSA: I watched "Pacific Rim" the other night, and really quite enjoyed it. As well as "Oblivion" with Tom Cruise, of which I was expecting bad things, but was pleasantly surprised .
Pacific Rim is a damn fun movie. I feel like it was kinda Guillermo Del Toro doing a giant "shag you, Michael Bay, this is how you make a big, cheesy summer action movie with huge robots."

Well, my wife decreed that the bass and amp had to move out of the front room and into the basement. So, I've started to create a man-burrow. Very bare-bones, but functional: one big chair, one big TV (olde skoole cathode ray tube, yo), and my bass stuff. Also hung up the requisite Bernie Kosar poster, and my John Wayne clock.

One of the coolest musical experiences of my life was playing drums for Inna-Gadda-Davida and a selection of Deep Purple tunes with an organist on a HUGE pipe organ in a HUGE church sanctuary where I happened to be working at the time. Massive volume and power, it was incredible.
I like organ in appropriate settings - classic rock, some stoner rock stuff, etc.
That being said I don't really have a use for that organ pedal, but I think it's a damn impressive piece of technology.

I've never shaging understood that. First Hobbit movie was kinda meh. Think it mainly sets the stage for the other two. Second one was freaking awesome. Sure the whole series is a cash grab but who cares. So is any hollywood movie.
Yeah... but LotR it made sense to have three hour movies. It's a long book. The Hobbit is about half as long as Fellowship of the Ring, and therefore about one fifth or one sixth as long as LotR as a whole. There's no reason to make a nine hour series out of it. There's just not enough book for the amount of movie they're trying to make, awesome rabbit-sleigh chase scene notwithstanding.

I've heard recordings of Rickenbackers with Bartolinis in them. Sometimes even juxtaposed with the Rickenbacker pickups. The Ric pickups sound better, in my opinion, at least for that bass.

Ew. Never buy used leather pants from anyone. Unless the person you're buying them from is a chick and you're just being a perv and buying them to sniff them. Because leather is not known for being breathable, and I'm pretty sure you can't put those in the wash. I know, leather can be washed by hand, but how many schmucks who go onstage in leather pants do you think actually bother? All their ass and crotch sweat just stays there, most likely.
Show was good for being on first time back on stage in over 6 months. The sound guy was a little bvtch and made my guitarist turn way down son we couldn't hear him at all. First live run of the Dunwich with preamp. It's awesome it basically gives me full control of what stage volume I want. I got my Lucifuzz from Bear amps, the guy that restored my vulcan. Sounds great. A guy told me I had the best bass tone he's ever heard. Sold some shirts and have plenty left over if any of you are interested. I'll post call pic later.

Our only gig with instruments through the PA, the sound dude mic'd every cab as a matter of course and didn't tell anyone to turn down.

I'll show gut shots later. It has three peavey, two fender and an old RCA power tube set lol not matched at all. Also a cap is all poofy and busting at the seems. I'm afraid to play it now, even though it sounded great (Can I play it?). Also has a few repairs it seems done by a crazy person, they work, but my dad the EE is baffled as hell.
Peavey gear I think sounds great from pre 1980 and after like 1989. All the mark variants and stuff kinda were plain sounding. Trouble is I think most people who trash peavey only consider that era... At it's not bad stuff just underwhelming compared to the old musician and standard heads, the 90's classic amps, this alphabass, Windsor etc.
I'm biased against anything 80's though, it's all cheesy and ugly regardless if it's gear or the music produced in that period
I like the Mark IV I've played through. It isn't my ideal, but I could do lots of cool poopie with it if I was going for a different sound than I am. I liked the parallel channels. If I'd had more time to experiment, could have been really fun messing around with those.
I'd be lying if that 2 ohms didn't excite me. But that would mean I would need two new cabs for a rig or double down and get another dually... So I don't think I'll be utilizing that feature.
Dang I'm excited by 160 tube watts (loudest I've owned tube wise) and refuse to get another cab to run it. So... In beebass terms I'm a eunuch.
My amp is only 180 watts, but still gets pretty damn loud. With a lower wattage tube head, it's all about having an efficient cab. My cab is ludicrously oversized, but it is damn efficient, so my poopie's pretty loud. Even when we were outside, I didn't turn up all the way. It also kinda depends on what kind of sound you're looking for. Lots of sub-lows will use up a smaller tube amp's headroom pretty fast, but upper bass and mids mine, at least, can do all day, at pretty obscene volumes.

Does ska mean something else in those scenes now? My friend shows me a lot of "ska" bands he's played with and to me it's just punk where the guitar player occasionally hits a few muted "chicka chicka" chords. Hell the bass is still just rapid fire down strokes with a pick.
Ska I think of as reggae meets punk with a horn section. Not my thing, but the bass lines are usually pretty cool.

Yeah, you just tilt it in and slide. I don't see why everyone on talkbass thinks these things are some herculean task to move. I actually often prefer moving my Sunn cab, because it has wheels, and my little 1x15 cab that I use sometimes for the folk/rock band does not.

I used to have a Peavey MKIII and 1820 rig (1810 actually, don't know what the change was when they changed the name) and as soon as I started using tube heads the cab turned into a box of farts.
The 1820 is a bit larger than the 1810.
ok so maybe it wasnt the cab being dead then, because when i tested it at lower volumes it sounded fine. the second i gave it any juice it sounded horrendous and farted out everywhere. for all the hype the black widow speakers get i was severely disappointed.
i do wish i had the box back, i bet two legit 18s in that thing would be ****ing killer (despite what winSD says).
Lots of drivers are pretty forgiving on what you put them in. Some aren't.
I don't know anything about current 18" drivers, though, as I've kinda decided that 15"s are, for whatever reason, more my thing.
I've had an influx of emails from drummers today. About 5 so far, hopefully I can get at least one of them to schedule a jam. One was all the way in Oakland, which is too far, though she said she might be willing to meet in between at an hourly place in San Jose, which is about at the limit of where I'd drive for practice. My wife works in San Jose now and her commute can get up to 1.5 hours each way, depending on the time of day. I'm still hearing from people in Santa Cruz though, which is reasonably close and has a good, affordable hourly rehearsal studio.

As for using their body shapes... in the USA you can't sell them. Because unlike Fender and Gibson, they weren't lazy about policing their trademarks and were therefore able to keep them. That said, you can get kinda close sometimes. The Schecter Stargazer/004 is blatantly Rickenbacker-inspired, for example.
So in a move that may surprise or upset people (unless it's Mike, he'll be stoked).
I've decided to sell my Dually in favor of going back to a sealed 10" based cab.
The Dually is an awesome cab, but after a few months of playing with it and the 66, I find myself really missing the feel/sound of a sealed cab (ala my old Berg NV610) and while the Dually sounds great, it doesn't sound like a sealed cab with 10's.
So I'm going to be moving the Dually on, figured I'd let anyone here have a crack at it first.
I'd rather keep it semi-local to the midwest (I can even meet someone half-way or whatever), but I'm not opposed to shipping.
It's Faital loaded, black duratex, and has a wheat/black and tan grill. But if that's not your cup of tea, it's pretty easy to swap out a new grill cloth.
Construction is top notch, and it really does sound great. I've used it at 3 or 4 shows, and a bunch of practices, so it's still pretty much like new condition.
I'll most likely regret this decision once I have to move whatever monstrous cab I replace it with (either another NV610 or a legend loaded 8x10)
